Actually, when Netflix launched, it basically was just cable- you could watch all your favorite shows from all networks, just for less money.

Now, Netflix is loosing all of it's deals with other companies (Disney being the biggest one), and primarily adds new things by creating new shows it owns. So, Netlix is now just a channel. Also, every company- CBS, Disney, ect- is making a channel and wants you to pay $10/month to access their channel.
Now we all left cable to just subscribe to online cable

Executive: Isn't that one of the reasons why people left cable
Executive 2: nah it's okay we need more money
Nah, that's not the logic going on here.

Everybody knows this situation isn't going to last, and everything will converge back into a few services again. But nobody knows what services are actually going to survive.

So everybody's trying to strike it big by launching a service now, when the market's new, and hoping that it gets popular enough to survive and make it big once everything consolidates back down. Plus, even if you don't survive, maybe you could make some money for now.

In other words, it's a new market taking form. It's happened before, and it'll happen again.

Kind of sucks in the mean time though.

I think of these independent services, Disney is definitely the one that will be able to stand strong solo because their catalog is that massive.

People hate Cable because "I don't watch sports, I just watch House Hunters, why do I have to pay $100 for all these channels I don't want?" The way cable works is that each subscriber pays a tiny amount for each channel- 3 cents for Hallmark Channel, 20 cents for Animal Planet, 75 cents for Bravo, $1 for USA, $9 for ESPN, ect. You end up paying like 90% of your cable bill for channels you don't watch.

Enter streaming services! Now, you can just pay for the channels you actually want!

The problem is that the cheap rates cable companies pay for each network are built around the idea that every subscriber pays. It's like if you buy a can of Coke from a vending machine it's $1, but if I buy a 24-pack, each can ends up costing like 30 cents.

So now, we have all these services, each charging $10 a month, and when you add up the ones you want, it's almost as expensive as cable was!

The solutions are going to be bundles of these services for a fixed price- basically, just cable again. If you want HBO and Starz and ESPN and Amazon, you are also going to be paying for See-So, Sprout Jr, Vevo and god knows what else

they need to do it so you can choose from a checklist of things you want to watch instead of making those lists themselves, i'm pretty sure that would be the best solution if they don't massively overcharge for certain channels

Yeah, it does.

And yeah, we'll probably get a few main services (Netflix, Hulu, others?), and a handful of independent ones like Disney and Crunchyroll. Or maybe something else entirely, who knows.

edit: I doubt it's going to end up exactly like cable, though. It might, but it'll probably be something else.

The problem with "main" services like Hulu is what happens in a year when Viacom decides it can launch it's own service and pulls everything from Netflix/Hulu/Amazon? Or NBC decides to pull a CBS and launch it's own streaming service? And when they decide to pull their stuff from Hulu/Netflix?

It's going to be getting a lot worse over the next few years.

The issue isn't whether they can, but whether it makes money to do so. The current market makes it profitable to launch a new service, but that's only because it's a new thing and people are okay with paying for them. Once things calm down and people start refusing to pay for new subscriptions (which is already starting to happen), companies will just tie themselves to whatever service offers them the best deal. In other words, it'll work the same way it used to.

I could be wrong, yeah, but that's what I'd bet on.

You know what screw it I'll start my own steaming service with blackjack and hookers....you know what forget the streaming service eh forget the whole thing

But yeah, on a similar subject since it got mentioned, I think a Toonami streaming service would be hard to launch. Both Netflix and Hulu tends to yank up a lot of the Aniplex dubs. And I'd imagine Funimation and Sentai Filmworks would be less willing to share their content with a competing streaming service.

I remember Jetstream. It was the only way to watch MAR and Prince of Tennis in correct order because somehow the network fucked up the broadcast order and were hopping all over the place. :p

I remember trying to read the MAR manga in high school & then a teacher told me to stop because "it was too violent"...for a high school student...

..............I'm pretty sure we were learning about more violent things in classes. I don't think I even made it past the first chapter.

I'm an OG, just...well fuck paying for cable. I've seen...most of the stuff Toonami has aired and have the good stuff on DVD or blu ray. How many actually own Black Lagoon on blu ray in here?

I turned this question bold for emphasis because I can answer with a "Yes! I own Black Lagoon on Blu-Ray! Not Blood Trail though (too expensive to me)."

Dozens-of-us.gif :p

I can mainly say I have it, because I got it for a good price (about $23-25 if I remember correct). I also got stuff like Lain and Steins;Gate for about $20-25 each. I usually don't buy anime unless they are a series I know I will re-watch quite a bit and the max I usually go for a series with two season or so is $30-40.

I was a stupid junior high student who decided to bring Love Hina into some of my classes, which my math teacher caught.

......thankfully, at the end of class, he just said "just don't bring it to class again, okay?" because holy hell, I was sweating through the entire class period thinking I was in super trouble.

make a cheap niche service where you provide streams of, idk, subtitled Polish tv dramas

I own all of it plus Roberta's Blood Trail. Roberta was not fucking around in that.

TV animation is stupid expensive to buy. Whenever I get anime it's usually movies, cause they're way cheaper.

I want Black Lagoon eventally though. I like to collect blu rays, and it's definetly on my list.

Yeah, $23 for it when it's five episodes when I can get seasons or complete series of some shows for around the same price, maybe slightly more, is why I don't have it.

Same reason for FLCL.

I can definitely see that. Movies are usually cheaper than TV series in general, animated or not.

Was worth it to me. Was nice to actually watch it dubbed in good quality. I had followed it when it was originally coming out and had shitty fansubs. I hated the ending though.

I'll be less afraid of teachers because I will just get a scolding than my classmates finding out

Everyone should wash the stank of Death note with American Vandal and GLOW in Netflix

Also taking a life is easier than I thought

It'll probably have awful CGI for their tentacle power things.

How much of the series is it suppose to cover?

I was listening to this album yesterday when I came to a stunning yet depressing realization: How the hell has someone not made a steampunk War Of The Worlds anime?!

I hate that Yu Yu Hakushu on Netflix isn't in HD. Isn't there a BD version of it?

That's pretty bad (SD on any streaming service looks awful). Funi's BD's been out for years, so I have no idea why Netflix is doing that.

I believe the entire series was available for free HD streaming on Funi's service too, but I don't know if that's still the case.

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
Slowly realizing I don't really watch Toonami anymore, and basically just watch DB Super and catch HxH on the Adult Swim site.

This current lineup is not exciting to me.

I actually love the line up TG aside. JoJo is always fun, Lupin is better than I hoped for but probably the least popular liked show here,TG between JoJo and HxH was a huge mistake. HxH is obviously super popular.

I feel bad for not being here more often as of late.

Super is decent
Kai is background noise
JoJo is good, will eventually be really good, then eventually
GURETO DAZE
TG gets muted
HxH is great
Lupin isn't my thing
Naruto...lol
Outlaw Star is great
Reruns are whatever

A good lineup overall. Here's hoping for something good for TG's replacement soon. How much more Lupin is there?

Lupin is suppose to end right near the end of Dec, assuming it doesn't get pushed back. I can see them doubling up for the finale just so it can be finished before the year ends & start the replacement at the beginning of 2018.

Next week is the halfway point being episode 13 of 26.

I just did the math and accounting for Holiday marathons in October, November, and December, there's still going to be three episodes of Lupin left.
