Millsap for 3 at the end of 3.

Everyone talks about how people don't want Memphis in the playoffs, i'm pretty sure Memphis wouldn't want Utah.

Other countries pay their athletes to join the Olympics.. So really all this do for free stuff is silly

Do they? I honestly don't know.

But look at the dream team. Every interview i read from one of those guys about Barcelona is that it was a great time, and it never sounds like "work".

I mean really you get a free trip to London, free tickets to all these different events, free food, lodging, all this other free crap. And you want money off jersey sales? They should put that money into the special olympics or some charity.

It's not like your representing Dwyane Wade in the olympics. Your representing your nation. And if you want to get paid for that, there's plenty of people who would be more than happy to take your place. Insurance, fine i can see you don't want to get screwed over.

But come on. Also Prototype 2 johnny cash commercial? What the hell?

Yeah like Ninja said if you don't want them to be paid then we should start sending amateurs

They get paid for what they do in the NBA. Outside of that they don't have a single damn obligation anywhere else except to the ballclub they're under contract with. Sure it's an honor to represent your country and we all wish we could but I'm not gonna blame them for wanting to get away from basketball after it's consumed their life for basically 3/4 of the year

Dude, you cannot keep talking like "you get this free you get that for free BE GRATEFUL". YOU would love to have what they have; they don't need it. if players had to pay their own airfare and food, good luck finding a team

and yeah in the dream team era it wasn't any work. they could have played hung over and won by 50. now the team actually has to try with the extra competition.

I dont' have a problem with Olympians being compensated. The Olympics is big business, why not give some of that money to those responsible for bringing it in? If people want to get all outraged and pretend that the Olympics are all about the purity and sanctity of the sport, then lets start sending the amateurs and college players and don't' cry when Spain kicks our ass again.

Guys like Bird, Magic, Jordan, etc. were getting like 1/10th the NBA pay that all these other chumps who've been playing in the Olympics this past decade are getting. I don't remember ever hearing them asking for any sort of compensation for being given the opportunity to represent their country in arguably the world's greatest event. Just playing in whatever country is hosting that particular year already boosts their image and gives them publicity to bring in more non-salary profit. Players just rather chill over the summer nowadays.

I'm not gonna blame them for wanting to get away from basketball after it's consumed their life for basically 3/4 of the year

And they get to retire before they're 40 most of the time.

Oh, the horror.

yes they do..

And yeah, the hours of practice, interviews and promo shoots are hours and hours of work..

Nike getting paid...why not Wade or whoever?

Oh, the horror.

That was 20 years ago, things change. Old time ball players sat back and let owners bend them over pre-Free Agency, but that didn't make it right. I don't have a problem with them bringing it up, is all. The Olympics aren't just about pride and nationalism.

Even still that's just a bit nasty, no matter if someone asked or not. It's not enough to represent you want to get paid as well. Hell that's basically a free vacation. They don't pay for the flights, lodging, or meal right?

So basically, someone puts in a small investment to make more money?

i agree that athletes should get paid, somebody does make a lot of money on the Olympics and athletes are supposed to work for free? it's not like they ask for money that gets donated otherwise. olympics are a business.

Does Nike get jersey sales? I would assume that money goes to USA basketball.

And really how many hours of practice are we talking about here?

who cares what dudes did in the 90s? in any profession you can find a case of "oh we did it the hard way back then look at these sissies now" and lol, let's not pretend like Jordan wasn't thinking to himself "I should be getting paid for this shit" while he was doing it

players would rather chill over the summer? oh how dare they

and yes they get to retire earlier, but let's not act like just because they make millions that they should be obligated to do anything (besides charity), but doing the olympics isn't a breeze. they gotta put in a lot of them and if players would rather go market themselves or do whatever I'm not gonna think of them any worse

and I'm pretty sure LeBron is thinking the same thing, he just wouldn't say it

This argument of them earning a big pay check and therefore should bite the proverbial bullet is funny. There's this saying that companies are not people, but they sure as heck are treated better.

