The Necromancer is only briefly mentioned in the Hobbit but what Gandalf was up to during that time was expanded on a bit in the Lord of the Rings and I guess even more in the appendices.

I remember downloading this trailer 12.5 years ago on a 28k dialup connection. The first glimpse at Middle Earth. Oh the memories.

Woah, just saw the article reporting 48fps versions will be limited release. That's a shame, but I understand the concern. Guess I'll have to hunt down a theater now. Wonder if they'll attach a "48fps experience" to them, similar to 3D, or if it will be like Digital/Real Imax where you have to do your research.

Ha, sorry, I guess it could be worse but look on the bright side you won't be tempted to drive a ridiculous distance to watch a movie.

Where I live, I just happen to be between 3 and 4 hours from New York City, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington DC. I would imagine one of those cities will have a theater or 2 showing the movie at 48fps but a 6-7 hour round trip is a hard pill to swallow.

heh, you're right. And yes, such a trip isn't very nice but it may be worth it. I wouldn't go for it, anyway, not unless I could spend more time in the city than just going to watch a movie and then return.

You know, I was cut off from cable and the internet when the first trailers were going up for LOTR/FotR. I never saw any posted here, but I did see this one on a new release VHS we rented:

1:12 was when I had some severe geek thrillgasms. I remember being happy that Boromir had his horn and especially his shield for some reason.

wasn't there apprehension when the fellowship of the ring was in production? seems to be the same with the hobbit. indeed, i admit that i'm still sceptical about some of the casting p.jackson has chosen but i have a feeling it will all turn out well.

Jackson said this month. Most people are assuming the 21st September which is the 75th anniversary of The Hobbit's publication.

Keep an eye on that film trailer classification site. If it's classified on there, then the trailer will be released a week or so after.

I think Peter, Fran and Philippa realise that they didn't do justice to the character of Sauron in the LOTR trilogy and are wanting to put that right in The Hobbit trilogy. Whether they overdo it and saturate the character, well, we'll know soon enough.

There are giant spiders, wolves, trolls, stone giants, goblins of all shapes and sizes, Gollum, a magnificent dragon, a shape shifting bear, talking eagles and birds, and a ghostly sorcerer known as The Necromancer and his cohort of creatures that may include zombie orcs, werewolves, giant bats and creatures known as Wights.

In terms of battles, the big one is known as The Battle of the Five Armies. Elves, men, dwarves, goblins and wargs. Other smaller battles/confrontations involving

Wizards and the sorcerer and even our friendly neighborhood dragon.

The Hobbit is a grand adventure in its own right and is not to be overshadowed by The Lord of the Rings.

Supposedly it's a speaking role, so they're expanding the character quite a bit. Edmond Dantes, correct me if I'm wrong, but Sauron only has dialogue one time, in the Beren and Luthien story.

Thought this might be interesting- footage from LOTR which was left on the cutting room floor, including Sauron fighting at the Black Gate, Eoywn fighting in the Glittering Caves, Goblins attacking Lothlorien, and Frodo becoming a Gollum like creature.

Having seen plenty of stills (especially in Games Workshops books) it was interesting to see some of the scenes in motion. I'm glad PJ restrained himself with many of these!

He also has dialogue in the Akallabêth, in fact it's his most prominent role in all of Tolkien's legendarium. You get a strong sense of his character in that story.
