Guerilla: Killzone: Shadow Fall's multiplayer is 60 FPS, singleplayer is 30 FPS

I think the distinction between SP and MP is a bit weird.

I would prefer an unlocked framerate for SP. I don't mind playing games which hover at around 40FPS. Beats 30 anyday.

For me this is a great compromise. I love GG's effects work and they can't do that at 60fps (yet). The SP will likely also be slower paced since they're doing more stealth and open environments. Getting the scale and effects to really show off what the PS4 can do and then making MP as playable as possible is a good move.

I also noticed that the post processing and effects in the MP media is the same at the E3 build of SP which is running and less then half the frame rate. This game is going to be a stunner in both MP and SP. SP for the effects, MP for the fidelity at 60.

did killzone 3 have dedicated servers? I remember people (at another forum) argued me down saying it didn't. But it for sure felt like a dedicated server. Never had to worry about host transistions or anything fishy like that.

you never had the intense custom maps like KZ2 and limited game modes

The way he says 'multiplayer' makes me wonder if we'll get a beautiful 30fps single player campaign but then the multiplayer is 60fps but with less graphics porn (It looks so good though, I don't mind).

So who is responsible for such a trailer fuck up? How can people that are in video business to do not see such fps drops, which hurt quality of footage, is beyond me.
Trailers virtually never run above 30fps to begin with, and I've seen BF4 promo footage go sub 30 this year, so it's not like some isolated incident.

That said - maybe this lends some credence to the 60fps trailer they released at E3 then? I did feel IQ was less than great there - but if framerate holds I wouldn't mind.

Call of Duty. Killzone. Battlefield. Halo. Titanfall. Heck, fucking Wolfenstein.

We might be heading into the golden age of 60fps shooters. No turning back now.

And, when these consoles get Rift support, we won't be looking at sub-30fps performance.

I'm stoked.
I'm not a diehard for 60fps, but shit yeah that would be nice!

I don't get this "we're targeting" line. Isn't this a technical design decision that should have been committed to along time ago?
Why are the two concepts incompatible in your mind? They could have made the decision to go 60 back in technical design, but that doesn't guarantee that they achieve it. So they continue to target that goal until it's achieved.

KZ3's multiplayer is fucked up in all ways imaginable

Nice to have confirmation. I hope they manage to achieve it. FPS is more important in a competitive environment then it is in a SP experience.

Well that pretty much destroys all hope for splitscreen now.

Edit: Yup, tweeted that there is no splitscreen which is sad news. Yet another FPS that misses the relevance of the feature. Honestly believe it's one of the main things that keep the Call Of Duty popularity and sales up time and time again. It's not just the same players sticking around. New players keep getting introduced to it. People are more willing to give the game a chance in splitscreen than go and play it specifically by themselves.

Eh, not thrilled about this. Would've preferred a more uniform approach because this seems kind of sloppy. Switching between SP and MP is going to literally feel like a different game and I don't like that.

Either go full 60 FPS or don't do it at all IMO. Seems like something they've changed at the last minute to better compete with CoD and BF4.

I wonder if any of the big MS games will be 60FPS in MP too. Halo at 60FPS would be amazing.

343i said a couple of months ago (maybe around E3?) that Halo 5 would be 60fps, and I think they're using the same engine as Halo 4.

Oh baby gurl. (Can we have 3D support at 30fps since you can hit 60?)

I don't think any more Sony studios are bothering with 3D, are they?! Seems like a fad which wasn't especially successful and they've all but abandoned it.

TVs run at 60Hz, so with a 30FPS game they show one unique frame for every two TV refreshes, and with a 60FPS it's one for one. At 45FPS it'd have to show one one frame twice, then the next frame once, and so on, and that makes for an ugly, jittery look that's actually less pleasant than 30FPS. You get similar problems watching 24FPS movies on 60Hz TVs, and some TVs have special motion-judder-cancelling modes that I think throttle the screen's refresh rate to 24Hz. The ideal thing would be if a TV was able to increase or throttle its own refresh rate to match the game's framerate, but there's nothing out there that does it.

Interesting; thanks for the info.

Yes its only black or white! No middleground allowed. Regardless of its framerate. SP and MP ARE different games in the fps genre. SP is where all those fancy effects and scripted events happen with AI opponents. MP is against human players where response (60 fps) is crutial. But whatever...

I guess with the final SDK now in hand they can finally see how far they can optimize the game, Same with Drive Club.

Great news.

Guerrilla are technical gods if they manage to make a game that pretty run at 60fps and at 1080p.

I think people will be very surprised if they think any of the launch games are really pushing this system. Just wait a few years and shadowfall will be that mediocre looking launch game

Not going to hold my breath but I'll definitely give up some effects, post-processing, polygons, whatever to get 60fps. Hell I do that to every PC game I play on my aging 6850 and without any regret

Did you just call me a modern gamer? Damn.

But yeah, going from COD to KZ is not the same thing because the two games are completely different. This will be the same game, the same art direction, same weapons, same sound, but in 60fps. It'll definitely be weird.
I used "modern gamer" in reference to the multitude of "issues" that are raised these days. You only raised a single issue.

I think it is a great idea to do it that way. While I won't play the multi-player others love it and want 60FPS for it. I don't mind 30 for the single player if it is slower moving with huge open levels.

Based on the PS4 OS Demos shown so far, they kind of are separate games now, since you can jump directly into MP or SP separately from the OS.

And, honestly, is this really anything new for an FPS with dedicated campaign and MP modes? I can't think of any FPS where switching from the campaign to the MP really felt the same for me, for a variety of reasons.
