Strider (Capcom/Double Helix, PC/PS4/XB1/PS360, 2014) [Open World, Orig Devs, Video]

Given Double Helix's track record, I'm a bit skeptical of the quality of this release.

Hope it doesn't turn into Remember Me, where people were so convinced to play devil's advocate against obvious facts that they bought the game against their better judgment. Best to analyze properly.

Who's these "lots"? Paid reporters and some handful of bias
paid
gamers who can't really say something bad about the game?
No, I'll wait until legit players give honest feedback about the game. The same thing happened with COD:Declassified with the Vita and we all seen how that went. Honest, feedback

Lol. So now all the good impressions are from "paid gamers"? You're trying way too hard here.

A lot of people also said SFxT was the greatest game ever, and we know how that turned out

I didn't realize the people behind SFxT were making KI.

Unlike NT, DH has acknowledged their crap. So they know what their weaknesses are and hopefully how to address them.

They'll also most likely come to this with respect to the franchise they are working on, unlike NT who didn't give a flying fuck about DMC, the characters or even the fanbase.

This should be a great announcement and something that people should be happy about, but you guys are more interested in discussing the semantics of whether DH is a good enough studio or if this game, which seems to have more going for it than the previous titles, is already doomed.

I don't get it. Should we simply celebrate that there's a new Strider game coming, regardless of how it seems? Why?

I'm not saying you can't be skeptical, by all means do so; I just think it's bullshit you guys are trying to tear it down before it can even prove itself. That, is an extreme reaction and it's unfair.

I can see how frustrating it must be for Capcom and DH folk who worked to get this out, and have you guys jump down their throats the moment you get it.

Who's fault is that for their reputation?

Why the fuck is it zoomed in so much. Also i dislike how they have pres X to do so and s o forth when they just gave you the skill. The amount of over explaining in modern games is a turn off.

We can only judge what we know. What we know is that DH has made a lot of shitty games. What we know is the gameplay design shows bullet sponge Strider fighting through bland environments with incredibly weak sound design and far too zoomed in camera so you can't even see the enemies in front of you before you get lit up.

It's frustrating for me as a fan of Strider 2 who wanted a sequel for the longest, and for it come out looking like a a kinda boring/flashy castleroid. Shit works both ways.

The game visually looks alright but..I dunno, from a gameplay standpoint, it seems very mediocre. Maybe it's just cuz it's a demo but most of the stage, the player just runs straight through enemies, not even bothering to avoid bullets. What's the point? I don't get it.

While it may end up being just like that in the final game, the gameplay we saw had godmode on, notice how his life never drops below 40, even when he's at 40 and still being hit, in that case why would he bother dodging stuff? The boss should have killed him if not for god mode, so I assume they didn't want to die during the presentation, which could mean the game is kinda hard which is good.

Again, it may end up being just like that, but we can't say for sure based on footage with god mode on.

Wow this looks really great!! I never thought I'd see this game come back. Strider 2 was a visual feast back in the day, but the gameplay was a bit shallow. Let's hope the metroidvania style gives the game some added depth.

Something bugs me about the art style, like it's an iOS clone of another game or something. Just looks and feels kind of cheap.

I got it too.

Confused how people are saying Double Helix is good now look at how nice their UNRELEASED GAME Killer Instinct LOOKS and being completely serious.

Hey come on let's be fair! If we just forget about everything they've ever made up until now, they're a perfectly trustworthy developer!

Yeah it's not like they built a completely new team to work on it, have been letting people play at nearly every trade show for themselves and getting mostly positive feedback on it. Nah can't be that.

Honestly? It looks like strider. It was always basic as hell.

I think the problem here is MVC has raised your expectations on how a strider game should look like.

point is people praise anything everytime, doesnt exactly mean anything, and i'm actually looking forward to this, doesnt mean i have to instantly praise it or not be cautious about it

Not sure what kind of vanilla ass ports you've been playing, but Strider was a sight to behold. A goddamned sprite filled wonderland of intricate detail.

Strider 2 was no slouch either. Sure, LOL PSX 3D environments, but what was there looked pretty damned good. And it brought the Playstation to its knees over and over again. Shit moving and scaling all over the place. It was one of the best looking 2.5D action platformers for its time.

