MS + NSA reveal. Wil this affect the Kinect?

I don't get why people would like to have a camera always on them and now with the NSA link (which a hell of a lot of people don't know what it's about) who would really want that?

thats me tho it's different for everyone

Of course it will impact them. We are talking about, others are talking about...even if its not a real issue, it may be perceived as one...and that's enough for most.

Its just one more negative of the xb1, real or not.

Wonder when they'll announce the version without Kinect.

They won't. It's a waste of money to not bundle it with the system because it won't catch fire again like the 1st Kinect did. This at least guarantees each XBO has a Kinect so if a developer wants to try something new with it, they know it won't be going to a niche part of the system's install base. They also designed the entire OS around the new Kinect. The entire system can be operated with just your voice, which I find slick as hell if all I want to do is watch a movie or tv.

Its just another negative aspect that is being even more magnified now considering the NSA debacle in the States.

We will see how people respond to having a camera in their living room, and i look forward to comparisons to smartphones that also have a camera, which are usually placed in ones pocket or on a desk and can easily be put away vs. a camera filming you in your living room.

Public surveillance used to be a sci fi thing and only wackos believed the government spied in them, but in 2013 it has become a real thing and many people perceive it as a problem.

Well this is...disturbing. At least I am able to choose with my wallet.

Better stop posting here, then. Better yet, throw out your computer, and also quit using a cell phone, and never leave your home too. Not buying an Xbox One because of privacy issues is a strange decision. Being upset with the federal government for data mining while criticizing others for doing the same thing is perfectly understandable, though. Not buying Xbox One because you don't want Kinect makes sense too.

Or you know, you could just fully power down the system with a button press on the hardware. Also, they have already said they are including options for shutting down certain features of the kinect if you don't want them.

But what about all the times you are actually using your Xbox complete television entertainment center? Can't exactly power down for that.

Hi all you people that have ever described someone as crazy and told them to take their tinfoil hat off when they said the government was listening in.

Can they be trusted to do this after all the bullshit that was fed people about always on? Personally I don't trust a thing they say any more.

My computer doesn't have a camera pointed at the living room 24/7.

Not buying Xbox One because you don't want Kinect makes sense too.

That's great advice at this point.

Sounds like a perfectly logical decision.

You've won this one, but I'll be back!

Company with the largest PC operating system userbase and VOIP service getting tapped by the NSA? Shocking.

No reason for Xbox to be nsa'd so that kinect spying stuff have no bearing logically.

What.

Yes, it does make perfect sense.

So you are making a leap of logic that they will avoid this one side of MS when it comes to data mining while mining all their other areas?

Well, then it needs to be on? Like I said a few posts ago, they are designing the OS around the use of the Kinect. You can disable the kinect, but it will still presumably still run a check to make sure it's plugged in.

This makes them look really bad, but I honestly don't think the Kinect will be sitting there uploading video to Microsoft. We'll find out when packet sniffers start examining what the Xbone is doing.

And even in the worst case scenario that it's uploading everything it sees, it would be a horrible spying device since you could prevent it from doing so by just tossing a blanket over it.

Yep. MS gave them rights to basically access every single bit of data they have.

It's nuts. They are apparently saying they legally have to... which is even more nuts. Fuck that noise.

9/11 changed everything. Didn't you see all the pictures and videos of Democrats proudly standing shoulder to shoulder with the Republicans on this?

People who have nothing to fear have nothing to hide. Are you a terrorist or something?

It doesn't need to send video. Encrypted audio ,or just encrypted data of what the Kinect sensor has analyzed about your surroundings (or more).

Skype is on everything anymore. I think your phone is more of an issue than a game console. You don't keep private things like pictures or text conversations on a console like you do a phone.

DING DING DING we have a winner.

If you are afraid of Kinect you sure as fuck better throw out your smart phone.

