July 2010 NPD Article (Gamasutra)

jvm

Gamasutra.
This weekend I wrote up some comments on the July 2010 sales results based on the latest NPD Group data release. As usual, Gamasutra is hosting the article:

Some stuff folks might be interested in:
  • Second discussion about Xbox 360 sales in as many months. By my estimate 60% of Xbox 360 sales in July were the new S model.
  • Some light comments on Wii and NDS hardware/software YTD standings. I believe the NDS is doing better than the industry average for software sales, YTD.
  • Approximate SKU breakdown for July hardware sales. See below.
  • Some stuff on NCAA sales.

As always, I'm up for corrections, comments, etc. Please don't take a lack of immediate response personally -- I may simply not be here. My overlordseditors will probably be watching the thread, so changes may happen without a direct response from me.

I had other things I wanted to write about, but this got rather long. Sorry. :(

In case you'd like to review previous threads:
2007: Oct Nov Dec
2008: Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
2009: Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
2010: Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun

Nice, as always.
Though, is there a way to know sales of 360 'S models', to every other model?
After all; all other SKUs of the 360 were discounted $50 in all stores when the 'S' was released, and a few more a few weeks later. So the average price, by the end of June and through July; was different than to previous months.

So....I wonder if NCAA Football 12 will have a PS2 version?
First month PS2 this year was below first month PSP for last year. I'd say NCAA Football 12 will not be on PS2, but I could be wrong.

Looking at this data, a $399 PS3 MOVE bundle is a mistake. They could have pulled off a $349 bundle though.

$250 PS3/$350 Move Bundle would be a nice holiday price. But yeah, that Move bundle isn't very good at all.

Although I guarantee you that they will have an awesome Black Friday bundle. Something like 120GB/250GB PS3 (which they're trying to clear) + MOVE for $299.

Yeah it will be tough to see that $399 price tag out there, They need to either do a price drop on their 120 model to compete more closely with the $199- XBox 360, or offer a better bundle price, they can't always just go by the thinking that their product is better, therefore should be more expensive... that's dogged them this entire gen.

Yeah, Sony's going to end their streak of YOY increases come September... Not that it's entirely unexpected given that was the first full month of Slim availability, but yeah, it ends there... It's not entirely relevant because sales are still pretty freaking awesome, but they're going to have less to harp about come NPD Press releases...

re:Move bundle pricing - I don't get the pricing of it either... They would get a ton of more mileage of a 350 bundle, but they decided to not go that route, for whatever reason...

They've already lost billions this gen, it's time to make some of that back.

Reading this, I'm still surprised that Nintendo is aiming to replace the DS. Perhaps the situation is different enough in Japan to warrant concern, but so far the DS is one of few (if not the only) system to have actually had its price increase over its lifetime, and its software sales, while down, are still close enough to the industry average that they shouldn't be a concern. I think a price drop across all models (even if it is a little early for the XL) would do just as well to increase system sales. A $100 DS lite isn't unreasonable this late in the system's lifetime.

As for the 360, I agree with the first comment to the actual article; the 360's sales were very much a result of the launch of the S and the discontinuing of older models. It's a nice win, but I expect a return to normality next month.

Oh man, reading this thread made me realize that my PS3 slim is going to be 1 year old next week. And my warranty will be up too :( I can't believe it's been a year already.
