just got my surface book , it's glorious but what's up with the scaling on some the programs. I opened up photoshop and everything was ant sized. Hell even as I'm typing this, I can barely read what I'm typing. Does anyone know how to fix this? otherwise great product cant wait to draw

Older version of PS? They fixed that a couple versions ago. High PPI screens require software vendors to put in a little extra effort.

Surprised you're having an issue in a browser tho, what are you using? It should be fine in Edge/IE/Firefox/Chrome.

There's an OS-level scaling setting, but if you haven't messed with it it should be set correctly.

Just picked up mine from Best Buy last night. Love it! Not only was it the last one they had left, but it was the exact configuration I wanted as well: i7, 16 gig ram, dGPU, 512 gb storage.

This thing is sweet! I was torn between it and the Vaio Z Canvas, but this just feels perfect.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?

Which version of Photoshop? The newest one has scaling options for high res displays.

You can also adjust the global scale in Display Settings.

I'm getting a yellowing around the edges of the screen when the surface book gets warm. It wasn't a big deal, but now the yellowing is starting to stay even when it's cool and it gets worse the warmer it gets. :/

I can't put in a ticket to return it right now as I'm in the middle of a semester, but I'm glad this thing has a year warranty. I've had nothing but problems. Kind of regret purchasing it.

All of these little things add up to a very frustrating user experience.

Had this happen to me as well. I went to the microsoft store and they gave me a new one on the spot. New surface book I have seems to have a harder screen. I have no issues so far.

I saw reports of people going through this online. the issue seems to get worse with time so I would replace it asap. I even saw people have their screens crack from the heat. Do you have warranty from best buy or another place? Best buy i know covers cracks and other stuff.

Were you playing any graphically demanding games? I played starcraft 2 and hearthstone on lowest settings and the yellow spots appeared.

To buy a surface book or not to buy, desperately need a new laptop and its such a sexy piece of kit, can even get £100 off the standard price and buy now pay next year, just worried if i buy now then SB2 gets released in October or something, i see rumours are suggesting the new one wont be out til next year so that'd be fine but if a new one comes out much sooner I'll kick myself for not waiting, what to do what to do

Same here. I can get the 10% student discount but was hoping for some sort of extra special deal in the summer to tempt those getting kitted out before the new term. There are much better deals on at the US store but I don't think there will be thanks to Brexit.

How and where the hell did you get it that cheap???????????

Amazon reseller, basically repackaged, like new condition. Come with everything (no scratches even) and even has a year left on its warranty with MS.

But what I mean is... There are people selling new ones on eBay etc. Did you get it from Curry's PCWorld?

(remember in the UK we can return basically anything for a full refund within 14 days, sometimes 30, so buying like new is perfectly worthwhile)

Every single time I see this thread I cry. Why is it so hard for MS to make this thing available in Brazil? Even Apple sells all of its products here, they are expensive as hell but I can buy them if I have the means. MS is beyond terrible at selling hardware, shit!
Enjoy your Surfaces... ='(

Thats a really good deal, havent actually got any money at the moment so had to buy from very (12 months buy now pay later), i wouldn't want to buy expensive electronics from ebay anyway

What are the chances of running playable quality No Man's Sky on my book?

i7, 16gb 512ssd model.

Absolutely no one has any idea how demanding NMS is going to be on any hardware, because absolutely no one who can say anything publicly has ever played the game on PC.

For reference, I can run Overwatch on global "medium" settings with a couple extra settings moved up one extra level, at 3000x2000 at 50% rendering resolution at 40ish fps. 30ish on an external 4K monitor.

We don't know for sure, however steam lists the following requirements:

  • OS: Windows 7
  • Processor: Intel Core i3
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: nVidia GTX 480
  • Storage: 10 GB available space

The GPU requirements would be my main worry, as a GTX 480 is considerably more potent than the 940m. But you'd have to wait for benches to confirm. You could buy the game on steam, play it for 30 minutes, and if you get unsatisfactory performance or it doesn't run, get a no-questions-asked steam refund.

Anyone come from a MacBook Pro and use the SB as their only machine now? Thoughts on the transition?

If SB2 is a good upgrade I may consider selling my MBP 15" and SB4 Core m3 and go SB2 only.

Absolutely loving my SB, though starting to wish i'd maybe got a pro4 instead as using it as a tablet is just so incredibly handy (pun intended)

So I'm in Canada (which makes these pricey as hell) and am thinking of getting one of these for my last year of school and some light gaming. Which model and build and shit is the best bang for my buck? I know nothing about these or computers in general really.

I got the i5 8gb 256gb gpu model, they start getting stupid money after that

Slightly OT but I play on a SP3 i7 and it holds up pretty okay. No max settings for most things, but if you're not a 4K or the highway type then you should be able to get by with a SB just fine.

