Round Two of the The NeoGAF N/A Hearthstone Superstar Open Challenge Season One!

Oh shit, really? My bad. I figured in most tourneys the participants would know opponent's decks after the first round so didn't think it needed to stay secret.

Dont worry about it to much. Although especially for warlock its a pretty big deal if you reveal if its handlock or zoo. But I don't mind, so we're good.

Just an update on my match. I've sent DreamMachine a friend request a few times since Friday already and I haven't heard from him. Going to send out a PM and hopefully he'll reply back.

mobius/Protekt1 v futurezombie/turnipknight

protekt1 3-0 turnipknight

Fun games + awesome decks to play against, brought by turnip

Funny thing is I am sure with a little research people could narrow my paladin deck down to like 27/30 cards I am running lol. But those small changes really do matter. Plus since we aren't restricted to running the same deck each set of matches, let alone each match in a set, it isn't that reliable to assume what people have :)

3 matches left for round one. One of three do have an extension, and I see JesseZao has posted so there's 3 players we haven't heard from...if you guys are going to have trouble getting your matches in let me know.

We can start round 2 anytime once we know who we're playing, correct?

I think I would have preferred sealed decklists for the tournament. Losers shouldn't have the advantage of teching their follow-up decks after gaining information about their opponent imo.

Still nothing. No idea.

We'll move you ahead tomorrow evening if he doesn't reply, I'll send him a request as well.

Correct, if you can get a game in early I would go ahead and do it. The second round is during the week so it'll be a little harder to schedule games.

100% with you, but I don't think there's a reasonable way to ensure that the decks actually remain the same, I've been trying to think of a way to do it without the honour system....Always open to suggestions though. It works well in streaming tournaments, but doesn't really fit well here.

Winners, if they still have decks left, can always switch to a different deck. I mean, it's not perfect, but it gives them some options to keep the loser guessing.

I like the option to change decks if you choose to between rounds. Your opponent has the choice to just make a complete counter deck after your first match. The chance that the winner might changes things up is a good thing imo.

The conquest format that blizzard is using for the world championship this year is neat.

Yup, I haven't watched any tournaments that have used this format, but I'm definitely intrigued as it takes away the ability for someone with a single good deck to run the table. I'd be happy to run that format here over the next round or so.

That format seems alright as well. Just to sum it up, the winning player must switch decks and the losing player can use any deck he hasn't won with yet. I think I suggested a format like this in the past rounds cause another tournament (around blizzcon last year) was using something similar.

Its a step ahead of a ban system that has been used to prevent 1 deck from being too good throughout an entire tournament.

edit:
That said, I personally don't have 3 decks that would do well in this format quite yet. Even in this tournament I am just hoping to get by on the strength of 1 deck with 2 backups in case the first deck fails.

That's pretty much it, it's pretty much the first person to win with all three of their chosen classes wins the round.

Your probably not alone with only having 1 or 2 decks that you feel can compete, but the plan is for four more rounds to this season and if you hope to make the finals possibly having one bad tournament really shouldn't hurt you

Looks like I play procarbine? I'm heading back on a flight home to Seattle today, estimated arrival is 9:30pm which means I'd probably be able to play around 11pm. Which is late if you're on east coast time; let me know if tonight is possible otherwise I'm free all of tomorrow night.

I probably have the cards to make more decks work, but in a ladder meta it is very hard to master a deck that is just bad against the current meta but would work really well in this kind of format. That is more of an issue, for me at least, than just getting the cards themselves tbh.

I just need to spend much more time mastering other decks basically. Gonna have to do that even for this tournament.

I talked to him and he said he wouldn't mind waiting. See what schedule you guys can get worked out and let me know.

Round Three is officially underway! One match remains from Round Two which looks like it'll be played tonight (Whoever wins please contact BigAT to get your next match set up as you'll need to make sure you catch up). I've scratched Judderman as he has been unresponsive, because of this JessZao gets a walk into Round Three and will go up against Mobius. Congrats on making the sweet sixteen and good luck in the next round everyone.

So I wanted to post an update, I actually contacted Blizzard to see if we could have these tournament hand out Hearthstone World Cup points, unfortunately because NeoGAF signups are required to enter into the tournament and Blizzard requires entry without any barriers (except if entree fee goes towards the payout). Oh well, could have would have been pretty awesome, worth a try.

They have a guideline for qualifying a tournament to give points. Its pretty big. http://us.battle.net/hearthstone/en...2015-hearthstone-world-championship-1-30-2015

In addition to below, you need 32-128+ players. VOD of the finals and semifinals... list is pretty big.

Player Eligibility: Events must be open to all eligible players from a published region or set of published regions. If a player is invited to participate in the tournament, all other players from the home region of the invited player must also be allowed to participate in the open signup portion of the event.
Match Formats: Tournaments must follow a pre-approved match format to be eligible for awarding points. If a tournament is planning to use a different format, please contact esportsteam@blizzard.com to verify fairness and then it may be added to this list:
Last Hero Standing
Conquest
Blind-Pick Best-of-5
Tournament Format: Tournaments must be structured with an overall format that is considered fair. If a tournament is planning to use a different format, please contact esportsteam@blizzard.com to verify fairness and then it may be added to this list:
Group play
Single-Elimination
Double-Elimination
Swiss
Round-Robin
Any combination of the above formats organized into distinct rounds
Event Sponsors: Events must not advertise, present, or contain logos or mentions of organizations that contain Pornography, Alcohol, Tobacco or Cigarettes, Firearms, Gambling websites, or any company that is detrimental to Blizzard's business (ex. hacking, gold services, account selling, key sellers). This includes all announcements, promotional material, and broadcasts.
Announcement Requirements: Event must be officially approved and announced, including designation of how many points will be awarded, at least 2 weeks prior to the first match for the event to be awarded points.
Required Reporting: The tournament organizer must submit a bracket including all Battletags and a description of any issues, including all walkovers, to esportsteam@blizzard.com prior to points being awarded.

Yup, the only thing not setup is the VoD for the finals and semi's, which we could figure out if it came down to it and we had just enough players this round, I'm sure we could get more if there were actual points on the line. Either way...lost cause now.

EDIT beaten

By the way, is the final invitational (which I guess will be at the minimum a few months away since we have 4 more rounds after this tournament) going to be streamed? Is that the intent, anyway?

I was sort of hoping that some people would choose to stream their games, but no one really has been, not sure if there's just not anyone in these tournaments who streams or if they don't want to give out their decks...

I was planning on doing a video of the finals for all of the (remaining) tournaments. It's something I haven't done before though, so there's going to be a bit of learning process to get setup, and I'm not 100% sure I will be able to pull it off. Hopefully I'll be able to do a bit of a trial run this time around.
