But literally nothing happens in GJ-bu. It has fewer punchlines than Seitokai no Ichizon. :(

(I watch it out of OCD :()

Seitokai no Ichizon Lv. 2 and its first season in that respect, bored me much much more than GJ-bu. I can only think of a one or two of GJ-bu skits that I wanted to skip till now, granted its still ongoing.

Though the currently ongoing last 2 episodes of Seitokai no Ichizon Lv. 2 has been quite good, I still prefer the GJ-bu crew and its slow delivery.

How'd you wind up with 41 wives at only level 287, anyway?
I guess you spent coins on wife slots?
Yeah, I realized that I couldn't unlock cards with coins because they are trying to scam you by giving you shitty gifts, so I figured that getting more characters was a better use of the coins.

Like I said, it's all about min/maxing!

I honestly don't think anything was particularly funny in this episode. It was just girls being moe. Chess girl wants to step on the guy and is embarrassed, tea girl has a hairgasm, green girl is annoying, and meat girl doesn't like vegetables. I guess it's more honest than Haganai at least. lol

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

The film that, for many of us, first brought Mamoru Hosoda into the spotlight, is also arguably his best. The more I watch this, the more I appreciate the carefully layered character development, foreshadowing, cinematography, and some of the best editing you'll find in an anime film. Other than that one scene, it's an impeccably directed film from start to finish. There's always some new nuance to appreciate, some subtlety in the extravagant and elastic animation that you didn't notice before.

Watching these works in chronological order, it's quite apparent how much digital technology has advanced, and how Hosoda has improved his use of them. The scene where Makoto first leaps uses some really interesting stylized animation that I haven't seen anywhere else; I'm not sure how much of it is 3D versus traditional animation. I also really like the more subtle use of CGI when
time freezes
.

Another detail I thought about this time was the repeated use of a towering cloud as visual symbolism. There are some obvious thematic connections to the story if you think about it; clouds are ephemeral and transient, so there's an element to them that signifies inevitable change, or mono no aware, which makes their prominence in Makoto Shinkai's films understandable. But clouds are also something we cannot grasp or reach, or control; in this way they can represent the unseen future or even time itself. So it's only fitting that
the film ends with Makoto gazing at the clouds as she makes peace with her time spent with Chiaki and the future that awaits her
.

I think that one thing that contributes to the film's instant masterpiece status is the number of scenes that immediately feel iconic. There's the two
bike on the train crossing
scenes, which make masterful use of editing, sound design, and animation to create truly memorable setpieces. There's also the scene where Makoto first learns how to time leap, with the skipping stone, the scene where
time freezes
, and of course the penultimate scene and the
faux kiss
. There's a certain power to a finely-crafted story told within the confines of a feature-length film; you run the gamut of emotions from laughing to crying, and you feel like know the characters personally after a brief ninety minutes together. Such a remarkable movie.

Haha, I certainly wasn't expecting that ending. It's great how this started off as feeling really exciting but slowly turned to a far more serious and harrowing turn only to pull back to the more relaxed tone most familiar to this show. The umbrella scene was pretty cool
even if it was a dream (or was it?!)
and the
massive catball
at the end got me pretty good. Damn good stuff.

Thank God someone else mentioned this. I was starting to worry that I was the only one who has a heart.
I mean, he should've been more proactive but still, it's just gotta hurt so bad. :(

I still think the live action movie did the whole time travel gimmick in a more interesting way.

But I'll admit that having the girl
travel back through time herself
makes for a more interesting story.

I'm quite surprised you haven't watched this till now.

That was what I was going for while watching this anime, much less for the comedy and more for the cute.

Well, maybe it does, I can't say. But I strongly doubt it's as well-directed, edited, or acted as Hosoda's film is.

He has. He's rewatching all the Hosada movies because of the furry movie coming up.

Well, I guess if that's what you're there for... But at that point, you might as well rewatch K-On!!, which has moe and storytelling. lol

The girl who voiced the girl in the anime also starred as the girl in the live action film. :p

Which live-action? The recent one or the 80's original?

Hosoda's TGWLTT is very nearly an original work anyway. There's not much left in the movie that connects it to the original work outside the title, themes and minor riff raff.

Wolf Children is the true Hosoda masterpiece. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time second half and ending is flawed.

The Hosoda film is a pseudo-sequel since
Auntie Witch
is implied to be the protagonist of the original story.

The new one... which is also a spinoff of the original in some way, I believe. I actually posted about it here way back when.

But voice-acting /= live-action acting. Plus actors are only as good as their director- see any George Lucas film.
Well, it's not like I remember the specifics of either film beyond their premises and how they handled the science fiction gimmick. At the very least, the motivations are a lot clearer in the live action film which results in a much more effective ending.

I mean, if I remember correctly,
there's no real reason why the guy can't stay or why she can't go with him back to the future in the anime, is there?

Ah, for me unlocking cards on characters I actually like is the whole point, haha.

I had to look this up. Holy shit, you're right.

o.o

I did not know this. My mind is blown.
Yep! It's why I almost thought that the anime and the movie were related. lol

Hey, you're still alive. And we agree apparently. lol

If I was willing to spend money on the characters knowing that I would lose at least half my investment in being "scammed" by the RNG, that would probably make sense. lol
But since I'm just using what little scraps I get from the daily bonuses, I have to be careful now if I want to see the new cards. :(

I don't think the mechanics of time-travel are ultimately important, because any backwards time-travel doesn't make sense anyway. I think the implication is that
you have to go back to your "original" time when your charges are used up, and Chiaki got in trouble with whoever is in charge of time travel because he used it to save two people who were in trouble because another person was messing with time. Also I don't think Chiaki would agree to inflict his grimdark post-apocalyptic future on Makoto
.

Hmm. Well, I'll just say that the live action has a similar situation, but the girl is in Chiaki's position and... well, I'll say that the ending is also mono no aware, so the outcome of that particular story point is pretty obvious. lol

Ultimately, I recall the reasons why the characters had to be split up a bit arbitrary. It's almost like that last Shinkai film, in a way. It's why the live action version had a much more emotional impact on me at least (which is why I still remember it).

That said, the live action version has its own share of problems. Their representation of time travel was the worst thing ever. lol

Are there any websites that you guys trust for reviewing anime old and current? I'm always wary when reading about the older shows that the nostalgia effect is in place with the reviewer.

Also, are there any informative, witty, and well-written blogs about anime and its culture? Something a casual could dip into and still enjoy?
(NB: If you think there exist more than seven videogames with good writing, I don't personally consider you qualified to answer this question)

Finally, are there any internet places offering a more academic slant on its analysis? You know, beyond the usual thinking that Neon Genesis Evangelion has philosophical depth or something because it has Christian references and angsty soliloquies.

Haly thinks there are more than 7 videogame stories that are good. Ignore him.

World of Warcraft has the best story of any game, because the greatest stories are the ones we make for ourselves.