I've owned a Surface Pro 3 and 4, and finally a Surface Book.

Love this thing after messing around with it for a day. Played some older games like Bioshock Infinite and Brothers, and it didn't flinch at all at around 900p resolutions.

Was able to get the mid-tier I-5 with dGPU $1,899 model for $1,549 today with its sale price and $150 off Student Discount code. The battery life seems to be amazing as well. I got a solid 11 hours on my first full discharge from 100%, and much of that time was spent installing productivity software and games.

Will see if any software issues kill the experience, but I'm asking myself why I took so long to finally get this!

So it seems like the Surface Book 2 is probably coming 2017 but I'm about to start grad school. Do you think this thing would be good for 4 years or are there any nagging flaws anyone has that people think I should wait or go for another laptop? I'm also wondering for people who haved used it in class the tablet functionality a substantial feature?

No swap-able battery = not good for more than three years.

So my third surfacebook is on its way.

I don't think I want to keep it. I'm sick of this screen thing happening and don't want to deal with it when my warranty is up.

What would be the best way to sell it? I'm thinking of just getting an iPad Pro and a regular laptop.

Got my Surface Book today, and I'm loving it so far. Does anyone know if there's a notebook app (such as OneNote) that converts handwriting to text as you're writing? I think I saw such a thing once in a review, but I can't find it.

OneNote will do it after the fact, but check out the touch keyboard - tap the icon in the lower-right of the touch keyboard and you can bring up a handwriting pane you can use anywhere in the OS.

Decided to buy a dock for mine today. Been using it for school and travel, my Surface Pro 3 for work, and my desktop at home, but I'd like to be down to just two machines so decided to get rid of my Surface Pro 3. With the dGPU unit, how many monitors can I run off this thing? Was thinking four would work but I only need three. Just don't know if anyone else has tried that many attached to it and I can't fiddle with it until tomorrow.

If you’re using Surface Dock with Surface Book, the Mini DisplayPort on your Surface Book is covered by the connector and isn’t available. This is by design, as you can use only three screens at one time (two external monitors and the screen on Surface Book).

So 2 external monitors and the Surface Book screen itself?

(Also make sure if you need DisplayPort->HDMI or DisplayPort->DVI adapters that you get active adapters, you might run into problems with passive adapters.)

For some reason I can't get the Nvidia GPU to turn on now. Whenever I launch a game it just stays on the Intel. I have changed the preferred graphics processor in Nvidia Control Panel, and even tried to right-click 'launch with nvidia gpu'

But it has no issue launching the Nvidia GPU in Illustrator.. urgh...

What to do?

A few weeks ago I had a software update or something and then every time instead of waking up my Surface Book would restart. Then there was another update that seemed to fix this but now my battery life is shit, only lasting about 3 hours and when I close the lid and then then start using my PC again later the battery is significantly lower even though it's been (or should have been) asleep. Is everyone else having the same issues? I thought this was resolved long ago. Anything I can do to fix this?

I think this latest update has introduced some sleep issues again. I have the 16gb ram, nvidia gpu, 512gb version.

I've had my surface book since launch and it feels slightly like similar issues I had to endure back then. My wife slept it a couple nights ago and it was still spitting out warm air like i was trying to play some pc game at full settings. Something was clearly wrong.

Also having issues coming out of sleep and having to restart altogether. Honestly tho as quick as this thing boots up and enables me to start using programs, i stopped using sleep altogether, but that doesn't mean this problem should exist.

---------------

So rumors and pics of a new surface book have me regretting my purchase lol, but I knew this would happen. Thing is, I wouldn't be able to buy now anyway as i'm in the middle of building a house and until we close, it's a no no for any big purchases, so I'd probably be waiting for a 2017 model anyway.

I think the only thing i'm missing is really USB Type C, so waiting for a post Kaby Lake upgrade seems the way to go. I really do love this laptop.

I installed the update last night so I'm not sure if it's changed anything yet to introduce problems, but I know that it did fix all the dock issues I've been battling for the past month. I hadn't used it all summer but going back to this device is so nice. Kinda want to upgrade if the shrink the bezel of the screen, but if not I'm content holding on to mine for another year.

Weird. I'm on my second and I haven't had the yellow screen issues on this one. And I havent had sleep issues either. I'm really happy with my current surface book. I hope you're able to get something you like.

Seems like third time is the charm. This one is working perfectly after the latest update (was getting random apps crashing and/or becoming non-responsive).

I love the laptop, so I didn't want to get rid of it.

any rumors on when this is getting refreshed? I'm really tempted to get one.

if I'm not too big on the whole touch screen tablet thing. Can anyone recommend me a good laptop? No gaming, but it does need to crunch some numbers as I work.
