Man, reading The Hobbit again at the moment and it's amazing the amount of little things that occupy so little space in the book but you just KNOW are going to be a big part of the movies.

Looking forward to seeing Beorn in battle!

EDIT: I assume we're OK with (third film) spoilers in here?

Spoiler tags would still be best for stuff that actually takes place in the book, speculation about what might happen is fine.

Fair enough. Wasn't sure whether I should spoiler the name in my previous post.

Need to expand my knowledge after finishing this. I think I have The Silmarillion in my Amazon wishlist, I'm sure that's as good a place to start as any. Hopefully I have the stomach for it, I'm more of a story person than a lore person.

Confession time:

I really, honestly think that I'll end up enjoying and loving The Hobbit trilogy more than the LOTR trilogy.

Maybe it's because I just enjoy The Hobbit more than The Lord of the Rings as a story.

I do too man. I I fucking LOVE the LOTR trilogy. I just have this feeling that the Hobbit is going to be bonkers in scope and atmosphere.

Did people not like the hyena Wargs? They were awesome.
They're not given much of a description in the books as far as I can remember (see what I mean about not remembering the details?), they come across as larger more vicious wolves. The newer images back that up, and are more menacing to me than the LOTR efforts (which always reminded me of the dog versions of the gatekeeper/keymaster in Ghostbusters. :p).

The Silmarillion can be a pretty heavy read depending on how you approach it. I read it after I finished LotR but before I read The Hobbit. In a way in was good because it familiarized me with Middle-Earth before diving into the back-story of everything (including the Histories of Middle-Earth).

The downside of doing that was the fact that - in The Lord of the Rings - Tolkien had the obnoxious habit of referring to people/places from the history of Middle Earth but didn't bother to elaborate on them. It wasn't until I got to The Silmarillion that I was finally able to start connecting all the dots. It actually made my second read-through of The Lord of the Rings much more enjoyable.

I have to imagine that was frustrating to fans before the Silmarillion was finally published in 1977.

Ideally, The Silmarillion and The Lord of the Rings should have been published together. That's what Tolkien wanted. They would be companion pieces to be read together, but the publishers had no interest in The Silmarillion, much to Tolkien's annoyance and despair in his final years.

Number45 this should wet your appetite for The Silmarillion. Its scale/scope is beyond anything in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

I don't mind the wargs in LOTR. I guess I always just likened them to being Goblin variants away from the rest of the species.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Chronicles: Art and Design marks the beginning of a series of comprehensive and beautifully presented books created by the artists at the heart of the film-making process. It accompanies the intensely anticipated movies from New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures and MGM: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: There and Back Again.

The first chronicle in the series, Art and Design presents hundreds of full colour conceptual drawings and paintings, along with set designs, sculpture and glorious photography across more than 200 pages.

The book showcases art by the film’s concept art directors, Academy Award® Winner Alan Lee and John Howe alongside work from other artists of the film’s 3 foot 7 Art Department, Costume Department and Weta Workshop.

It truly is a unique opportunity to see artwork by a wide range of artists across a multitude of disciplines in the film-making community of Wellington, New Zealand and to hear directly from them about the inspiration behind their work.

Included is a Foreword by Academy Award winner Dan Hennah, 3 foot 7 Production Designer for the films. The book also features commentaries by Dan, 3 foot 7 Costume Designer Ann Maskrey, Academy Award Winners Peter King, 3 foot 7 Make-up and Hair Designer, and Weta Workshop’s Design and Special Effects Supervisor Richard Taylor. In addition to artist quotes, cast members reflect on the work and share insights into their involvement in the design process.

“We are very excited to be creating a series of books that celebrate the amazing work that is being done on The Hobbit movies. They will show the incredible attention to detail that goes into everything that is being produced for these films and are a wonderful opportunity to showcase the designs and artistry of so many people within their respective departments.” Richard Taylor, Weta Workshop.

Readers will be able to follow the design process as it unfolds with early sketches and final designs. The book offers an unprecedented insight into the conceptual processes behind the making of an epic film.