Well if you count the two years before the actually Olympics...

And yes, Team USA jerseys are getting NIKE money.. You really think NIKE is doing it for free? lol

The fact that they're playing organized basketball after coming out of a hectic nba schedule is an issue in itself....

How many people would ply their trade for free? Would a plumber? Would a carpenter? I don't know why we'd expect people who's skill is a sport to feel any differently. Yeah, it's one thing to do charity events, but plenty of players play in charity games and fundraisers. The Olympics is NOT charity. Everyone else makes money off of it EXCEPT the athletes. It's like the NCAA.

come on Utah. Take down the Grizz!

NBA TV needs to show this ending...

Like I said, that's closer to charity work. The Olympics are not charity. They are a competitive sporting event. If we want to preserve the sanctity of the event, then don't send these PROFESSIONALS and send the college kids again.

they can say "no." It's totally up to them. No one forces them to do shit.

If you want to be paid, then go sit at home. Don't accept then whine.

poor Nike needs NBA players to do charity work for them..

Worst example ever
"How many people would ply their trade for free?"

Was referring to that.

.

Of course they can, my problem is that most people are trying to villianize them just for asking. I don't see anything wrong with Olympic athletes asking to be paid.

I assumed Nike was getting a cut. How is USA basketball not getting a portion of that?

I can see how you guys have a point but I'm not buying this "it's a business they should split up the money". Athletes also get great exposure to the world in the olympics and that itself fuels sales for their own jerseys and worth.

In a perfect world that money should be put back into the olympic programs and not go straight to nike if that is the case.

Call me old school but they already get all this free stuff and have a chance to represent their country and win a gold medal. Who cares about the money? Your enshrined in history brah.

That is their trade.. People are making hundreds of millions of dollars off of Team USA hoops and they are giving it away for free.

No cared nearly as much when it was kids paying.. Once it became pros hoops became a cash cow for the Olympics.. So yeah plying their trade for free while others are profiting from it

so lets not give these guys money they already have so much and instead give it to corporations and ceos who have even more?

Speak your mind, just don't get upset when people aren't sympathetic to someone making $15 mil a year to play basketball whining about not being paid for a few games in the Olympics.

Of course they can, my problem is that most people are trying to villianize them just for asking. I don't see anything wrong with Olympic athletes asking to be paid.

My problem was it seemed like they were asking for only NBA players to be paid, not all athletes.

Plus, it ignores the reality of the olympics. It's a non-profit organization. All of its funds are used to pay for all the other things it does, including the para-olympics. So yeah, he is going to be villianized being a millionaire asking to take money away from things like that because those few extra games are so bad.

never mind that the season isn't even a full 365 days like pretty much everyone else.

Millionaires whining about money will always look bad. Athletes, Wall Street, Politicians. Always.

FUCK YOU MAYO.

Let the players get a little check.. I doubt players would say anything if they got a little money for the time they put into trying to get gold

What profit? The US Olympic Committee (or whatever the official name is) is non-profit. It cannot make millions of dollars off them. All that money goes back into the program to fund everything, including the players meals, flights, hotels, etc.

All medal winners get money. $25k for the gold. But that's via the IOC.

NIKE, Coke, and whoever else is making gear for the Olympics is 100% making money

NIKE, Coke, and whoever else is making gear for the Olympics is 100% making money

So? They are third parties. They pay for the license so the USOC can fund their shit.

Guess what, players don't get any of the Arena naming rights money in the NBA, either. And a whole host of other shit.

If the USOC has to pay these players, they have to pay everyone, and they'd be taking money away from somewhere. Let's cut the special olympics so the crybaby millionaire nba players can make some extra cash.

Actually I'm pretty sure if you set up an international plumbing competition where you can win a gold medal, travel somewhere exotic, and watch all the other construction industry competitions for free, plumbers would be all over that.
