Nintendo Direct September 13th for Switch and 3DS

3DS's lineup over the next few months was fleshed out. Switch had a number of medium-sized announcements that also fleshed out its next few months. 2018 for both systems has a few games announced but is generally still empty. Unless you had a particular interest in any of the games, none of the announcements were really megatons, even if there were certainly surprises. The story coming out of this is probably "Nintendo has a steady stream of releases coming up thanks to first-party efforts, third-party games, and indies."

the 3ds is going to somehow keep trucking with even more new titles (minecraft, mario party: the top 100), and the switch is having the best first year since initial launch for any platform ever (xenoblade confirmed dec 1, doom, la noire being new announcements), and momentum into 2018 with dq builders, wolfenstein ii, kirby: star allies, etc.

Ok so apparently even though we didn't get a trailer for the Zelda DLC2 we have a release date?? 10 November. And we get ugly new helmets

EDIT sorry, the champion AMIIBOS come out Nov 10, not the DLC :(

Clearly they most wanted to highlight software through to the end of the year, and that was done pretty well, but it's a little boring to me. The Bethesda ports were a surprise but I don't know how they'll go down with the audience, i guess we'll see (something we haven't been able to do for a while at least!)

I'm surprised they didn't give any info on the next batch of 1st party games though (other than Kirby). Maybe there'll be another direct around Dec/Jan but if that's the case, to me it's a little late and points to less reliance on their own software and more on 3rd parties for early next year. That's not a bad thing, but is a little disappointing personally, given they'd almost convinced me of their ability to maintain the healthy flow of 1st party games they've had this year.

I don't want them to slip back into their old ways, big games only in the holiday. Plus with a lot of their big names out of the way already, i'd hoped we'd see some lesser-revisited stuff sooner rather than later! Still hoping at least!

Did I miss something big? What happened to cause Xenoblade 2 to develop a hatedom?

Like maybe I could understand the "Xenoblade is boring" crowd from the first one and X, but I don't know what's caused all this hyperbole to crop up about Xenoblade 2.

Looks like I ended up with a bingo (Sonic Forces had new footage in the Direct, so that counts).

Not sure, but the trailer was pretty awful tbh. I love the shit out of anything Xenoblade don´t get me wrong, but this certainly hasn't been handled as well as X´s marketing.

When I wanted to go to sleep last night I remembered the Xenoblade 2 spotlight and drifted straight off.

Absolutely awful way to show off the game, me and my housemate were bored to tears. Seemed to never end.

It's the generic anime art style for most. And, for me in particular, the sexualized Pyra design.

Frankly, the trailers haven't been that interesting. The main character art isn't compelling (though I recently learned that Kunihiko Tanaka worked on one of the Blade designs shown in the recent trailer which looked pretty good) and the writing so far isn't really charismatic.

It's got a lot to prove to people even if I think it's easily going to blow through expectations.

Somehow, it was exactly like I predicted it.

I expect absolutely nothing.
No virtual console, no "good and interesting" announcements. Just the usual "this is coming and this is coming and this is already out for a week but you already know that, oh and here 2 new amiibos as peek of this Direct.

Almost everything in it was about games that we already knew about plus a few new ports.
Hugely disappointed.

But the new informations about Xenoblade were cool.

Oh and Virtual Console is now officially dead.

It's a GAF thing, really. Like it's hard to find a recent Xenoblade thread that never gets derailed by the same complaints (face, clothes, it's not British, anime, etc.)

This is a pretty good summary. 3DS came out surprisingly strong. It seems like there's going to be a bunch of good stuff coming out in 2018. Maybe most of it was already known, but seeing it all in one lineup really impressed me somehow.

My only wish is that they had said SOMETHING about mainline dragon quest XI. DQ XI for 3DS seems really fun to play, with the unique 2D vs 3D optional split. We also still haven't seen any media for the Switch version of XI -- I was hoping for at least the Japanese direct to show us which version it will be most similar to. If the Switch has the 2d vs 3d mode, I can finally relax a bit for the West. If not, I really worry if they'll get it to NA before they close the casket on 3DS.

Maturity, bitches.
No new game announcements (don't @ me - ports of old stuff or pseudo-indies aren't new games ^_^)

I will @ you because we got Style Boutique 3 as a new announcement which is a level beyond megaton and the fact you're clearly ignoring it means you're 1. not fabulous enough and 2. not fabulous enough.

Wondering.. did the Champion Amiibo's ever go up for pre-order? I remember looking every day after they were announced but never found them available.

Good direct. Lot of heavy hitter moments. Mario is simply outstanding. Gonna download the Octopath demo now but good grief is it gorgeous. Xeno segment actually sold me on the game compared to it's initial reveal. Kirby looked great too. 3DS still kicking but it's telling when it only took up 10 minutes. I'm sure January/February will bring the big guns for 2018.

And Bethesda with the support was dope!!!

It was a really good direct with a lot of news; a lot more than I was expecting. Doom and Wolfenstein 2 ports were a surprise and liking the support Bethesda is giving to the Switch. Despite no Fallout 4 announcement I wouldn't be surprised if we get it eventually.

New Style Boutique 3 was also a surprise. Those games are actually pretty good and I like Syn Sophia's output (particularly PriPara) so yeah good to see they are still working on this.