The NSA scandal and PRISM is going to hurt the Xbox One hard. Around the time of its launch, when the fact that an always online camera is a required part of the console, I expect to see mass market publications and at least one cable news pundit to call Kinect into question. While smartphones and laptops can and do track your data as well, something about having an Orwellian camera in the living room that never turns off is bound to creep out consumers, especially given what we know now.

The DRM situation was bad, but if the mainstream media starts addressing the privacy concerns of the Kinect I can't imagine the Xbox One seeing any success. It will be dead in the water.

So, you're telling me it's going to send them an outline of what my room looks like because of the IR sensor and that's going to be useful to anyone outside of Kinect engineers because?

You underestimate people's desire to play their video games.

I can remove my cell phone camera, put tape on it... ETC.

Can I do that with the Xbox One?

Rumor is that if you do the Xbox One won't function until the camera can recognize something. Black tape doesn't count.

Can thank all the politicians circa 9/11 for this. It's not a MS thing (or a Verizon thing or an ATT thing or an Apple thing.) It's us as a people. We panicked and allowed our freedoms to be given away, and now it's permanent. There ain't no going back.

As for Kinect in particular (or my internet history or my cell phone records or whatever) I couldn't care less about this "problem". I think the concern is greatly overblown. If I were really concerned about people knowing my business, I wouldn't own anything connected to the internet. I wouldn't use public wi-fi and I wouldn't be typing this on a public work PC using Windows.

Meh.

B-b-but everyone's just being conspiracy theorists!

The issue's not whether you're paranoid, Lenny shinobi, I mean look at this shit, the issue is whether you're paranoid enough.

Good thing about this is that we will accurately see how many absolutely ignorant people there are.

Outline of room... lol Of all things to send...

will it?

did it not already? I honestly think PRISM was part of MS's decision to reverse the 24 hour check-in/always online. Didn't PRISM break the week of E3?

Relevant quotes in the article:

From MS:

"we provide customer data only in response to legal processes."

From the NSA:

"The articles describe court-ordered surveillance"

So tell me, were the parties whose informations were "requested" made privy to this court order?

Story here...

Kinect conspiracies maybe true, after all? MS giving NSA access to their database has the potential to make people more skeptical towards the Kinect. MS gave the NSA access to their Skype database...

I won't be getting an X1 if Kinect remains a mandatory thing... :/

If you are going to be paranoid, be paranoid for the right reasons..

Assume all data flowing through common interception points in the 'cloud' is being eave dropped.. Skype, XBL, PSN, Facebook, Outlook, Gmail, Apple Mail, anything and everything going through online servers..

Having kinect in the home is as safe as your smartphone, smart TV or laptop webcam (i.e. if you are paranoid, get rid of them all now.. )

The difference is people can very easily tell if a 'device' on their own network is heavily uploading data, and you have the option of disconnecting it from your network when not in use..

Be glad we have such good public scrutiny and governments have to push back on such things or risk getting voted out..

Yeah from courts that have no independent public over site and have historically rubber stamped every request they've been given.

So.... that 'court-ordered' policy restraint is just a canard to placate dullards.

Well it's only a rumour at this point, so I'm not sure if you can claim as fact that black tape doesn't count, but I get your point.

Read the article.MS and the NSA only do it when court ordered. Which isn't anything new. And yes, I don't think the NSA will gather anything from Xbox one. Give me one good reason to?

Correct me if I am wrong, but when they say they are allowing the NSA to collect Skype Video, it can't be ALL the video right?

Wouldn't that take up more space than they ever could potentially have space for? The amount of memory would get out of hand incredibly quick.

Everyone did this but the difference was it was in the form of metadata. This is a whole different ball game. There were court ordered and then there's giving full access something that Microsoft completely did on their own. No one else is having this problem because they followed on one part of that guideline... However what's funny is that MS talks the loudest about privacy when it comes to Google but have no problem handing over information the same. One of my other reason why I hate MS

Remember when cellphones lasted like a week on a charge and now they last half a workday?

Whats different?

Clearly its due to their being a front facing cam and noise cancelling mic.
