Destiny Red Bull codes apparently had a ton of them compromised. The legend grows.

I posted this in the old thread when the promotion first came out, but figured a this was new thread worthy in case anyone is trying to buy red bulls and get the codes.

A Destiny promotion in which players could redeem codes for various in-game benefits has been undermined by Internet scammers.

Within days of the Red Bull promotion going live, players figured out the (deplorably simple) code sequence and used it to score themselves loads of free loot.

That in itself isn’t so bad, arguably, but the problem is that codes are one-use only – so those who try to redeem codes obtained through legitimate purchases are getting errors instead. Since the redemption site went down under the pressure of players rushing to scam free stuff, it’s likely that a huge number of codes have been invalidated now.

What a mess.

That's one hell of a one two punch of poor design. How do the mtn dew® promos avoid this? Better code generation I assume?

Compromised? Weird. You'd have thought we'd hear about that here.

Fucking shitheads are ruining it for other people too. I bought a can of this kind (I always drink blue or yellow if I can) in particular to get the code for my buddy.. and didn't pay much attention when grabbing it since I was drinking the yellow version first. Grab the can from the fridge a few days later and find out some fuck had taken the tab off! Apparently the codes are printed on the back of them.

Had to figure out how to actually get it open while at work without any good tools for it and then I couldn't even give the code away since it was gone!

Interested in hearing about how they will handle/fix this. If thousands of codes were generated I assume there will be thousands of people getting used codes on their cans.

They're going to ban everyone who used a fake code, right? Kind of like when game store employees get banned from Club nintendo for stealing the codes from new games.

Make it free and enjoy the publicity that comes along with Red Bull-themed armor, emblems, dropships and enemas.

They weren't fake codes. There is absolutely no way of finding people out (at least to my knowledge) because they cant prove it wasnt from a can.

I'm not interested in specifics, but what was the general failure in the code?
It was comprised of 3 numbers and 2 letters iirc so any string of those characters could be made into a code that was x characters long. So anyone could guess a code and redeem it.

They werent fake codes, just codes guessed using a stupid system. And i've never heard of store employees getting banned for using legit codes for games they didnt buy.

Sorry Bungie and Destiny, I love the game but sounds like the ball has really been dropped ever since the Taken King was announced.

House of Wolves redeemed a lot of fans for you. But, the issues with the CE of Taken King, $20 armor shaders, and now a simple formula for Red Bull codes, it's going to be tough for you guys to dig yourself out of your current hole.

The only way I can think of that would set this right is if they somehow made each code valid only once per Destiny account, and even then any code is still valid for everyone. The promotion is fucked and they really have no way of fixing beyond "here you go everyone's code is valid for everyone" because the cans are already out there.

I hope so cuz that would be hilarious .... why would people put in multiple codes anyway? Isn't it for shaders and crap like that?

Wouldn't even waste my time scamming a free code, its worth less than the actual 5 minutes required to do it.

Wow, that's pretty scummy. They're all thieves unless I'm missing something.

It was a code that used 2 specific letters in every one and then a 6 digit combination of 3 letters. It was ridiculously simple. Their own fault.

E.G (it wasn't these letters or numbers) A code may be have AB123123 or BA123123 or 12BA1233 etc etc

I don't think that's possible without a degree of collateral damage and virtually nobody who actually bought a can would to be able to prove that they didn't just enter a random code.

They really should have given up on the idea of hiding the code under the can's tab. Only having 8 characters obviously made the keys much easier to crack but you can't fit more than 8 characters in that small little spot in the tab.