“We are thrilled to be involved with the Weta Publishing team in the creation of the Hobbit (Specialist) Books. It is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the work produced by our amazingly talented artists & craftspeople who are responsible for conceptualizing, designing & building the sets, props and dressings for The Hobbit.” Dan Hennah, 3 foot 7 Art Department.

The book is written by Weta Workshop senior designer Daniel Falconer. Daniel has an excellent pedigree in all things related to Middle-earth, being a pivotal concept designer on The Lord of the Rings and now part of the Weta Workshop design team on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. He is also an avid fan of the books of J.R.R. Tolkien, making him eminently suited to telling the stories of the artisans’ work based on Tolkien’s book; The Hobbit.

So what is everyone expecting for the Hobbit OT? Something minimalistic like The Dark Knight Rises OT or something more akin to the ever so slightly OTT OP for the first trailer. Or something comedic.

IMO you should keep it clean. Pertinent information. All trailers, video blogs, release dates, link to released OST tracks etc.

I'm not a big fan of OP's that take up a third of the page with stills from the film. I don't think anybody ever cares about stills and usually just makes for more scrolling.

I need something that changes the way I see movies.

Pretty much what Sculli said, no need to go overboard with it.

But be sure that Biblio Boggins is included.

The higher Dwarf quotient is definitely a tick on the Hobbit's side.

Actually, I really fucking love this world and it's lore. I'm totally okay with Dantes just copy-pasting his massive previous OP in.

I'm all about minimalist Ops, but in the case of Tolkien I take exception.

Oh man that's soo awesome

As for the OT, I think we all trust in your instincts

Points taken.

Now to get in touch with a certain Gif making legend. ;)

Is there a quality Middle Earth map app on iOS? I'd love to have a nice interactive map while I read LoTR. I finished the Fellowship of the Ring a few weeks ago and took a short break before jumping into The Two Towers. Having a nice way to orient yourself in the world while reading the books would be very useful. The included maps are kind of a pain to reference, especially with the tome I chose to buy.

Now that it is confirmed, what do we all expect/want to see?

Personally, I want more beautiful landscapes, Elves, more dwarve action, some enemies, a shadowy sneak peek of Smaug the Magnificent and Howard Shore's brilliance.

2:25 spoils too damn much. The first teaser was enough for me. now to wait up three years for collectors edition. I lost my virginity to the extended trilogy. True story.

I doubt anything significant from the second or third films will be shown. A shadow of Smaug, maybe.

I'd be happy if they just focused on the Unexpected Party chapter, introducing the Dwarves and younger Bilbo and some shots of Gandalf, a quick over view of what they intend to do but for 2:25, I expect a lot more action.

You read my mind. At the top of my list is definitely more interplay between Bilbo, Gandalf and the dwarves. I think we're likely to see hints of Riddles in the Dark as well.

I made the mistake of buying the soundtracks far later in the game. This time I buy them right away. First the original OSTs. And then when the extended one comes out I pick that up.

It's gonna be hard to show some self restraint and wait for the mega collector's edition though since we have to wait more than 3 years for this trilogy to finish as well :(

Art books too!

FUCK now I know how those Star Wars fans feel.

Hopefully our six-part series won't...end the same way their's did :( I'm having visions of insane 6-movie Tolkien-a-thons in the future, and I would love it if each movie was excellent. We're three-for-three so far, c'mon Jackson....

If An Unexpected Journey is my Phantom Menace I don't know if I could go on.

It is in Peter Jackson that we must place our hope.

Jackson? Jackson's weak. The blood of New Zealand is all but spent, its pride and dignity forgotten. I was there Dantes, I was their three thousand years ago when the strength of the film industry failed and The Lovely Bones was released.

It should have ended that day, but evil was allowed to endure.

The trilogy stands upon the edge of a knife. If they stray but a little it will fail to the ruin of all.

Yet hope remains while Peter and Co are true to Tolkien's vision.

I would say all six star wars films are some of the best pieces of filmmaking I ever seen. ^^ I am looking forward to The Hobbit movies, even though it should be two, and also I haven't liked any Peter Jackson movie yet. I'll watch it and keep an open mind. I do love The Hobbit book though :)
