MASS EFFECT: ANDROMEDA – Gameplay Series #1: Combat

I'm not really fond of this alien look so far. There is so much... meat on the side of his face. I'll probably get used to it, but still.

How female of his race looks at background is what Jaal design should have gone for, collar of his jacket comes maybe too up so it creates that... meaty look.

Ugh.

This is an action RPG, fuck the lore being precise I don't want to be held back from all the fun shit I can do because "immersion needs to be perfect".

Mass Effect was never about that kind of perfect immersion anyway, it's an OTT space opera with b-movie flavours. I'll never understand this kind of nitpicking, especially for /this/ series.

And this ladies and gentleman, is what happened with the series since the glorious ME1

This is the first video that's gotten me excited for Andromeda. The combat looks great and I like the changes to abilities and classes.

I'd still like to see a long video showing mission design and just what we're actually going to be doing around the combat. Bioware has been pretty lackluster, to say it lightly, in that area.

I think I'm going to have a tough time choosing between 4K (supersampling) and Enhanced graphics mode on PS4 Pro on a 1080p TV.

Rise of the Tomb Raider looked incredible with supersampling...more impressive than the Enriched mode IMO. Wonder if this game will be the same.

I prefer how Horizon is doing it...blending the modes.

Can't wait for a new video so we can talk about something else besides character models.

Kinda hope we're getting a video showing us a smaller sidequest. It would be a bit spoilery, but I really wonder what the sidequests are going to look like and how much backstory they have.

Mass effect went from being Star trek to Guardians of the galaxy. I like both so i don't really mind. Can certainly understand the grievances and frustration of someone who likes the former but not the latter though.

aaaaand the crushing truth about modern game design rears its ugly head, can't do anything interesting with the game, no sir that would be entirely too unconventional, gamers gotta have their shootbang first and foremost, the rest is just background noise.

Let's go explore this new uncharted galaxy...and murder every fucking thing in it.

A good way to convey that the Ryders aren't seasoned soldiers would be to not have them gunning down dozens upon dozens of enemies with all manner of heavy ordnance in literally every trailer. Like, don't tell me they're just humble adventurers but then focus 90% of the marketing effort on all the different ways you can murder guys.

"Shoot from mid-air, use a flamethrower, respec on the fly to be ready for any murdering occasion, don't allow your enemies a moment of respite! Your weapon craves blood, and its thirst shall be slaked! Oh, but you're not a soldier, though".
Wasn't the issue before they didn't show enough gameplay snippets? This is the Gameplay Video #1 -Combat

The rest of the marketing effort hardly was just shoot you bang bang. Almost the contrary.
And this ladies and gentleman, is what happened with the series since the glorious ME1
Story aside they became leagues better games?

Lol.

Why take it to that extreme when I'm obviously talking about gameplay first ahead of /pedantic attention to lore/.

No bald cap? Lies!
There are plenty of ways to show the player that Ryder is young and inexperienced without having to resort to ME1 style combat where we can't hit the broadside of a barn. You know like how they react to situations and the options open to us in dealing with threats and problems that convey their lack of experience.

I don't give two shits if the marketing shows Ryder as some god of war, obliterating everyone one the battlefield without blinking an eye. All I care about is how they handle things in the actual game and that there is a sense of character development and progression from how we are at the start and who we are at the end. Which includes both our prowess in combat and our character outside of it.

How fucking intellectually dishonest to you have to be to come into a discussion about a gameplay video specifically focusing on combat in a franchise where one of the main three verbs is "shoot", where in the very first game you can kill over 400 enemies and then whine "Ugh so much killing".

Let me follow this quote chain back to it's origin. What exactly isn't precise about the lore? Don't just throw out comments into a vacuum here.

The main character of the first game is one of humanity's most elite soldiers before the game even really starts too LMAO.

Do people even remember the first game at all? You're an elite human soldier in a story about humanity who joins an elite galactic black-ops group who then proceeds to shoot their way through the galaxy.

How is showing what looks like mid-game gameplay ability wise, discredit the characters in any way or form!? These are Elite people that were chosen for the mission, they may not have the experience but it's very easy to immagine that they are capable to do what they're showing here at a further point in the story. You don't need years to become a war veteran and hardened warrior lol.

Both default Ryders suck but Scott is way worse imho.

Yeah I think Sara looks much better than Scott. Will definetily have to create a new character at least for him.

Now that I think about it, could people on PC mod Sheploo's face in the game?! haha, that would make me double-dip for sure.

Knowledge is power, guard it well
I'm really hoping that they just haven't yet put in the PC UI, because this power wheel, favorite abilities shit is wack.

It'd be a huge regression for PC players to now be restricted to such a system. I need my #1 through #0 key command bar napalm.

This power wheel is more for balancing purposes than lack of space or buttons I imagine.

Character customization needs the character codes back so you can copy other peoples creations without trying to match sliders
I brought this up in the community thread, and I was told that Bioware's not likely to bring face codes back for the same reason they didn't for Inquisition: too many values to keep track of.

I do hope that there's at least some kind of numerical value for each customizable aspect that we can jot down ourselves though. Has anybody asked a Bioware dev about this on Twitter or something?

OK cool, sounds a lot like the enriched graphics setting in Rise of the Tomb Raider then

Yeah. Don't you think the 4K mode with its supersampling was more impressive on a 1080p TV for Rise of the Tomb Raider than Enriched mode? That's definitely how I felt. So I would probably roll with 4K mode for Mass Effect too.

I took stab at it.

If you can swap loadouts on the fly then having all the available powers available via number keys shouldn't break any balance in theory. However, I see them enforcing profiles on PC as profiles seem to get bonus stats/etc.
