What is especially hilarious (especially in the context of Tedesco's earlier posts on this page) is that the intro sequence with David seems almost identical to the original introduction to Bishop and the Sulaco that Cameron had planned for Aliens. ZOMG RIDLEY OWES THE ONLY GOOD PART OF HIS MOVIE TO CAMERON LOLOLOL
This is where you are wrong because from a sci-fi film the thing I want the most is a believable, fantastical and intriguing world that sets up just enough answers to feel coherent and yet leaves many things unanswered. I don't give a rats ass about most characters in even the most praised sci-fi films. I loved Prometheus because it offered everything I wanted and left out all the excess fat from the characters and their relationships, which to me are almost always filler in sci-fi.
Prometheus had the most interesting creatures and mysteries of all sci-fi cinema since god knows when. A few thin characterizations and loose ends don't change that.
If I want cheesy coming of age/love stories, I crack out Disney movies.

And yet you liked Prometheus?
The vistas, creatures, horrible mutations/abortions/breaking of bones, a grand theme of space exploration and awesome were all there. Mysteries, believable and menacing humanoids with cool biotech with testicle user interfaces. A flute that operates a ship. An android, that encompasses all nerd fantasies about how they should be presented...
Too bad you were sleeping through it.

I wasn't even being facetious in my last post. I'm genuinely happy that you got to see the movie I was hoping for. I didn't make this thread to hate on the movie. I even went back for a second viewing just in case it was hype on my part. There were hints at the movie I wanted, but it just wasn't there for me.

It's all good, I can't wait for the bluray and whether the movie withstands a second viewing.

I imagine there would have been some applause in screenings if the Vicker's line "these idiots are about to infect my ship" was kept in. Go Vicker's! Incinerate the lot of them!

I think you have your dumb scientists confused. Millburn (the biologist) wasn't terrified of anything living on the planet, that was Fifield. Milburn was actually interested in the dead engineers and was examining them. Fifield (coordinates guy, geologist) was the one terrified of anything, and asked Milburn to leave together.
Guy was scared, probably made a mistake and got lost. It's his first time mapping an alien structure. I can cut him some slack.
I'm not saying these aren't valid criticisms, but you can look at most grand sci-fi movies and find just as many fallacies, if not more.
I enjoyed the movie a lot. Not because I forgave the plot points you mentioned, but because what there was to like (beautiful photography, great set pieces, some great performances), outweighed all that. I'm sorry you couldn't get past what I perceived as minor quibbles in the scheme of things and enjoy the ride, but many people did.
Likewise. I actually enjoyed the movie a lot. SURE, it was far from perfect but I personally preferred the style of Prometheus over something like say, Avator. The acting was also far superior.
If you can stand 720p, iTunes will have it on sale next week.

I think the couple dynamic really ruined the movie. They were just so annoying, all lovey dovey both being so optimistic. This is a alien planet with alien beings and they act so casual with it all. Everyone else sort of falls in line with them too early on in the movie. So many dumb decisions...... I loooved the CGI and alien elements. Still trying to decide if that makes it worth picking up on blu ray. I'd more like to see making of docs than the actual movie.
Nope. It's Fox, so I'm not surprised.

Seriously. Even David's "How far would you go to get your answers? What would you be willing to do?" line/music in the trailer is haunting. In the movie, it's ruined by that horrible fucking main theme.

No. There was concrete proof that chests were indeed burst long before the crew went into the building AND the freakin mural of the xenomorph...
It's probably best to go see the movie and not even worry about that. Try not to think about it.
I can't seem to remember. Damn it. I guess I have to re watch the movie.
There was a mural to the alien in the cave, and the dead space jockeys all had exit-wound chests
And of course Prometheus is better than Carter, Carter is a donkey.
It was amazing to read pages and pages of people missing these scenes/remembering the mural and somehow trying to wiggle out of it.

And I'm one of them. I don't deny that Prometheus has fundamental flaws, but for me they almost disappear against the film's remarkable strengths. I noticed a fair number of discrepancies and off-notes in my initial viewing, but none of them pulled me out of the experience. Prometheus is an engaging film that mostly satisfied (and in some aspects exceeded) my personal expectations. I was not disappointed, and I've now grown rather bored of hearing that, if not in so many words, every sensible person should have been.

Just saw the movie. Big fan of Alien and Aliens, also fan of Ridley Scott, been on a media blackout before and haven't read any of the reactions online.
Fairly shocked that the reception seems pretty negative from many people in here, although I do agree with some of the criticisms - particularly the lack of reactions and and reflection upon events - I feel a director's cut running 10-15 minutes longer to give the characters some space to breathe, grow and react in the story would be ideal.
That said, I think it's still a pretty great science fiction movie, the first 50 minutes or so are pure hair-raising atmosphere, brilliant stuff. Mentions of John Carter and Avatar in here are either trollbait or just outright stupidity on display, they're universes apart.

Yeah, maybe. Feelings about the movie are certainly not set in stone, especially before I've seen any of the behind the scene extra stuff on Blu-Ray. I think it's important to record or at least remember your initial reflection on a piece of media, helps to put things into perspective later.

I know, its crazy how much better both of those movies are compared to Prometheus.

On a serious note, though, both your and Sculli's reactions are valid. The concept was great, the atmosphere was great, but yeah, there was some pretty stupid shit in there too.
Avatar had similar pros and cons.

100% agreed, and I actually don't like the very last scene for that reason. I think the allusions and references throughout the movie were clear enough. Felt unnecessary.

I've reflected plenty on this film and think the hate is over the top.
Disappointing for sure, and not a whole lot of sense to be found, but the scenery was great, David was awesome and there are some memorable scenes. Phantom Menace it aint.

I just saw the movie last night. I probably need to see it again but I can honestly say it's a great movie with tons of atmosphere and a perfect level of creepiness, mystery and action. I can't even imagine where they're going in the sequel. I'm hyped already.
I can also see what people are complaining about in the writing. I can't recall anything in detail but I remember noticing a few things that put me off. Next time I watch it I'll pay more attention. No where near deserving the level of hate it gets here though.

Saw it last night. It was entertaining I guess but just felt so stupid. Character motivations are non-existent or make no sense, nearly every character acts stupid in order to advance the plot, and the dialogue is often clunky or generic. Given how great the visuals are, it's disappointing that everything else felt so generic.
Fassbender is the only noteworthy thing about the film to me, outside of the visuals. The characters are bland and feel like they were plucked out of a science fiction 101 pot; most are not developed or even given a memorable scene to semi-remember them by, so when folks start dying I felt a constant "who...? meh" reaction.
Some have complained about the lack of things being answered, but I found myself not caring. There's a difference between unanswered questions and plot holes imo

Saw it last night. Some things were really impressive, looked amazing and had great atmosphere. Many other things were done poorly, did not look good, and did not make any sense. There was all the components to tell a gripping story here but it didn't happen.
Ridley needed to work on the story a lot more and there were some scenes that were shot poorly. The result is a very uneven film and a waste of potential.
