FRIDAYTON: God abandons PS4 as The Great Flood wipes out Sony HQ [Up: Reveal in OP]

Can anyone give a quick summary of this thread and what's been happening?

For what I understand, there's a hint that Sony like Microsoft has only 5 GB of their 8Gb of ram, available for games. I don't see what's the big deal, since the Sony ram is supposed to be faster but people lost their Goddamm mind.

Pretty sure Sony is reserving the 2.5GB just to future proof itself. We have to remember that this console could potentially be around for 8 years, and who knows what could change in that time?

At least with Sony reserving that RAM from the very beginning, they won't have to sacrifice backwards compatibility with initial PS4 games if they decide to do something radical with the hardware/OS in the future. If they don't, they can always open up some of the RAM for developers to use.

And don't most current AAA PC games only use like, 3-4GB of RAM/VRAM total?

"The PlayStation 4 reserves 3.5GB of GDDR5 its 8GB memory for the operating system, leaving 4.5GB of space for game code, according to current documentation PS4 shown to Digital Foundry by a well-placed source in the studio. However, other sources suggest that an additional 1GB of "flexible memory" can be claimed of booking OS, based on availability."

I knew it! Lol

This multitasking craze is excessive.

Inefficient programming is also abundant. I recall 640kb was once more then enough! :p

Still, its better news then a delay or hardware issue, but somewhat disappointing its more even with xbox..

Yeah, you really only ever use more if you are doing some crazy multitasking of PS, Maya, and doing your WoW dailies or something.

Even when it does get up to 8GB it won't be GDDR5. I say Sony has a lot of room to work with, and can open up more as time goes on.

Having used the Vita, I love how they integrate their OS into the system. Of course people will let the salt flow through them.

Indeed. The OS should be embedded and running in its own pool of resources and not fighting for control of everything else on the system.
I miss they days when gaming OSes were just the thing that came up when the game failed to boot PS2/GCN/XBOX era style. All of these bloated features feel pointless to me. I rarely ever use a gaming system OS to do anything, and using a little less than half of the system memory for OS tidy work is a real put off on a console. I might as well buy a PC in that case, at least that OS has features I'll use.

yea you would love that wouldn't you? You would probably have 5 orgasms if 10 seconds if that were true.

I was actually just being cheeky, but it looks like the double-fakey turned out to be true.

Wow, this is huge for me. Really puts the two machines on par for gaming power. Now I may really have to decide wether or not kinect will be worth the bump in price.

GPU is weaker in xb
RAM is slower in xb
And less RAM, slower RAM, is potentially available for games in xb.

It doesn't change the landscape here.

I guess it's inevitable they had to use some RAM for the OS.
what I don't get it why they need 3.5 GB, it's not like they're trying to be a fake ass media box like a certain product starting with a X

It's still a bunch of RAM for a dedicated games console. This is going where it was always going really, which is that multi-platform games are basically equivalent between the two consoles, and exclusives are going to come down way more to the talent of the development teams. Same thing as last gen once everything settled(except the PS3s odd architecture gave some teams trouble on multiplatforms).

The question, as always, is where the games are.

Oh, that same DF that is consistently wrong about everything?

When the OS changes that drastically, of course you can.

What would the OS even change that drastically? The OS and features had to have been initially designed with 4GB in mind - when they upped it to 8GB why on Earth would they decide to drastically change the OS? Did the OS guys just decide to grab another couple of GB because it "was there"?

I'll wait and see but the figures just feel odd given what was known prior to the sneaky jump from 4GB to 8GB - they couldn't have been figuring on 512MB for games and 3.5 for Os when the design was based around 4GB and I'm struggling to imagine why they'd grow the OS footprint so drastically.

By the way, what happened to vgleaks ? They seemed to have all the new information back in February, but now you never hear of them...

I read many times "memory reserved for the OS" as if all that memory out to be occupied with the kernel and necessary OS system libraries. As I see it, that's not memory "just for the OS". It is memory that "can not be used by a game" because the OS can use it to maintain applications that require being in the background.

Therefore, if Sony or MS start to load the system with background applications that may be brought to the fore with no waiting time, although they can reduce the OS footprint in the future, it will be difficult to reduce the total amount of memory reserved.

Another thing I saw are comparission between consoles usable memory and amount of used VRAM on pc games. This comparison is not fair, as much as there is duplicate data in vram and ram to run a game, you can not disregard the amount of ram used uniquely. I've seen games running with 2 GB RAM + 2 GB into VRAM. And those are actual gen games that are designed to work with streaming in machines using only 512 mg. That is, the difference between 512 megs and 4 gb is spent exclusively on a final coat of paint.

They werent wrong about anything lately and were spot on with next-gen hardware leaks.
And no, situation with several/seven minutes doesnt count. It was Sony that gave up that info with crappy explanation and its not DF fault to pass it by.

That same Richard Leadbetter (the "ESRAM has more bandwidth, trust me, there's a special sauce for that" one) reporting the news.

After seeing everyone bash the Xbox one for using 3GB for the OS. This made me chuckle

Calling bullshit. Unless the PS4 can multitask on par with the Xbone there's no need for them to waste 3.5 gigs of GDDR5 ram.

Did Cerny not already talk about switching instantly between games? You can't do that if you have to load 7GB of RAM data from a hard drive when your average hard drive only does 100MB/sec read speeds on average (7GB / 100MB/sec = 70 seconds).

3.5GB of GDDR5 RAM utilized for OS bullshit is fucking ridiculous. I have Windows 7 with Firefox (3 tabs open), Ventrilo, Steam, Origin, EVGA Percision X, and other shit like that, and i'm not even using 2GB right now.

I'll still wait until and actual statement from Sony is made because this makes fuck all sense especially since the last word was 1GB for OS. No fathomable way the OS usage more then tripled overnight.

So after all is said and done this twitter guy (kr3at0r) was 100% on target with the drama, both pre and post reveal. When a Spaniard talks you listen!

Yes, but if your PC only had 2GB RAM you'd have trouble. Think of the 3.5GB as a partition, not the amount that's always being used.
