AMC today announced it has ordered a series based on the twisted and popular 90s comic book franchise Preacher, created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. The Sony Pictures Television and AMC Studios co-production was developed for television by Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg (This Is the End, Superbad, Neighbors) and showrunner Sam Catlin (Breaking Bad). Rogen & Goldberg will produce the series through their Point Grey banner, along with Neal Moritzs Original Film. AMC has ordered 10 one-hour episodes, with an expected premiere date in mid-2016.
Preacher is the story of Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper, Agent Carter), a conflicted Preacher in a small Texas town who is inhabited by a mysterious entity that allows him to develop a highly unconventional power. Jesse, his ex-girlfriend, Tulip (Ruth Negga, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), and an Irish vampire named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun, This Is England) embark on a journey to, literally, find God.
Garth Ennis Preacher is, above all, about great characters something we look for in all of our series, said Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC and SundanceTV. The fact that it is also darkly funny, has some great supernatural elements, and takes us on an incredible adventure is just the icing on the cake. The incredible creative team behind this show led by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Sam Catlin and Neal Moritz made a pilot that completely blew us away, and we know the series will satisfy and surprise fans of the comics, and captivate fans of great TV everywhere.
We started reading the comic when it first came out in the 90s, said Rogen & Goldberg. In many ways Garths sense of drama and comedy and Steve Dillons visual aesthetic helped form our style, and the idea that we are actually bringing Preacher to life is a dream come true. This is the craziest thing ever and we cant wait to move forward and work our asses off to make it the best it can be."
Sam Catlin said: Couldnt be more happy with Sony/AMCs decision to bring Garths amazing Preacher to television. Cant wait to spend some quality time with vampires, psychopaths, rednecks and God.
Other previously announced series regulars include Ian Colletti as Eugene Root aka Arseface, W. Earl Brown as Hugo Root and Lucy Griffiths as Emily. Rogen & Goldberg directed the pilot, which was written by Catlin.
How has it been collaborating with the network on that?
Rogen: It’s been amazing, honestly. AMC’s been very open and not restrictive of the things we wanted to do, and we pushed it pretty hard as we generally do. There’s definitely been some conversations here and there, but ultimately they’ve let us do exactly what we wanted, which has been incredible. Literally you can’t say the F word, but other than that, we’ve pretty much been given complete free range.
The casting is pretty good. Too bad it's going to be a poorly written show on AMC. Preacher needs to be on HBO or nothing.

AMC has plenty of awesomely written shows though, while HBO has several shit ones. Unless you think GoT is well written of course!

Ok, now we're cookin' with gas:

HBO probably would have passed on it. Like it did with The Walking Dead.
It's very encouraging to hear that AMC is allowing them to include whatever kind of content they want, minus the 'F word'.
I find it hilarious that you can't say the F word, but slowly ripping a guy's face on screen is totally ok via Walking Dead.
Also, you can show people getting mutilated but you can't have nudity? It's silly.
Still sounds good for a project like this. I'm not sure the language would be the deciding factor in quality.
I think Preacher has been the most recommended book at the comic shop, but I've yet to really give a look at it. Might try out some of the early volumes as this becomes closer to airing.
Concept seems sound.
I'm liking the casting a lot, particularly Cassidy, that is an inspired choice. Having said that, I do have reservations about Dom Cooper. I can't think of a single good performance of his. He also seems a bit weasely to play JC. We'll see how it pans out.
Wow, Tom Brooke looks like 90% of Steve Dillon's character art.
Doesn't he? To be true to the comic he should have been cast as all the characters.
Roger Sterling said "fuck" during an episode of Mad Men. Wasn't even bleeped. How come they got away with it?

AMC apparently allows for one audible "fuck" per season. Every other "fuck" gets muted. Not sure why they changed that line in the season 4 finale of The Walking Dead though.

I'm guessing advertisers. TWD is the biggest show on TV, everyone wants a piece of it, but I'm sure a fair few of the major brands still won't OK Fuck, which given the show is stupid, but there are fair few people out there that would write a lot of angry letters if they heard it even if they just saw half a dozen zombies get their heads smashed to a pulp. Priorities. Plus local advertisers and cable providers probably also have rules against it. So they dubbed it to Screwing.

Doesn't he say "Shit", then? Or am I misremembering?the audible fuck better be the Herr Starr mirror scene

Plus, if you can't have nudity, how is that "complete free range?" In fact, I'd say that nudity and freedom to swear up a storm are both essential to telling the Preacher tale.
Never read the comics but I can't really get hyped by a drama written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Goddamn there are gonna be some cringe worthy jokes.

Breaking Bad's Sam Catlin is credited as the writer of the pilot. He also co-wrote 'Fly' and 'Crawl Space', and 8 other episodes of Breaking Bad..
Right. I'm just saying to the other guy, of all the things to worry about, it won't be that this ends up being Pineapple Express the show or anything.
On the day after Halloween, you can feast on a supersized episode of AMCs The Walking Dead. Coming Soon reports that the network will air a 90-minute episode for its made-up/promotional holiday, The Walking Dead Mega Sunday, on November 1. The extended episode, Heres Not Here, was written by showrunner Scott M. Gimple and will see the survivors doubting each other. Throw in the walkers, Ricks snarling, and Carols knives, and it sounds like a pretty standard episode.
But wait, theres moreAMC will also air the world premiere of the trailer for Preacher, the networks other comic-book show. Audiences will get their first look at Dominic Cooper as Jesse Custer, the titular preacher whos literally spreading the word of God, and all of these other actors and characters. And for the hat trick, the network will also run the television premiere of the trailer for Into The Badlands, that post-apocalyptic, martial-arts drama set in the American South. Theres currently no word on whether the extended episode will eat into The Talking Deads time, although host Chris Hardwick could probably use the extra time for additional effusing.
Wilson plays Donny Schenck, a Civil War re-enactor and abusive thug who gets into altercations with Jesse Custer (the Preacher). The decision to elevate the role to regular from recurring was made after the pilot was shot. Preacher is slated to premiere later this year.
This is going to be too censored but hopefully it'll be a fun ride regardless.
I'm afraid that Jesse, and crew won't be very mobile in the TV adaptation.
