Very surprised at Funimation picking up Free season 2! Glad it's getting a Blu-Ray release though. I guess we'll see season 1 at Anime Expo.

So the age of lewd is over and thus begins the age of duckroll.

I approve.

Bakemonogatari

While hypocritical I did promise to watch this if my friend went out and bought Xenoblade. He's really into it now so I hope I can say the same for my side of the bargain. Here we go.

I would assume (or hope anyway) that when most people express their admiration for a certain character, female or otherwise, that they are doing so for reasons that extend beyond (or don't even include) the extent to which they stimulate certain unnamed specific parts of the human body.

I don't see a problem with that on its face, but then that's just me.

I just want to enjoy cuties. They make me happy and squee.

I don't know what the fuck camel toe supposed to being term for what before just now.. jebus.

Even I know that silly! I did however have to ask some fellow coworkers what a glory hole was. Those girls know a lot.

oh my goodness you are going to love episode 11

I do believe I will.

Not that many. A major reason is also that people with poor eyesight are very rarely allowed to fly planes.

ja nai kara hazukashiky nai mon~

Superior joke.

Re-class is the better choice if you will tread that path. I am under orders not to fight you however.

careeeeeeful Theonik. I dont want to see you take unplanned vacation :(

With only two more months to go, there's a new short PV for the Ano Natsu de Matteru OVA bundled with the Blu-ray box coming out in late August:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r02MbBItomA

Not a whole lot to see in it though, at least without knowing what the narration is saying (EDIT: oh, looks like someone took a stab at a translation in the comments). Better to just watch it for the new Ray song for now.
Oh, and the lovely snippet of the Vidro Moyou piano version at the end.

More of best girl Kanna <3

Here is the thing, there were but this show, this show here is THE temple and the template to which all who have come after it pray to and divine influence from. Sailor Moon wasn't the first Magical Girl show but it is the Ur-Example because of how much popularity and influence it carried within not just its genre but anime itself. At the base level, this is the show the likes of Girls Un Panzer seek as a primary source.

While its true that K-On is the most popular go to example of the genre, Azumanga Daioh predated it by quite a few years and was quite popular at the time.

I hate K-On because it's bland as hell and dreadfully boring. I made the comparison ages ago to shoving a stick of butter in your mouth but thinking about it more it's more like eating a cracker where the baker forgot the salt.

Talking about the end of the age of lewd while simultaneously starting Bakemongatari, I can't handle these contradictions.

But Girls und Panzer is about tank battles, and progression through a tank battle tournament is the core of the entire show.

This is true and it is a much better show then K-On! but I do not forget that it also it part of the linage. I suppose a better example would be like C3-Bu I think I was like one of a dozen people who watched that show.

I do not quite understand this analogy. Personal experience?

Lineage? I might give you C3 under some circumstances, though even that actually diverges from any sensible breakdown of the K-ON formula past the superficial level.
If you were to do an actual delta on these shows you'd find that the similarities are so basic that you could apply them to a wide variety of things before that. 'It's like $thing but $divergence' only works if the things are close enough to make the comparison meaningful.

I disagree completely as even the animation by itself is a really enjoyable watch, but youre Jman and you haaaaaate K-On and theres nothing can be said to change your mind.

Yea, pretty much this, I know Azumanga Daioh really did get the moe sub-genre started and I have my misgivings for that sin, but that show is actuality entertaining and funny. I suppose on the other other hand K-On! merely bored me and wasn't the cosmic nightmare that was Lucky Star.

Tomodachi wa Mahou

Makoto for life.

also RIP BGBW.

So I'm really looking for more dumb shows to watch. I'm 20 episodes through Knight in the Area and this is the most hilarious cliche drama shit I have ever seen in anime.

What other sports shows fill the niche of terribly done Adachi style sports anime?

The Wind Rises

Whereas Miyazaki's last two films felt like a director with nothing to say and no idea how to say it, this feels like the work of a confident director who knows what he wants to say and precisely how to say it. I'm thankful that Miyazaki's dedication to a more grounded film led him to make something that actually makes sense and has a comprehensible narrative arc. I had heard that this was like a Takahata film, and indeed the way it enlivens mundane life with flights of fancy is quintessentially Takahata. The themes it dealt with though - the thrill of flight, creativity, and an anti-war stance which was sensitively handled considering the delicate subject matter - are quintessentially Miyazaki. The way large swaths of time are covered elegantly is a sight to behold. And of course, it's a beautiful film, with eye-dropping animation and attention to detail that few anime can match.

A worthy send-off for a great director.

URGENT COMMUNITY MESSAGE

It has bothered me for some time that there is a growing presence of lewdness in this community. That doesn't surprise anyone probably, given the nature of anime culture in Japan. For a time I have done very little because well, unless it's really NSFW, it's not really against ToS, and I don't want to control a community thread so much. That time is over. I have received feedback from enough people in this community about the increasing unease they with the shifting culture within.

