No church was alowed to made their own programs (that is until fucking salinas de gortari) and all of us were educated under the same books, same teachings and same assignments.

Also, compared with fundamentalist christian sects, the catholic church is WAAAY more progresive in some issues like the ones you mention (evolution and the like)

I think this may be a big reason why conservatives in the US are so backwards. Mexico is Catholic in its vast majority and for all the criticism that they get I have to commend them for not being this ass backwards. I was raised in a very conservative catholic school and we learned about evolution, for crying out loud! Our conservative politicians dont need to cater to christian nutjobs that think the universe was created in 7 days some 5000 years ago.

rural america really hates teachers because they can eventually make more than the average salary and they get benefits. I grew up in an area where the newspaper's editor hated teachers so much, they posted their salaries right next to their names. (legal because it's technically public information). combine that with some twisted worship of "school choice and free market" american education is constantly at risk
