Winter of Anime 2013 |OT -6| How much lower can we go?!

I didn't think Yu-Gi-Oh character designs could get any worse after GX, but holy hell. Those screenshots are godawful.

I thought GX's designs were pretty tame. Like passable in the real world. 5D was starting to push it, but besides random parts of the hair being different color was still ok.

ZeXal just throws all sense of character designs out the window into space.

The original show's designs were of a specific time and place. They were kind of terrible, but worked in a kid's show. By the time GX rolled around, that design style ran out of steam. I personally found the show kind of painful to look at. Strange how it has gotten even worse.

DTL must have love this one. Stupid sexy hisoka.

Wonder what's gonna happen! hmmmm

I really wish they would have gone with the "Hisoka changes his hair color every arc" thing the manga and original series had. I get why they didn't, but it feels like a part of his character is missing in a way.

Well someone was sure trying to sell the viewer on Flit still being capable.

I think that might be the first softening of Flit's character seen so far: he actually called out for Kio before the AGE-3. Definitely some palpable discomfort on Flit's behalf for being marginalized when issuing orders and demanding repairs too.
Right back at it when chewing Asemu out though. Can't believe he's still so scared of his father that he actually sought permission to rescue his kid.

Serial Experiments Lain-
This was an experience. I can't describe it any other way. It's like watching a mix of Killer 7, Videodrone, and Blood-C all mixed together for maximum effect. It's a true descent into madness, both literally and figuratively. At the core of the story are relationships moreso than anything else. Not only how humans relate to each other but themselves as well. What does it mean to be yourself? Is it just your memories or possibly how people remember you? It really exploits the Unreliable Narrator trope to such a heavy degree that it makes the show hard to watch at times.
I wasn't really impressed with the animation itself except for a short sakuga segment at the end. What I was impressed by though was the visuals in of itself. During the daytime, there is this blinding use of glare which gives the impression of this flawless and perfect world compared to the shadows where there are these almost bloody spots. It creates the impression of two contrasting worlds, similar to the Wired and Real. It ties into the message at the end, that these two aren't some separate world or that one exists to serve the other. Instead they're complimentary and exist to create one cohesive unit. The visuals are also good at establishing the atmosphere through creating these eerie environments such as the nightclub Cyberia. There is also the way that the setting reflects Lain such as how empty and boring the room of Lain is at the beginning of the show till near the end when it's filled with electronics. It's a perfect reflection of Lain's development over the course of the show. There is also a number of discomforting close-ups that do a good job of detailing the inner turmoil in the characters. The show also heavily repeats the visual motifs in regards to the electricity poles to not only symbolize how everything is interconnected but the way the camera is angled creates this layer between the city and the audience similar to how Lain viewed the world.
The soundtrack is interesting. That's the best way I can put it. It's used sparingly, instead there are long moments of silence that are used to create these awkward moments. There does seem to be more pieces near the end but they seem more detached from the main narrative/show itself. One is used effectively in the last episode to show the contrast in mood compared to earlier episodes. I do have to praise the sound editing though such as the constant buzzing, which is that of the humming near power sources and cables. It's a very low-key way of complimenting the powerlines seen throughout the show.
I do think the exploration of themes of interconnectivity and the role of the Internet were certainly more interesting compared to the basic examination in Dennou Coil. Here, there really isn't a right answer and it's much more of a 'mess'. The show also puts a very emphasis on perception. Does God exist because we perceive him to? If so, then does that mean that God exists in every human who believes in him? The show is also a fundamental examination of religion, not only of the more traditional kind but cults as well. There is this examination and refusal that humans can survive in isolation. Humans crave intimacy on some level and without it, all that's left is a shell.

I did have some issues with the pacing in that the show can really drag throughout the run but it's obviously intentional to create a more tragic and dramatic atmosphere. I also thought the show really went a bit overboard at times with some of the messages in that they directly spell it out for the audience in segments where it's just someone talking straight to Lain/the audience. The show in general is also pretty abstract which can make it hard to follow at times. I definitely didn't pick up on everything and I know I never will.

One thing this show absolutely excels in is presence through absence.

Also a very good episode. I'm swiftly falling for this show. It's fast-paced, the characters are interesting, and while Madoka insists upon being the hotblooded protagonist of a straightforward mecha show, the world around her keeps getting more ambiguous. Muginami, in particular, made some good points at the end of the episode about just how selfless Madoka actually is, And Villaguillio (I think?) continues to be a hard-to-believe he's really the villain kinda guy. He acts, in some ways, rather like Madoka herself. I like that the girls are not what they initially appear to be. Lan isn't the super-smart, stoic girl she appears, as we've seen from her flashbacks. Muginami isn't the stupid fanservice girl she initially seemed, and if the people around her are any indication, Madoka might not be as selfless and upbeat as she appears.

Also the mecha action is clean and shiny. Not full of tension, but not "Oh boy, look at the AGEFX pwn more guys. Who didn't see this coming?" either.

Such a good show. Maybe not on the same tier as Gurren Lagann and The Big O, definitely not Martian Successor Nadesico levels, but defs on par with Full Metal Panic!.

Has anyone watched Tonari no Kaibatsu? Now that I have caught on One Piece, I needed to watch another show and since this season suck realy badly, so I picked this one to compliment my Shoujo cravings alongside Chihayafuru. what do people think of it?

It was pretty good, but not very consistent. I really enjoyed the first few episodes, when the pace was really face and it was funny. Then it got bogged down in the slowjo-relationship-which-goes-nowhere phase in the middle part, and never really climbed out of it. Since the manga is still running, there wasn't really much of an ending either. But it was fun while it lasted at least. Short series.

Great show, characters are lovable if not a bit annoying at times, and it's pretty fun overall. Natsume is love.