Strider!

While I'm glad to see another Strider game, I'm skeptical because of Double Helix developing for it, & not Capcom themselves.

Hopefully, it'll turn out to be good.

I believe he's talking about gameplay mechanics.

EDIT: Or maybe not

Osman is very good, but hard as hell. It devours quarters like crazy.

Especially on the last level, where it suddenly changes up the continue rules and you no longer respawn where you die, and instead have to start over from the beginning of the section you're in.

Great game otherwise, though.

Well I am completely excited for this one! I was hoping it would be more of a Metroidvania than a traditional level-by-level romp so until I have reason to think otherwise I am PUMPED!!!

Just reminds me of SFxT where I thought I was the crazy one saying how the game looks bleh and everyone was praising it and hyping it pre-release. Then the game came out, the new game smell wore off and people were disappointed.

I would like to be wrong since that means another good fighter in the sea getting play.

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
A side scrolling 2.5 Metroidvania Strider!?

Is this the real life!?

Best Capcom game of the decade so far.... confirmed(?)

They're both definitely as basic as it gets as far as gameplay. Strider 2 is literally press attack as fast as you can to win.

Should have been arc sys devloping. Not-contra hardcorps upraising proved they could do 2d action games good. I think they would have been a better choice for strider than double helix

I don't like bullet sponge Strider game design, that seems completely at odds with the arcade origins it's based on where you're suppose to be dodging and evading thanks to you ninja like agility. I don't like the music at all. I don't like the tiny shitty little sound effect the cypher makes now. Visually, it's just kinda bland; Strider 2 3D objects didn't age that well, but it had fantastic 2D sprites at least, this is just...whatever. Energy scarf...I like that they making it a UI design thing, but it's so small and insignificant now, which used to be a big part of his character.

But uh, he moves and slashes and slides like Strider. There is that.

I don't know. Approach with caution on this shit, that's as best I can do.

this, dude was straight running into bullets with impunity in the gameplay vid.

The trailer was ace, but I'm not sold on the gameplay vid.

It's awesome to see Strider is back because I like the character, but I'm sad to see it won't be anything like previous games. The original Strider is such a triumph because it felt like the developers imagined the most exciting action scenes possible and strung them together. It was the type of game where tons of work was put into something the player would only experience for a few seconds in a very specific way; a tightly choreographed and exciting game that was meant to be played over and over.

While watching the game footage for the new Strider, I did not see anything bad about the game and it looks fun to play, but-- being a Metroidvania-- it won't have that tightly directed feel of the original. I know it's pretty much impossible to make a 30-45 minute action game that takes weeks to beat in our contemporary game culture but I would have been really excited to see that. I'm looking forward to this game for other reasons; not as a game that picks up where the originals left off, but as a decent game featuring a character I like.

On second thought, some of the comments here are on the money. The game doesn't seem to evoke that sense of thrill that Strider 2 had. The colours are also too washed out. I ran Strider 2 through the epsxe emulator and I'd have to say this new Strider doesn't seem to have that same visual flair and use of colours the old one had. Hiryu still has very stylish animations, but there is something missing. Sorry for the bad filters on the sprites, but you get the idea.

Aw, and here I was expecting the glorious return of Osman.
I can't say I liked the look of Strider 2 at all. This new Strider is more Strider 2 to me.

Just play Cannon Dancer, spiritual sequel of Strider, developed by one of original Strider devs. It's fantastic. So much better than Strider 2.
Moon Diver(PS360) is also made by same dude. It looks Strider-ish, but I dunno if it was good or not.

Did anyone ever play Cannon-Dancer / Osman? Same director and many staff from the team that made Strider. Very cool and rather bonkers unnoficial follow-up.

Who comes up with this stuff

That game world is a bunch of random ass shit thrown together to make something that looks very unique and interesting although very weird

I love it

Felt like someone was on acid when they came up with that opening cinematic

This is the price you pay for open worlds.... The spectacle of the scripted scenario like the original arcade game is lost.
I love metroid and exploring but I'm not sold on the idea of making Hiryu an explorer from the trailers just yet.

Need more P* like action in my Strider
