Assuming the COD crowd wants to play on a handheld as opposed to on their couch in front of a big screen.

Honestly, I don't know. We'll have to wait and see.

COD really is the Vitas "PSP-GTA" isnt it. This is some straight up Cylon all this has happened before all along the watchtower type-a-shit.

Even assuming that CoD is a high-quality effort designed specifically for Vita, which remains to be seen, I can't imagine it doing LCS numbers; GTA was an exclusively single-player franchise at the time, whereas CoD is driven largely by online multiplayer, which is inherently compromised on a handheld (voice chat requires speaking into a headset in public, need to stay physically tethered to a WiFi signal).

Why are we so confident that COD will save the Vita?

Back when we thought that 3G could be used for multiplayer I thought COD would be the killer app. Kids playing COD anywhere, anytime.

The focus of COD is multiplayer, which requires the Vita to be connected to wifi. That can be pretty limiting. You won't being playing COD on the bus. You'll probably be playing it at home, which at that point why not fire up the superior version for the console you already own? Well, there is always gaming on the toilet I suppose.

The Taco Bell promotion comes full circle.

There should be more tampons in gaming
Give the Vita some time and I'm sure it'll change many of the minds on the forums predicting its demise. Just give it Monster Hunter, Gran Turismo, Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil and Call of Duty and I'm sure it will change everyones tune. I guarantee it!

I don't think CoD will sell well on Vita considering majority bought it for multiplayer and Vita 3g can't do jack shit.

Cod on a handheld is hardly some bizarre new thing. These games are not system sellers.

The CoD will save Vita talk is the most hilarious thing about the Vita.

CoD is a juggernaut because of the MP. Nobody is going to want to play CoD MP on a handheld. Nobody.

I don't really see how this is an issue since Vita has Bluetooth. I'm sure most people will use the same headset they use with their phone.

People still use bluetooth headset's with their phones in public?

I don't think there is anything wrong with it, just haven't really seen much of it.

COD could be great for Vita. Multiplayer could be great for Vita. I think Vita games have to be like console games, not the watered down version, then it could be really appealing to a lot of people..

Is this the time, when people once again are hoping for handhelds to become cool gadgets like it's 1990.

It's not gonna happen. People are not going to hang out public with their Vita's and 3DS's and play CoD, while chatting (raging) to their bluetooth headset :b

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?

I *completely* disagree, assuming the game is done right.

A complete port of the next CoD, that plays online with your console friends, with the same maps, same (basic) controls, same graphics, and the ability to use your same profile name. That would be huge.

EDIT: And I dunno why everyone is making it some big deal that you have to talk in public... I can't remember the last time more than one person was talking in a headset on the PS3 version of CoD. And that seems to be doing okay.

Unless you live in some universe where wi-fi exists everywhere then the online is never going to matter. Vita's MP capabilities are incredibly handicapped by that. So chances are that if the dudebros are somewhere that wi-fi is then they can just play on a console.

Unless you think people are going to meet up at Starbucks to play CoD.

Sure the saving the Vita is a stretch, but then you look at how well Gameloft's CoD clones sold on smartphones and that there are some thousands of people who play them online despite absolutely godawful controls, at least a decent number of people will buy handheld CoD games. But they will buy handheld CoD games because they have the handheld and the game is on the system, and probably not so much that they will buy the handheld because CoD is on it. It's basically on every platform anyway.

I'm still at a loss to understand why this thing is getting released.

Somebody at Sony must have a scenario in mind under which its a big success at a profitable price and makes money for them. It's just hard to imagine what that would be.

Obviously CoD will sell on the Vita, but nobody is buying the system for it. Which people on NeoGAF keep acting like will happen for some bizarre reason.

Sony has the cut the Vita shipment in France by 50% according to this report:
http://www.playportable-live.com/news-psvita-40-000-ps-vita-pour-le-lancement-franecais-40179.html

They won't ship 80.000 units for launch but 40.000 units instead. 75% will be the WiFi model, 25% the 3G model. So my fuzzy math says 30k WiFi, 10k 3G.

Doesn't seem that surprising to me because my retailer buddies told me that those European pre-order boxes with free ear buds weren't selling out by a long shot.

Report ? Really ? .

And people would buy a $250 handheld to play this why?

Let's face the facts here, the vast majority of the CoD audience will A) only buy one version of the game and B) only play online within the the comfort of their own home. Why the hell would they not just get the PS3 and 360 versions instead for a superior experience at a much better price? Also worth pointing out that the 360 version sells far more then the PS3 version, so that greatly reduces the cross-platform benefit too (people want to play with their friends not just strangers).

Now I'm not saying CoDVita won't sell enough to be profitable. Just like the Wii and DS versions, it'll sell by simply riding on the annual hype of the PS360 versions. I just wouldn't expect it to move any hardware. The game will sell purely existing platform owners or people buying the system for other games.

Bwahaha. I didn't want to report about this since I found it odd I couldn't find the actual source link in the article, and didn't trust a site of that stature to get such a scoop.

What the hell does "cutting shipments" even mean? How can you cut shipments? You either reallocate shipments, or don't produce as many Vitas in the first place.

If they are reallocating shipments there's nothing to talk about, if they are not making as many there is something to talk about but that wouldn't be "cutting shipments" more "reducing manufacturing".

