Was hyped (love Strider) till I saw it was being made by Double Helix. Trailer looks good I guess, but I'm not hyped yet.

I really dont get what criteria people are using to brush off Silent Hill and Front Mission Evolved as low budget licensed games that dont apply to this?

Gameplay looks good, needs some visual polish. That trailer I didn't like though. Like they tried to mimic a marvel summer blockbuster or something with all the visual effects and what not. Looking forward to it, I hope it's better than CannonDancer.

I LOVE CannonDancer/Osman, waay more than the Strider series.

Part of me wishes this was a full fledged 3D action-adventure game.

But then I guess we don't need another '09 Bionic Commando.

Watched the gameplay, and honestly, I'm surprised. I didn't think it was possible to make Strider look boring to play. The levels just seem so wide and so open, there's no reaction to anything Strider does, all the enemy attacks do no damage to him...

They shouldn't have gone Metroidvania for this game. Strider and Strider 2 had really tight level design and a somewhat unique art style...this just feels utterly generic.

It's PSN/XBLA, right? This can't possibly be a full retail title.

Front Mission Evolved's problems where design wise not technically. Visuals where kinda lack luster as well, but the strider gameplay vids show good visuals.

I love the idea of a Metroidvania Strider! Though, I suppose the original NES one was sort of like that, but the levels weren't all interconnected like a Metroidvania game. This has Day 1 purchase all over it. And wow, Double Helix has been busy! Looks like they have a lot of hidden talent over there as Killer Instinct and Strider both look fantastic.

Really hope this is an early level and it has more varied enemies/locations and they aren't showing it. Because going from room to room and killing generic soldiers isn't that exciting.

Aye. Simplistic level designs, nothing essentially a threat even if you mash your way through recklessly. On top of that, you can regenerate your hp easily.

What's the point? It's like the modern version of press x to win game.

It's a fucking demo where the health was set to not die mode.

it never gets lower than 40. He should have died to the boss.

Exactly. This is what I was trying to point out. Rocksteady's first game wasn't good. They figured it out with the Batman games. Double Helix has made a decent amount of games at this point and they are all mediocre to terrible. I hope this turns out to be a great game but with Double Helix at the helm people have the right to be skeptical.

Rocksteady's Urban Chaos game wasn't a bad game either it was actually decent and got decent reviews. Double Helix on the other hand has release nothing but crap to mediocre games. Rocksteady is simply a better talented studio.

So, the business of development and the art of development are two different jobs that often do not jive. Double Helix Games so far has been a company that seems to have taken the jobs for the money rather than the prestige, and its rep has suffered for it; sadly, the games that should have been AAA-efforts at Double Helix (Silent Hill Homecoming, Front Mission Evolved) have not been the quality efforts that would show this team capable.

But it's a funny business, and talent can be found even in the credits list of shitty games. Double Helix was formerly The Collective and Shiny Entertainment (although the manpower has of course changed a ton since the 2007 merger,) and the Foundation 9 / Backbone studios did have good workers there even though they often couldn't prove it on the insane delivery schedules its management booked jobs with. Holding something like GI Joe: Rise of Cobra or Green Lantern or Battleship against the team may not be a fair assessment of talent (though it is a fair assessment of mindset and approach to product value) because those games were made to meet a franchise need rather than be special in any way.

We don't know yet what Double Helix in this day and age (and we're half a decade away from the last time this team was really trusted in Silent Hill Homecoming, which was The Collective rather than the combined team) is capable of on a well-financed, well-scheduled, well-intentioned game. Hopefully, this Strider is that game (and the KI project) that proves them capable. Teams do resurrect themselves after lean or bad years, and there are lots of cases where a studio label you thought was poison actually gets stuck on a good game. And particularly now when we're in an era of platform change, particularly when the scope and pricing of games can be rethought (I see old-school design being re-evaluated almost as much as when the XBLA revolution ignited,) this is a time when development teams can re-dedicate themselves to finding an appropriate niche and defining themselves. I can't point to any other game by GRIN that I would have bought, but when Capcom teamed up with that team for Bionic Commando Rearmed, they somehow produced magic. This could be that again. Or, not...
Thanks for the response! I appreciate you taking the time to type all this out. I think I now better understand the apprehension people have towards Double Helix. You seem like you've been following their work for a while now.

I hope this game ends up being one of Capcom's successful retro revivals.

Yeah. I should have said not great because it is a pretty decent game just not as good as their Batman games. It certainly shits all over Double Helix's output to this point.

Gameplay looks like ass, art is bland and boring, too many particle effects (KI suffers from this too), rooms/levels have boring design, combat looks repetitive with brain dead grunt killing and no visible effects on Strider being hurt as he runs through everything.

Hope the game is good and Im proven wrong but I'm not holding my breath for this.

If its as good as shadow complex I will be very happy, all I see in the trailer is particle effects galore. I get lost in all the sword swipe effects.

After watching that 7min gameplay vid, I dunno what to think, not feeling anything.

All I know for a fact is they should have taken the music from the NEC 'arcade' port.

Seems like strider is about to go through the same KI response. DH? wtf? terrible right? oh wait it looks awesome - let's stop complaining about devs until we see the game. I thought that lesson was learned already

lets be a bit more positive, yes DH is doing the game, they have done games even lower than subpar and KI isnt looking too hot for me personally, but the original developers of Strider 1 and 2 are the main designers of the game, theres still hope
