While it's undeniable that the arc could have greatly benefited from fat-trimming I get the impression that the production team really didn't want to mess with the 'original vision' of the creator even if it would make a stronger story in the long run. There going for the definitive adaptation so they're going to have to include everything.

Of course, I'm also sure that they know there's not that much material to adapt so they have to take their sweet time.

Yeah, that's understandable that they didn't want to alter things too much from the original manga. As you said, it benefits the anime team in that they can keep it going for a bit longer, since there's not much left to adapt. I wonder how long we'll have to wait after the Election arc for a new Hunter x Hunter anime?

Taking their sweet time would imply they plan on keeping the show running, which would be an AWFUL idea. They're like 23 chapters behind the source material. Other shounen series have never gotten that close to the manga without branching off in their own direction or ending prematurely.

They'll probably do what the old series did. End after the next arc and then occasionally put out OVAs when there's enough material. Then in 10 years when Togashi is done with the current arc, they'll reboot the show again.

So Haruka wins the relay and everyone is happy! Afterwards they go to a summer festival for some downtime between races. Rei notices Rin is also at the festival and to keep Rin and Haruka apart he pulls off so great spy moves to follow Rin during the festival. Meanwhile Haruka seems to have finally found a purpose for why he wants to swim. Racing with everyone in the relay gets him pumped and he wants to succeed as a team.

I also have to say the water animation and effects in this anime are amazing. Overall this anime have been very pleasing to watch from a technical standpoint.

Is it just me or does CR not seem to be getting a lot of summer anime, I mean doesn't everything more or less start within a week?

Theres a crunchyroll industry panel on saturday, so I would at least wait until then to assess if they are not having a lot of summer anime.

Only major anime thats airing tomorrow thats not picked up is Railwars.

Excel Saga 25-26 + Final(ish?) Thoughts

The finale was about as anime-finale-feeling as one could ask for, but with the gag gag order no longer bound, there were a few recurring jokes. My overall opinions on the show are that, beyond the first volume, the insanity only compounds. It's much more story-driven than I expected from a series like this, and a lot of the parodies are still recognizable today. (And my toku nerdiness comes into play in the final episode when I recognized Barom-1, but more on that later.) It's slightly dated, but I think it's a good precedent, and in some ways an exploration, of the nature of adaptations themselves. The show's just as much, if not more, Nabeshin's as it is Rikudo's. Getting that much auteur over a favorite property, I'm not sure how much that would fly in today's world where people scrutinize adaptations for accuracy, sometimes in place of quality, but then I remember there are examples like Gatchaman Crowds that also used only the basic concepts of something and spun a story all its own.

Episode 26 felt almost Western-like, mostly in the sense of thumbing its nose at the censors. There was barely a minute in the episode that wasn't violating something of decency. This can be seen as immature, but the protective layer of being meta about it does help. So much blood. And the jokes about
the Sarin gas on the subway
and
that moment with Cosette
go beyond the normal nature of "fanservice bonus episode". I mean, it was a fanservice bonus episode, but it's really more about pushing buttons.

Speaking of that, Poemy.

People saying that Cowboy Bebop is the pinnacle of anime, should consider Gintama. This series is one of the few that has made me laugh as hard and made me feel really sad. It's truly one of a kind.

I guess it's canon for 90% of the cast to be completely shit, but at least we now know there are a few characters on gary stu's level.

As Cosmic has said, there's really not that much material to work with and Hunter x Hunter has a Berserk-esque release schedule so it could be like, 4 or 5 year before there'd be enough for a 'season'. The occasional OVA makes a lot more sense.

I don't mean to imply that their taking their sweet time to keep the show running ad infinitum, just that they had to make X amount of episodes as part of their TV contact and they ensured that the material filled that amount of episodes regardless of how well it flowed. They can't decide to make the series 7.5 episodes shorter (that's just a random example) to improve the pacing, they have to fulfil their contact and ensure the material fills that time frame.

An example of where a studio has had the requirement to make a show of a certain length but then said "fuck it" is Gainax with Nadia. Anno created the show to be a certain length but then they were forced to make an additional season's worth of episodes. Rather than stretch the material to fill the time they just inserted a bunch of terrible filler episodes in between the main story episodes, therefore leaving the main story in pristine condition.

Funnily enough, I got into anime about year ago with the express purpose of watching those three (they were about the only shows that I was vaguely aware of) but today I wouldn't rank either of them near my top.
.

Hit me with them.

Lol at Free. Kyoani knows exactly who watches that show.

Frigging this, its so blatant with the arc ending at seasonal shift lol
that also why I predict they will stretching the current arc for 13 episode despite they only have so few material left.

So earlier I said that I could think of a number of shows that I think are legitimately better than Cowboy Bebop (or are at least on part with it) and as that sounds like a rather inflammatory statement I thought I should at least be gracious enough to furnish y'all with a list. I'm going to cheat and include OVA's but not movies.

- Gintama: I mean, this is almost cheating as it has hundreds of episodes, but god damn if it isn't an amazing property.

- LOGH: Technically an OVA, but whatever. Not without it's flaws, but still a legitimate epic in the classic sense. It explores ideas, concepts, and themes not found before or since in the medium.

- Gunslinger Girl: Probably my most surprising inclusion on this list, but this show is a legitimately amazing series from start to finish. It never misses a beat.

- Ping Pong: Recency bias be dammed, I'm gonna drop this here. I don't care!

- Mushi-Shi: Perfection.

- TTGL: I enjoy the second half of this show so I'm a weird outlier, I suppose.

- Doremi: A gigantic franchise is hard to rate, but the quality and consistency of the writing is off the scale. In terms of how overlooked a show is vs it's quality, this has to have the highest correlation of any title I can think of.

- Eureka Seven: I've only just come to appreciate how spectacular this title is (despite prior familiarity) so there's a slightly amount of recency bias here.

- Space Battleship Yamato 2199 - AOTY.

- Anne of Green Gables - One of the greatest shows of all time directed by one of the greatest directors in anime (Takahata) with the help of the most well known anime director (Miyazaki) and based off of truly fantastic source material. Anne is simply one of the most well realised and most endearing characters in the entire medium. The quality of children's TV anime in the 70's was god damn ridiculous. Watch this show now. Don't make me watchbet you sons of guns.

So yeah, it is a pretty small list, but there are definetenly a number of contenders for the 'throne'.

Yeah, that would probably work out for the best. As much as I'd like it to continue, I'd rather it end than have it continue with filler. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

All these people fawning over underage males in swimwear, with apparent emphasis on their "assets". It is sickening.

As we found out, the reverse is highly frowned upon. Why isn't this?

All the waifus are performing amazing as expected, and of course multiple have scenes trying to seduce our wonderful gary stu. Still waiting for rival boy to show up and challenge Tatsuya for Gary Stu supremacy

I love Gintama but that's extremely niche entertainment and a humor type that doesn't translate universally as It mostly consists of the Straight man scream. It's not about considering other things. It's about having an effect on the industry and worldwide appeal, not to mention if it ages well. Older Gintama already looks aged. Cowboy Bebop still looks good to this day.

The characters in Free are underage? That's news to me I assumed they were like 18-22 based upon the images I saw
