Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, out now for iOS (w/ controller & online multiplayer)

Okay, so I finally got around to do my first quest (3 Burango):

  • Interface looks super crisp, way better than on 3DS (surprise surprise)
  • Game looks pretty good, it has been quite some time but I'd say more than a tad better than PSP
  • Framerate feels like a solid 30 to me, I don't know if there is a way to measure this on iOS devices, will look around
  • Touch controls were okay, camera reminded me a bit of my first time with MH3G on the 3DS
  • No official way to import PSP saves, but you have the same "Import char from MHP2Gi save" setting we know from the PSP titles
  • Game download was ~700mb, unpacked on iOS ~1GB

I recorded some footage on-device with Display recorder, will see if I can upload it for you :)

Try hooking up a bluetooth gamepad and break down the options

It looks like you can restore to a more traditional HUD (without the touch overlay) in some of the screens

Can you confirm?

Hm.

Upon further inspection, the controls for sliding the attack left, right, up and down seem clunky as hell.

I'll keep playing on my 3DS, cheers.

It supports Gamepads bro

I nice consideration for bringing games like this to Mobile and setting a nice Precedent

2+2=5

The Amiga Brotherhood
I don't care if MH is on the PSP, 3DS, VITA, WII U or PS4.
I'm happy as long as its on a dedicated gaming system.

Like it or not(i don't like it) some developers consider mobile devices dedicated game systems, and since Capcom is into mobile it was only a matter of time.
Anyway i don't care if an old game comes to mobile, you just have to consider it inevitable with certain developers, i just want developers to use most of their resources to make console/handheld games, obviously i can only get angry when this doesn't happen like with Square making Agito for mobile instead of porting Type 0 on Vita...

Yes, once a controller is connected the touch overlay disappears. You can also completly disable the target camera or choose one of two types (I guess one will be full lock-on as in the trailer, the other one will be single lock-on like 3DS). As per the PSP version, you can invert axis, change bowgun zoom mode etc and also disable map and cockpit.

This is amazing to hear. Capcom did a great job with this port.

Nice blog post, I will make sure to read
the google translated version
later, thanks!

I will look into it, currently trying to get a PSP save working. They actually have the exact same file size, so it might be possible.

Thats nuts!

Is it just running a PSP emulator or what lol

App seems to already contain all quests translated to english, german, french etc., haha. So maybe they really plan on releasing it here.

Also, a folder called "localize" that contains translated UI:

Rendered cutscenes are 480x272 or even 480x362 (4:3) tho, so probably not redone for the iOS version.

Well there it is

I would take that as pretty much a confirmation. I wonder if there is a way to change the game to english somehow since the files are stored locally

It wouldn't be called Portable 4th, since 4 is already portable

It'd probably be called MH4G 2nd or whatever ridiculous Capcom title they think of.

Nah it'll definitely be called Portable 4th, the name has already established it's self with the spin off series so people know what to expect from it. Plus it differentiates it's self from the mainline series which I'm sure Capcom will keep on 3DS or the next big console.

Language patch shouldn't pose too much of a problem, even tho they didn't include translations except for the quests and the image UI, I managed to include some official translations from Freedom Unite :)

This is amazing. Will buy 12 times when it comes out in the US.

Bring all the others too!

Excuse me, thread whiners, while I continue playing KOTOR on iPad.

I know some dude who plays League of Legends with a trackpad. After seeing that, I'm sure Monster Hunter with a touch screen is doable.

Why on earth do they keep piling on the releases for Japan only? At least bring it worldwide. The Japanese audience is already spoiled enough with MH games. And, to boot, rather than releasing for vita, they release for iOS.. in Japan ONLY. Wtf?

It's already playable on the Vita. . .in English. . .right now. . .

Why the hell doesn't this say 'japan only' in the thread title. I think I'm actually a little upset about that. Got my hopes up.
The title being not Freedom Unite should give it away, no?

Hope this bombs, need to focus on 5 on the 3ds/wii U
It won't.
It's currently the best selling app in Japan.
MH ports are the new FF ports.

The one exception seems to be SEGA, with PSO2es releasing first on Android and the iOS version still under development.
SE also released FFVI on Android first, as well as Pictlogica.

Sweet, thanks for digging it up.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch

MH 3 Ultimate has been released in the west, and MH4 Ultimate has been confirmed for a west release early next year.

Give them some time, they might bring this game to the west too.

First webm, decided to show a bit of the auto-lock on. Good decision to implent on a touch-screen device.

Looks fantastic

Not a bad performance there with the touchscreen man! Still I would hat to play that game with my fingers on the screen

If anything is important in a MH game its having a clear view of your surroundings lol

Earlier in the thread Vuze found a ton of Language files for other regions. Its safe to say that the mobile initiative will likely be distributed globally bud!

If this is a sign of where Monster Hunter 5 is going...

Mobile is literally the only realistic place left for them to put out new games that still use original PS2 assets, it's been a nightmare scenario for a while now!

That said, this seems like a perfectly fine old game port just like the others that phones have amassed by now (GTA etc).

I'd be more tolerable with remaining with ps2-ish era assets if weren't in fucking eye melting 240p. Anyway, if I could play this on ipad with a controller, I'd probably bite, though the last thing I need is to play more freedom unite.

Yeah this is the biggest point actually

I have some serious 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen fatigue after all the games I have played

I am MORE than ready to leap into 4th Gen with the new mechanics and fresh gameplay.

It does make me happy to see the possibility of the series going outside of JUST 3DS.

Looks like it's a decent port after all. I'm actually hoping the touch screen control sucks enough to force people to buy controller. Let's us see how the touch control fairs in higher rank mission.

Online play is huge. I played a ton of Freedom Unite on PSP, but only solo.

Man, they have to bring this. I really want to play this multiplayer.

Eeeh, a real lock on rubs me the wrong way. I mean if you're touch only I guess it's the only option that would work but it ruins the actual traditional monster hunter gameplay. Now it's a Zelda boss. Couldn't they have done it like the 3DS with tap to focus camera?

You can actually set the target cam to work that way if you want.

Indeed, heaven forbid the franchise moves to a more powerful and flexible platform with a much larger userbase and an actual account system. The horror!

No matter how theoretically possible it is to get a controller plugged in the majority of the audience would then play one of the least touch-only friendly series on a touch only device, so yes, it's not a good fit and hopefully not the future of the series.