Lots of cool RPGs on the way too, and 3DS still getting some love in that area. Most of my time is on Switch now but 3DS is still hanging on surprisingly well.

Lots of cool games that I want. My wallet is pretty much crying.

They only needed a single announcement to make this exciting and missed the mark. Disappointed but I guess things are a bit later than we thought.

So many great games. Mario Odyssey is shaping up to be the game of the forever imho. And here I am, yearning for Resi Revelations.

Nothing too shocking (I was hoping for Stardew Valley release date), but I'm really excited for that Golf RPG and Steamworld Dig 2 coming out very soon.

I think I'm more excited for Mario Odyssey than I have been for any Mario game since Sunshine. And while that was a bit of a disappointment (that I still enjoyed a lot), Odyssey is looking like it'll knock it out of the park.

We're getting arcade releases, at least it's not nothing!

Cant wait to buy the arcade Mario game that was included in every Mario Advance game (which I still own). :/

Anyone notice they didnt show any shooting for the kiddies in the DOOM footage?

Idk why but I was surprised they said Nazi on the direct

It was a Direct able.to cement a great first year for Switch, quality and quantity support from Nintendo, unexpected western third party support even if sill sparse, good indie support (especially counting also the Nindie showcase), a great commitment from SE

But also underlines a great and even worst than expected lack of faith in the system from Japan

eh, the big-huge stuff isn't coming, but japan is definitely on board. sega, square-enix, and koei tecmo all have multiple projects on the way. plus, next week is tgs. i imagine we'll see smaller-level announcements there in the form of multiplatform games.

Yeah sure, you're right. At least something, but it's still sad to see that this announcement basically exclude that virtual console is coming anytime soon.

I would have been happy with any one of the following:

1) A release date for Stardew Valley.

2) Another "Deluxe/DX" Wii U re-release reveal.

3) A proper Virtual Console service reveal, with N64 or Gamecube games.

That's it. Any one of those things. It's not like my standards are unrealistically high and I'm expecting megatons.

That Direct was abysmal, and I'm quite concerned that after Mario Odyssee, there's nothing in the near future that I'm interested in on Switch. Pokemon and Metroid are the only two future games I especially care about, and they're still a long way off.

Why do you want a release date for Stardew Valley, if you're not interested in it?

I said I'm not interested in anything after Mario Oddysee. I'm hoping SV will be out before then, as it's in the certification process now. I guess it's possible it may not be, but that doesn't change any of my actual points.

That's because there is almost literally nothing announced for the near future. If it's a good strategy is up to debate, but Nintendo wants to focus the messaging on the games, which will be release soon. It's in opposite to Sony, which announce titles very far in advance. Hell, its in opposite to many companies, who want to build up hype (see Marvel, Star Wars, etc.).

It isn't new, they do this the last years ... but we are all still (negative) surprised by it

They didn't announce Mario Odyssey 2, Metroid Prime 5 or a revision of the Switch hardware.
There was a game that I didn't like and they talked about it.
There was no mention of this game that I really like but had no previous indication of coming to a Nintendo console.
There are only two new pokémon in the new versions of the latest Pokémon, even though there had never been new pokémon in a "third version" of a Pokémon game.
Minecraft on N3DS is not cross-play with PS4.
This Direct was held at a very late hour in Europe.
There was too much red.

Hugely disappointed. -52/100. Literally unplayable.

Ya know, this really felt like the light (and just right) amount of icing on a delicious cake. We knew about most of the stuff here. Xenoblade looks beautiful and in-depth (I still need to play XC1 and finish XCX). Mario looks fucking amazing. Skyrim looks like a solid port, and I'm really happy DOOM is coming out this year. I have been really missing a solid FPS on Switch and this will fill that void perfectly.

Overall, a good direct. Nothing crazy surprising, but it confirmed that this will be one of Nintendo's best years in a while. I'm still surprised Mario Odyssey and Samus Returns are gonna be released only 6-7 months after Breath of the Wild came out (which I still haven't finished lol). It's crazy, I hope they can keep this momentum going. Who knows... Maybe 2018 will be even better?

Nothing much new shown in that direct, but i enjoyed it nevertheless. A nice round up of loose ends for the year really and release dates. But it cements what has been a great year for the switch. Got a lot to look forward too.

Doom announcement actually made me go holy shit. It's a fucking amazing game. Really intrigued to see how it runs. And Wolfenstein. I want that game for the ps4, the reveal trailer was awesome, but with mario, and xenobloade coming out later in the year thats my gaming calendar booked up for the year, so again really intrigued to see how that runs too.

I didn't think that they would be able to beat the last Odyssey trailer but they did. Game looks sublime.

Only disappointing thing was lack of VC i am kind of desperate for it now haha. Even though i have other devices :|

I want to be excited for the future of a console I own. A direct that's all ports and stuff I knew was coming for the past year is the exact opposite of exciting. Why would I want the immediate future to be laid out...again. I'm not a fruit fly, I'm somehow still aware that Mario Odyssey is coming out next fucking month and Xenoblade 2 is right around the corner.

FWIW, at least NoE was very clear that it was the immediate future that would be laid out during this Direct.
