Oculus holds "diversity luncheon;" refuses to address Luckey questions. CEO needs mom

I don't think Facebook should be policing Lucky's political views and whatever apology or regret is on his part, not Facebook. His views are his own and it should be understood. Granted if Lucky decides to make anymore disturbances that could reflect badly on Facebook I think it's appropriate to fire him after this serious warning, but for now a window seat is appropriate. I don't know that there is a hard line for me to draw on what activities are banishable especially given the awkward situation Republicans are in right now and how toxic the political arena has become, but I'd err on the side of leniency lest it become too much of a political witch hunt. It was not so long ago that problematic (though more left leaning) actions lead to the firing of Allison Rapp at Nintendo and I didn't find that appropriate either. We need to be able to separate these things better in our heads.
Being a racist is a political view?

. “I...I can’t,” Iribe told me. “I have to go find my mom, sorry.”

Greatest. Response. EVER.

Are people saying that he should be fired because he supports Trump?

No, not at all. Anybody arguing that doesn't really understand what the issue is. In addition, Luckey came out and said he isn't even voting for Trump, so that's definitely not the issue.

This wording is super vague, almost Trump-esque, but I'm on mobile. My apologies :D

Damn. Honestly, I'm super irritated with this article.

The title makes it sound like they're doing something, when the article actually clearly states they're doing nothing.

They are clearly doing something by shutting people up, ignoring questions, and trying to control the message.

Because, if there's any truth to this...
"In fact, that story was completely and utterly false," the complaint continues. "Luckey lacked the training, expertise, resources, or know-how to create commercially viable VR technology. His computer programming skills were rudimentary, and he relied on ZeniMax's computer program code and games to demonstrate the prototype Rift. Nevertheless, this fraudulent tale was frequently reported in the media as fact."
...cutting Luckey loose would be a big risk should he start talking.
Oh shit.

"As long as we don't talk about it, we don't have to admit culpability or draw attention to the very real fact he will profit from all of our hard work!"

I await the soft public appearance in two years where he'll subsequently be booed off stage or at least ridiculed in full force again for his actions.

It's cause they don't have the balls to type that shit on their real account(s). Just like FB/Oculus don't have the balls to take proper action against their dumbass mascot(Palmer).

When one answered that they wished Oculus would, at worst, make a statement acknowledging the situation and, at best, have Palmer no longer be involved with Oculus, a representative told the developer that neither of those things was going to happen.

Before I had a shred of sympathy for Facebook being saddled with Palmer's baggage. Now I have zero sympathy and refuse to even consider buying their platforms.

Normally I don't agree with firing people for this behavior but Palmer was engaging in an activity to influence things at a national level. He already got enough money. He doesn't need more to spread hate in the form of unfunny memes.

It's clear based on past statements as well as this one that they are two faced.

I've been in a financial situation this year so the best I've been able to do is set aside pennies to one day jump onto VR, and after the Luckey thing was revealed I decided to get the Vive when time comes.

This whole situation is disgusting and I'm very happy that developers are threatening to leave.

The description of Carmack's reaction combined with the quote, shows that at best he does not know how to treat these situations with minorities with sensitivity or at worst he is hiding some nasty ass views, maybe even similar to Luckey.

It would not surprise me that an older white male programmer has some socially backwards views, no matter how much I respect his accomplishments in his field.

why all of a sudden are you people letting politics get in the way of you playing a game?

what did these people even do other than try to manipulate their public image... something that every single game company with a marketing strategy does de facto. but now you have an axe to grind?

I know you're banned now, but for everyone else, since it might not be clear:

Palmer Lucky directly funded and supported hate groups exactly like those who personally sought to destroy the lives of people who work on VR games

r/the_donald is no different from GamerGate, and GamerGate thoroughly wrecked Phil Fish's life. Phil Fish is one of the main developers of SUPERHYPERCUBE.

There is no "keep yer politiks out of my vidja games" here because they're inherently linked to the core. Games are politics when it comes to this story. By supporting Palmer Luckey you're supporting someone who actively makes lives of Oculus developers or potential Oculus developers worse.

The article certainly tried to paint this picture. Actually jumping to such a conclusion based on no first-hand knowledge of the man is a harmful thing to do, and casting such aspersions on him because he is a "white programmer" is... Look, just please keep more of an open mind.

It's alarming to me how many folks here and elsewhere are only coming to stories about Oculus looking for reasons to hate everyone at the company. There are dozens of brilliant, wonderful people over there trying to solve difficult problems with products, services, and yes, internal culture. When you are only interested in these problems insofar as you can shit all over the people trying to solve them, then you may be amusing yourself, but do not pretend that you are helping anyone.

Is there an active hashtag for this stuff? I wanna tweet my displeasure in Facebook/Oculus's direction and would like to do it right.

I'm still sticking with Oculus for this gen of VR. Despite the ignorant response from the executives I don't believe Oculus should be held responsible for Luckey's actions.

If these people were "bad asses", they would speak up against Luckey or leave the company instead of being associated with a racist who empowers racist causes with his Oculus money and also happens to be the public face of the company – a person that represents these "bad asses" to the public.

How do you go from spearheading this entire VR movement to this...?
It just feels so wrong and sucks for some of the actual decent human beings working at Oculus. Palmer fucked up, but Oculus fucked themselves with their silent approval and lack of proper response.

I'm so glad I dumped all my oculus stuff on eBay and gave the proceeds to Clinton. I originally hoped the problem was just Luckey but it clearly isn't. No one else gives a shit about his racist views and its incredibly sad.

But my conscience about kickstarting the rift feels cleaner now.

Don't give this company money. Plenty of other VR out there to use instead. They won't even talk about the guy? Wrong answer.

I understand people being upset about this but if you don't think most CEO/CTO or any other executive is just as right wing and out of touch you have your head in the sand. I'm not saying its right or we should accept it but people need to realize there a lot more people at the top that likely agree with Luckey than don't. If you don't want to support Occulus because of the founders political views you probably need to stop supporting a whole lot of other products too. At lease we can all still enjoy Ben and Jerrys :D
