A spokesman for Prairie A&M confirmed to KPRC2 that the woman in the picture is currently enrolled as a freshman at the university and is a member of the soccer team.

The picture, which the student posted to social media, shows her face covered with black tape, with the caption, "When you're tryna fit in at your HBCU." HBCU is an acronym for Historically Black College and University.

In a statement, Prairie View A&M President George C. Wright acknowledged the picture and the backlash it's received, writing, in part, "we have a duty to educate our community to always try to act in a responsible manner and recognize that speech does have consequences."

The picture has since gone viral, with calls, by some, for the student's expulsion. Students on campus gathered Thursday night to discuss the matter and brainstorm ways for the campus community to unite following the response to the picture.

"The slander and stuff like that, it's just not how you respond to things. It's just bad. You don't do people like that," said Christopher Light, a junior at Prairie View A&M.

How did she think this was okay? It's disgusting how normalized racism among these girls. Why go out of your way to make a racist joke like this and not expect any blowback? I'm so baffled on how someone would not know this was wrong. This is fucking ridiculous.

There are different kinds of face masks. You're referring to one that's like a cream, but there are ones that are like paper. Some even come with designs so it looks like you're wearing a mask.

We should pay less attention to stupid people.

Not that I endorse this at all, but just recognize that she is not that bright and needs to work on her judgment and move on. You don't need to shut down the school for every idiot who makes a horrible post on social media.

Edit: Oh. I was thinking the tape as being a facial mask of some sort. I dunno about that stuff. If she put tape on her face just for that then fuck her.

As I understand it though, this isn't a face mask but a girl with every intention of making a hilarious snapchat post decided to tape her face up.

Edit: Guess it was a face mask. My bad. Despite this, it is still incredibly ignorant for her to do such a thing.

At this point, with people who have been photoed and captioned w/o permission and people who have posted racist ass selfies, you have to think that no one would want to be photographed w/a facial mask of any sort unless they were a professional model.

It's definitely an unfunny racist 'joke', but you have to wonder how 'social media' Snapchat really is. I would hazard a guess it keeps happening in this case the same way people's naked pics keep ending on other websites. They have a feeling it's only temporary and directed at friends. But nothing online is temporary. I think Snapchat has a responsibility to instill this idea more. Not excusing her behavior I should stress.