This is bumming me out because I really want to play the new Lumines (is it even good?), but I'm seriously starting to feel like having a Vita at this point is going to look lame as hell. Not saying it's going to be a bomb or whatever but in terms of walking around with it it's giving me the same feeling I would have had from carrying around an NGage or something back in the day in terms of public perception.

But I still want the new Lumines....

Don't worry, given it's Ubisoft, and lacks the "Only on PlayStation" tag it'll probably be on your favourite smart phone by this time next year. I'll just save you $249+$20+$39 (Ubisoft is indeed seemingly charging $40 for Lumines in 2012) with that.

Dude, you've got to take one for the team here. I count on your unbiased objectivity in these matters, and I'm probably not alone. I guess you could go across town or take a different route for your commute when you bring Vita with you--never a good idea to shit where you eat.

The worst part is this version has friend leaderboards -- which were on XBLA version but not PSN. Starting to think that wasn't such an "accident" after all....

Well, at least this is almost certainly the last iteration of embarrassing dedicated portable hardware that we'll be forced to endure.

Comparing any previous CoD on a handheld is completely obtuse. Those are games with the name CoD, they are not the CoD games that sell twenty million units a year.

You people amaze me.

Carrying the best looking, brandnew, most "stylish", most powerful handheld in public.... and you are concerned about the "public perception?

Wow, ....really?

Cod on a handheld is hardly some bizarre new thing. These games are not system sellers.

Do either of these games have the same multiplayer maps, controls and gameplay as the multi-million seller versions of COD (360/PS3)?

For a game that sells 20 million every year there's at least 3-5 million people addicted enough to it that they will want to have a version they can carry everwhere with them.

WHY ON EARTH WOULD SOMEONE WASTE $250.00 + other financial expenditures to play COD on their Handheld...

WAT!?!

The PS3 is @ $250.00, add in MW3 which is going on sales rollercoaster from $34.99-$59.99 you would come out better than the Vita

Same with 360, and that would be even cheaper if you go for the 4GB Arcade Model

!

COD is not a handheld oriented game, I'm sorry

Only way this would matter is somehow Sony got all the carriers to give them their 3G/4G/LTE for a small fee or hell free
Do you really think someone on a bus with 3G on AT&T is gonna get good ping and get to play a decent match, you do realize why a lot of people hate AT&T and their drop calls/slow ass speeds meme that always shows up

So your telling me, I should wait till Vita gets that killer app COD on handheld, then play near a wifi spot (which in NYC is non-existent unless you burrow yourself into a Starbucks, or pay for the privilege), or stay at home and play it on my wifi connection... which defeats the purpose of being a handheld to a point

Vita is not doomed.

People saying this are just as crazy as those who wrote off the DS, PSP, 3DS, PS3 etc.

Time will make the reactions in this thread look stupid in retrospect.
Nobody is actually being serious in this thre...

3DS needed 2 weeks to sell 500K in Japan.
Vita sells 500K in Japan in 3 weeks while facing Mario+Mario Kart+Monster Hunter 3DS recent releases and it's doomed.

Sony drops 40K from a shipment and it's doomed.

Lol at the drama queens.

Pal land is Sony land, remember that is their main market. 40K less means is nothing here, maybe they moved them to other country like Spain where they sell PlayStations like hot pankakes even if they are 599€.

The European launch game list doesn't include a mega game seller, but it's maybe the best launch games line up ever seen here. A lot of really promising games compared to other launch line ups. It will have a great launch in Europe.

I bet that it will have better numbers in the European release than PSP and 3DS.
Oh.

Also Call of Duty lol. I doubt that the French market is going to make or break Vita's success either way, so this is probably non-news.

Disagree.

I wouldn't buy a Vita just for CoD, but if I owned a Vita and Activision released a good port of the next CoD game for the Vita, with cross platform multiplayer, id probably buy the Vita version instead of the console version. I rarely play my handhelds away from home anyway (so a constant WiFi connection assured) and I find it much easier to find the time to play handheld games than consoles or my PC. I also think CoD's particular brand of short, sharp multiplayer would be a pretty good fit for handheld play.

Those are my reasons anyway. CoD isn't going to be a system seller for the Vita but i don't think its accurate to disregard it entirely.

Why do some people feel the need to constantly shit on something just because it doesn't fit their view of the world? Why not wait and see how it pans out?

Don't want a Vita? Don't buy it. It's that simple. Nobody is forcing one down your throat. Don't try to poison everybody's perception just because you don't like it or don't care for it.

I don't like the 3DS (no analog sticks, PSP level gfx and very few games that interest me). Yet I don't shit on it because other people like it and enjoy it. Different strokes and all. It fits their wants and needs and that's fine.

I'm going to buy a Vita day one. It fits my needs and wants of what a handheld should be. I rarely play outside, but it will allow me to have the game experiences I want when I'm off on business trips, or when others are using the big TV (hint: every night) and I don't feel like being alone in my home office to play.

Sure, it might not set the world on fire, but I don't care. All I want is for it to be successful enough to have great games of all kinds. Some people seem offended just by the possibility of this happening, the way they so insistently spew their venom.

I said it was my opinion, judging from what I've seen and played. With the exception of 3D, I don't see anything more impressive on a gfx level than what a PSP can do. I didn't claim it was a fact. You don't agree. Fine.

EDIT: And if you're wondering, I don't care about 3D. I prefer higher res, better textures, shaders, whatever gives more detail and quality to a scene.