I read the exchange the other day about cnet expressing his "preferences" with regards to NGNL and the cameltoe shit. And this is my reaction:

SuXPmVe.gif

So here's what I have to say. Community threads are not "protected" from how the forum is moderated everywhere else. If people are feeling uncomfortable because someone is expressing views which are generally considered to be problematic in a larger social context, those elements will be removed. No one wants to hear about it, we don't want to bother with discussions defending "unpopular" preferences of characters, we don't want waifu wars, we just want to talk about anime without all the garbage.

If people want to talk about their preference of young girls drawn or otherwise, they can talk about it somewhere which is not NeoGAF. If someone wants to post sexy pictures or lewd stuff like panties, bust sizes, or "dat ass" or whatever, they can do so somewhere else which is not NeoGAF. Off-Topic no longer has "Hot Women" or "Hot Men" threads. Image spam for the purpose of self stimulation aid is discouraged throughout the forum. This will be no different. If you want to discuss your sexual fantasies, your fetishes, and what sexual gratification you get from drawn cartoons, you are not welcome to discuss it here.

If you're not happy with this, please find another community on the internet. I recommend 4chan, Reddit, or Animesuki for starters. If you want to complain, don't bother because this is my response:

THE LINE MUST BE DRAWN HERE. THIS FAR, NO FURTHER.

Azumanga was lucky that because it was "the first" it was kind of before all the misgivings for cutesy anime. I don't think I've ever really seen anyone "outside" the anime community even mention it so I guess it has never really been in their face.

But besides, you can't really hate a show with Chiyo's Father (voiced by Wakamoto).

Most people give up on episode one. I know I did back in 2006 where the grand total of anime I'd seen could be counted on one hand. Luckily I decided to give it a chance years later and I'm glad I waited to watch it because I could appreciate the humour more after familiarising myself with the "anime culture"

Hate is such a strong word. It gets overused quite a bit.

It was said earlier in the thread that we may be reaching the end soon. I kind of wish it didn't end. ;__; It's just a nice enjoyable three minutes to watch. Should note that series one was over by now.

Lucky Star's always polarizing to people. A lot of it is love it or hate it.

I felt like it had a slow start, but it gets great once they swapped directors.

What is a moe subgenre.

What's funny is Lucky Star is my third anime I've ever watched and my first introduction into the otaku/anime culture. I liked it when I first watched it and now that I'm more familiar with animu I'm thinking of going back to re-watch and see how many of the references I get.

By the time Lucky star came around I was already aboard the silly anime train and had watched things like Trouble Chocolate. I bet most of yall dont even know of Trouble Chocolate.

While we can be smart arses (like I usually am when it is brought up outside of this thread) and point of moe is a feeling and whatnot, we have to accept that moe to some means slice of life which itself isn't really a genre since technically they are either sitcoms or dramas.

You should, especially if you watched FMP and Haruhi to get all those references.

I can sort of understand this opinion being held about the first season, which is more or less a standard 4-koma show with somewhat awkward humor and good production values, but I can't understand this opinion being held about the second season, which is one of the best slice-of-life shows out there with sensitive direction and natural characterization.

Everyone talking about K-On is making me want to watch the show to see what has everyone so talkative about it.

And I don't think that was the intended effect some were going for...

I gave up on episode one. Couldn't do Lucky Star, couldn't do Azumanga, couldn't do Nichijou, couldn't do YuYuShiki (though I made it like three episodes in that one!) Generally speaking, I just can't do that kind of random gag-humor. I just need some semblance of a plot or overall continuity to keep my brain from shutting off.

It's just a show about cute girls doing cute things. And they're a band.

That's pretty much all I got from the 7 episodes I saw of the show's first season.

If you don't treat it as a music show and you treat it as a show that adapted a 4 koma/panel manga, you should be fine.

K-On was pretty fun to watch during the craze of it all though.

Sometimes you need to see the demon and form your own opinions on it through experience.

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
Was there a tl;dr consensus on AnimeGAF's feelings towards Guilty Crown or were opinions pretty divided? I'm halfway through the series and it's like a rollecoaster. Starts out bad, gets a little better, is becoming bad again.

Since you're enjoying Hyouka, I think you'll enjoy at least the second season of K-ON.

Well Lucky Star and Azumanga have a bit of plot since time actually does progress rather than say YuruYuri where they are trapped in the same year.

Lucky Star's episode one is infamously a bad indicator for what the rest of the show is like. In fact KyoAni booted the director and replaced him with someone else as a response to the first three episodes. Basically you can't judge it by that one episode alone.

If you're desperate to see at least one school based comedy to say you've done it I could suggest Mitsudomoe (even though I'm extremely biased towards it). I'd say it's like a mild Japanese version of early South Park i.e. the jokes are rather crude and it stars kids but since they are young (primary school level) you don't have to worry about any pandering.
