Aonuma: Zelda Wii U Trailer Wasn’t Just In-Engine, It was Actually Gameplay

Tech demo Link was so lifeless....

Can't the bow-firing animation at the end be some sort of finisher move, like in Arkham games? You fire the arrows normally and when it's time for the finishing move it sometimes goes into an animation. Or a special attack like context-sensitive A in Wind Waker that goes into that animation.

Honestly, everything else looks like it could easily be gameplay, only shown from a different perspective than you'd usually get.

WWHD has enough framerate problems as is, probably adding AA would just have made it much more notable. Anytime any sort of explosion happened the FPS dropped significantly.
Most HD ports suffer from this though, and my assumption was always that it was a byproduct of porting an antiquated game (over a short dev cycle) to a more modern architecture. I mean if wii u was powerful enough to readily emulate gc wind waker without optimization at 1080 and still maintain a stable framerate I wouldn't be surprised at all. So obviously I wasn't that surprised that 1080p WWHD port with added effects had slowdown.

I am skeptical but would love to be proven wrong that you can do everything is that trailer (with traditional camera angle) in-game without qte.

When Aonuma (note: almost called him Sakurai, lol) was showing the field behind him, I wanted to jump through my computer screen, throw him out of the way and just start exploring the heck out of that place

Why is this so surprising? I mean, it looked amazing and it's cool that they got it running like that on the Wii U, but you can easily tell it's a Wii U game.

ya, you can tell right? cause wii u is not even as powerful as an xbox 360 or ps3 or so a lot of people claimed.

I personally don't think people should pay any attention to the specifics really. It's going to look the way it's going to look and Nintendo doesn't really hesitate in rolling out the production value for Zelda games. You can all be sure that they will try to make as much use of the hardware available as possible, and we all know the relative capabilities of the Wii U from well before this reveal. Bigger question is if more games will devote resources and development time to match or attempt to match this particular game's ability to "push" the console.

I understand people doubting with the way the industry is today, but from the first moment I knew it was actual gameplay.

I don’t think anyone is doubting it’s gameplay, people are doubting if it’s direct gameplay, which would pretty much mean the last part was a QTE....

That’s what it sounds like in the OP, but I’m sure he means its gameplay but they’ve just edited the camera angle for a much more cinematic trailer.

This has the potential to be the game of all time. Of course that's based on nothing but potential, but the LoZ series has always been heralded as it was, and now it's taking a gigantic leap forward with dynamic, beautiful, open world adventures. This is the stuff if dreams.

I really hope we get something else on the game before the end of E3. Even just a developer chat or some stills or something. Considering it probably won't be released until holiday 2015 I'm thinking Nintendo are purposely holding back until E3 next year.

I hope that with Nintendo now being all about Directs and such, we get periodic updates on this game with fresh glimpses at new content, rather than having to wait until next E3.

Won't happen. No console Zelda news 'til E3. That's the way it be.

*cries to sleep*

One of the prettiest games I have ever seen. So excited for this! Well done Nintendo! More gameplay footage soon please!

Curious, anyone think it's a little strange how the water appears to be realistic, but the water splashing and physics are cel shaded?

I'm not saying that's a bad thing, just seems like a weird style choice.

Wind Waker had QTEs, this wouldn't be anything new for the series.

The water in the background when "Link" pulls off his/her cloak is amazing. But Nintendo does need to tone down their use of bloom.

I think the artstyle is kind of a hybrid. Even the large field in the beginning and some not-quite-realistic shading going on. It's an interesting choice.

Probably so you can see Link when he swims underwater? The Wind Waker style water wasn't see through which meant that there was no swimming (or any real water based gameplay/puzzles...even though the game is set across an ocean and there's a section under the ocean).

Looks fine to me. It meshes with the rest of the art style.

I don't believe it. I also don't believe that there won't be 3 hours of handholding and tutorials and a weird messenger creature to help guide your way

lol I remember seeing some videos show up on YouTube with "CG Trailer" as title, can't people at least invest 5 seconds in checking the screenshots? that's what it'd take them to notice they were in-engine.

Huh, I said in the Hyrule Warriors thread that it was strange that I was this excited for Zelda. Now I'm excited about two Zelda titles. Really looking forward to seeing a little more of this.

I wonder if that is the moment when it becomes apparent that something has gone horribly wrong in Hyrule? Link's call to heroism, as it were. That would explain all the destruction, as it's a one-off scene and those things can stay destroyed.

To everyone focused on the cloak, it's possible it was there simply for the dramatic unveil. There's no guarantee that it will be in the game.

Or perhaps, for story reasons, Link is in-hiding and the cloak allows him to conceal his presence. However, upon attacking an enemy, he's forced to remove it revealing his location.

Ugh, so excited to learn more. If Nintendo showcases a hands-on demo tomorrow, or a proper full-length trailer, on the Treehouse stream, I'm not so sure I'd be able to survive that.

Was having similar thoughts. Maybe it's a hint at a visible/invisible world system. Could allow some neat GamePad usage with different visibility levels between the 'Pad and TV Screen.

Not at Twilight Princess levels, no... but come on...
What was that rabbit thing? Weird messenger creature.

I made a mistake coming into this thread. Put down your Hyrule Historia Lore books!!!! I'll leave quietly.....

He was a salesman not a companion. He didn't follow you throughout the game at all, he just sits in your house.

Not sure I fully believe that, but I'd love to be proven wrong.
Unless it's QTE cinematic stuff. Then I'd love to not be proven wrong at all. I doubt it is, though.

SO it was a big QTE sequence with the button prompts removed. Zelda U is going to suck hardcore.
You know in Wind Waker when you Z-target an enemy, wait for them to strike, then you get the flashy A button prompt and you can counter-attack? Maybe this is something similar, where if you're right next to an enemy, and you're aiming with your arrow from horseback, you get a prompt to perform a finisher.

Nope. The Japanese text just basically says it's in-engine, no mention of 'actuall gameplay'. Looks like a slight mis-translation and that thread title needs changing stat.

Sounds like a misunderstanding. That Miiverse post said nothing about "not only in-engine but gameplay", it said just "gameplay", which could mean "in-engine", and the translation only used the wrong word.
