WB tends to be happy with these DC films before release. TDK, TDKR, MoS - they all get good pre-release buzz from the studio. It's not indicative of BO success or critical acclaim.

...

But two of those are both critically and commercially successful and one is commercially successful.

I mean if you had used like Green Lantern and Jonah Hex

Fanboyisms are really strange to me, do you guys think the collective of Disney execs actually care how a movie two months removed from their next project does? If this is good and does well then it's a win for comic movies and the film industry in general. No one at marvel is losing any sleep over this.

Wow wow wow, watch out dude, you might hurt somebody's feelings.

No, that was a report (singular) that test audience reception had Warner execs nervous and "reconsidering their entire slate" with literally no other details involved.

And then people took that and ran with it. My god did they run with it.

In both directions, to be fair. That's where that "BvS might be too smart" speculation bit came from. But there were also more than a couple of people who immediately jumped on it to confirm their belief that the move and the DCEU as a whole was doooooooomed!
It's a discussion board. Speculation will go either way and the negativity is largely DC's own fault for Man of Steel. I hope that this movie absolves the franchise but I feel the apocalyptic horsemen of DCGaf have a strong enough argument.

The 'too smart' thing was good damage control though. People love movies that make them feel smart, look at Inception.

The report was that there was some nervousness that it would not be a crowd pleaser. McWeeny or whatever his name is then speculated that perhaps there would be a shakeup. Many on gaf jumped on that and ran with it.

Movies are made to turn a profit. Crappy movies that do well get sequels (Pirates of the Caribbean shows us that) so the notion of movies being canceled would mean that it was a financial failure. FF1 bombing led to FF2 disappearing from future plans, for example. Amazing Spider Man 1 sucking, but doing well financially did not prevent ASM2 from happening.
I really don't see how this isn't fair. There'll be a lot of crow to eat when this movie releases as I see 0% chance it's Man of Steel bad but I just don't like this air of people being excited for this movie whining about people being soothsayers, it happens to every film here regardless of Marvel, DC, etc... lots of people hate both franchises or only one. It's hard to tell.

The "hate" for Man of Steel is largely fabricated though. Yes it was divisive but only amongst professional critics. The general public liked it. Not as much as Avengers but it wasn't hated. That's not to say it was perfect or that everybody loved it but the evidence that Man of Steel "sucked" and the DCEU is "doomed" simply isn't there. It's like a story passed along where the original telling is warped so much it's no longer the same story.

Is it weird that I feel like Man of Steel is 7/10 and quite enjoy it...yet at the same time love All Star Superman and feel something like the Reagan scene epitomizes why I love Superman?

Anyhoo I'll be interested to see how this tracks, just out of curiosity, hope no WB suits do something silly and knock down parts of the rest of the universe...although I'm not sure you can tell an interesting solo Cyborg story but o well. If it's good I'll definetley see it again at the BFI IMAX.

Okay, this is a bit odd. I never said it was doomed but a movie being bad and then s sequel by the same people isn't going to gain lots of random support. Also, I only know of about one friend who likes that movie, everyone else who I know disliked it. I also stated that I think this will be leagues better.

Damage control from who? Batman-on-Film?
How was the too smart thing damage control?
What do you mean 'who'? Reports said it was an executive. It was a way to sate DC fans by saying 'it's fine, they just don't get it'.

lol I'm sold. Movie must be disliked by the general audience if you only have one friend who likes it. Pack it up guys. MoS was trash.

Nobody ruins my family vacation but me...and maybe the boy!
If my prediction of this movie being garbage comes true, I can see the ticket sales tanking after OW.

If it defies my prediction and is a pretty decent movie(70% or higher on RT) I can see it pushing(but probably not breaking) some records.

There's a game children like to play called Telephone... this is the internet version of that.

Since it's a report from a website reporting on a report from a website which is reporting on what they heard.

The final source added the "Too smart" business.

not the original source nor the Warner executive

I think it will do better than SW globally, and almost domestically.

As a fan of superhero movies in general and DC characters I would love it if this were to happen, but it seems very optimistic. If it reaches 1.4 billion that would be a major success and still well behind SW worldwide. Even Jurrasic World at 1.67 billion seems like it would be difficult to reach.
Superman and Batman movies have skewed fairly heavily to the US in the past as well, so for it to reach say 1.5 billion it would likely need to earn at least 700 million in the US.

I could see it outgrossing Star Wars in foreign markets but no way will the total hit $2B.

I can't. The Force Awakens made $1.12B overseas. The best all time showing for a comic flick is around $940M by Age of Ultron. DC's best was $640M by TDKR.

You should write down all our names and posts and serve crow like that one fellow did for Ant-Man.

There's no need to even do that much work, just open any bvs related thread on this forum in the past 3 years and choke on the astonishing idiocy on display on every single page.

not surprised at all.

this movie was always going to be huge. its Batman and Superman for the first time ever in the same movie. that concept alone is gonna sell tickets.

oh, and it also happens to look freakin awesome.

Like Penguin said, that's not what happened. There was a report, as in, singular, that Warner execs were worried about BvS's reception (and some saying the opposite, but that's neither here nor there). From there, some speculated that it was because BvS was somehow unusual wrt people's expectations for superhero movies as established by Marvel's work since IM1. And finally, only after that did somebody add on the "too smart for audiences" thing.

Which people immediately took as an insult from WB.

Well you sure went out on a limb there.

Superman 1 and Batman 89 were both WB's most successful movies ever for their time.

It makes sense they'd make money together

This is a film I'm definitely waiting on reviews and word of mouth before I'd see it at the cinema.

Based on the trailers, Man of Steel and Zack Snyder's output in general, I'm expecting a stinker. It might surprise and be turn out to be a decent film. If not, I can wait until it's on TV.

Here in SoCal, there seems to be significantly less ticket buying at the IMAX theaters I frequent. I remember when Star Wars came on sale, all of the middle portions of all IMAX screens were sold out that weekend.

For BVS, the best seats in the house are available at almost all IMAX showings that I checked, including the one and only 70mm real IMAX location.

I live in SoCal too, just to make sure which is the 70mm real Imax location? Irvine right?

I think the type of person who becomes a Disney exec is a hyper-competitive quasi-sociopathic cyborg. Like, these are the guys the dicks who run ESPN aspire to being to promoted to. I bet that shit burns their soul.

About quitters, are you guys getting people who quit before they're about to lose? Yesterday I had 2 guys quit during odd times. One guy quit right after I won the 2nd round. The other guy quit as he was getting pounded in the 1st round. And just a moment ago I had a guy quit during the start up screen. Honestly though I'd rather he bail before the match starts then waste my time with a match that he was going to quit anyways. Going on with the match and seeing that you're out matched and then bailing is a different story though.

I assume this is about Street Fighter V. Came close with that "V" in the thread title. =P

I'm just reading this thread trying to understand the fish reference in the title and this post has me wtf.

fake edit: ah, SFV.