It's good. It's also a show that begs for a S2 but probably won't get one. =/

Great show with a really funny and interesting cast and some great moments. It lags a bit in the middle (but only for a bit), but then it gets better than ever after that. Highly worth watching.

A sequel to a Brains Base show? I guess I'll be praying for that Kamisama Dolls sequel too.

I'm kinda unfazed by pandering at this point in my life. But the colors really do make it an attractive show.

The general consensus is to call him Google Video.

I can dig that. Sounds that way when Madoka talks about him.

Things ripped off from Evangelion this episode:
The entire plot involving an angel being up in orbit.
The phrase "I am I/Me"
Quon's forged past.
Original things:
That Haruka knew Ayato when she was young.

Unfortunately that's just there way of explaining away the whole Misato x Shinji.

Interesting for an episode or two at best. The series is almost entirely devoid of substance or meaning. The plain and completely unremarkable cast are unable to carry the show after the story quickly runs out of momentum.

Great show. Needs a second season very badly because it kind of just stops halfway through.

To counterbalance dimb, I found it one of the most emotionally affecting animes I've ever seen, but then again I identified very heavily with the female protagonist.

Forget about shit getting real. At this point shit just happens and I'm just not following any of it anymore. This whole business with the sister, for instance, would have a lot more impact if I actually cared about any of it and I would care more about it if I had any sort of clue whatsoever as to what's going on with her. Instead, this whole conspiracy they've been dangling in front of our faces since the beginning while failing to build up on it in any meaningful way falls completely flat on its face. It's just one nebulous mystery after another at this point with no real feeling of build-up to make it seem like it's something the characters are actively working towards and make me feel invested in trying to figure it out myself. If Hyouka's mysteries are too mundane for me to care then these mysteries are too esoteric for me to give a fuck about anymore.

Aki's sister is an even bigger asshole than the main character. That is literally my main takeaway from these couple of episodes. I think I'm supposed to believe she has her own agenda and motives for being an asshole but the show has done a piss poor job of even hinting at why that might be.

it suffers a bit towards the end from being so short but Natsume is your goddess.

Huh, I just noticed the Chibi-Usa character. Great!

But really, the episode was a bit of a mess. You throw in the ridiculous concept of
Precure Batman
with the fake tragedy porn of
a girl who turns into the Hulk
and just some poor direction and nothing comes together. It's both not funny and not emotional... when it was trying to be both.

Or maybe this is a case of the bad writing being on purpose and this is so meta that you have to appreciate the bad quality of the episode in order to realize how brilliant it is? :p

Speaking of which, and I'll bring this up again in a bit, but animators shouldn't write in cameras in their fiction if they know they can't actually properly show how archive footage is supposed to work. It's so lazy when this "security camera" somehow catches the transformation exactly the way that the audience would have seen it.

They sort of do the same thing here, except that in this case it's more than the family film has been edited into a perfect montage and doesn't actually look like a home video. Maybe everyone shoots movies on iphones and uses ilife to edit their stuff, but I kind of doubt it.

It's a small thing to bitch about, but after the ridiculous use of cameras in Ginga e Kickoff!!, I can't help but notice when animators cheap out on this stuff now. And I have a high tolerance for shit looking bad, so for me to be bothered by this is certainly a special event. :p

Even :wonzo doesn't really bother me:

lol

Anyway, I'm glad that Ena actually became a character... it only took 47 episodes, but they realized that they couldn't completely ignore her anymore. Of course she's as good as dead now that the group is expanding to 20 people, but hey, it was nice while it lasted.

Maturity, bitches.
What would we talk about? This season is horrendous.
You could spend the hour talking about how great I am while referring to me as BGBW-sama.

We'll never do a podcast because an unsustainable number of people will understandably want a piece of the pie and there's no point in the effort when there's not a significant audience beyond this thread. And laziness. Mostly laziness.
I'm sure if this were to become a regular thing you'd have a small team who were willing to do each one with everyone else just popping along as guest stars every so often. Enough pie for everyone.

I'm sure all you need to do if think of some conversational points to begin with and just let it go from there. If one topic dies just pick another one from the hat of things to talk about.

Or bring up waifu wars again.

A good separate mic is like $15. What's the problem?
That's $15 not going towards a game for the backlog.

BGBW

Maturity, bitches.
Yes.

But the problem is that I usually do this while I'm drawing. I'll grip my sturdy wacom pen in one hand, and use the other for myself. So it kinda feels like playing Virtual On in the arcade.

Pretty dull episode overall. It had it's moments but for such an apparently important milestone Tokyo was, not much happened for most of the episode. Kaito and Akiho's relationship was super cheesy this episode and pretty dull. They have an interesting foundation with the whole cruise accident and time distortion stuff but haven't really done anything with it. Aside from being super cute and bubbly, Akiho's really just boring, cementing Frau as the best character in the show. The ending was an unexpected set up for the next episode but I don't really understand what's happening which just left me with a sense of confusion instead of excitement or intrigue.

ToonamiGAF already has their second podcast out.

What are we waiting for?

When was Chad ever supposed to be an "integral part of the cast"? Renji is meant to lose? What? An anti-bleach agenda is depressing to hear, the anime is really good and even superior to Yu Yu Hakusho. Bleach rips off JJBA? How?

oh and those bleach manga spoilers.

I guess I should clarify that I don't really care if there's ever any similar AnimeGAF project or not, I was just impressed that they seem to be aiming to make it a semi-regular thing.

Anyway, I won't bring it up again if it causes problems here.

No please do, I doubt Id ever go into the toonamigaf thread to see when the next is posted, especially when they get to the epic conclusion of fake karakura.

We can bring up the bubbles idea for another month. At least there is plenty of material. I do worry of how easy they would be to read though, especially on mobile GAF.
