"Indies should definitely jump onto the PS Vita" - Retro City Rampage Developer

I'll be frank here. Indie games generally do not have enough content to make me want to play on my consoles nor pc. But they are perfect for an instant on, bust out and play system like the vita. You switch the game on, play for 15 minutes, then you suspend the game. No waiting the windows to load, no fiddling with remote controls, and looking at the console boot up screen every so for time. These are little things, but they are a pretty significant barrier to entry for a game you want to play for 15 minutes.

The fact that I can play them practically anywhere on my vita is also just gravy.

I think it has a lot to do with the type of game he made...throwback games work much much better on handhelds...not way would I play a PS1 on a PS3, but VIta? definitely

Most platforms where indie games are not widely successful yet is a decent platform for indie games, as you don't have visibility / discoverability issues. Conversely any platform that is good for indie games will quickly become much less good because your game starts to get lost in the crowd.

As an indie game without much marketing muscle not competing with a ton of other games is a huge plus.

I've bought.....just about every Humble Bundle from August onwards, and I can safely say I've played two of the games I've gotten, tops.

The idea of sitting down at my monster PC to play indie games is really just unappealing. But on the go? Yes please, take my money(again.....sigh).

I've been hearing more and more indies talking Vita.

I'll have to jump on soon enough if it continues to shape up like it is.

yes, even with just reading this thread, I'm having the urge to get Hardboiled Chicken right now, it's even worse in Vita OT thread where first post of every new page there's game recommendation.

same here
$10 just seems like a lot considering the other games available and Im sure this game will see a sale soon

I have a Vita and I love it.

But the game probably sold so well because there is so few Vita titles available.

If we were having a considerable weekly amount of Vita releases it probably would not have sold so well.

NervousXtian

Thought Emoji Movie was good. Take that as you will.
I'm not surprised... XBLA games seem to sell like crap most of the time.. which honestly is a bit surprising.

Also, Vita is pretty starved for games and small downloadable indie type games would be instant buys for a lot of people who own them.

Honestly, if this trend keeps up.. and the PS4 integration.. I'm probably buying one.. even with the bleak future for bigger budget games.

The vita has had over 100 games released over its one year lifespan. That is almost 2 games weekly, so it is 'nt as game starved as you think.

Awesome to hear that the platform is finding a market online. I've got like 20 Vita titles all lined up for the March cash-back sale. Now if only Sony can do something about the bubble limit...

I wish they would let us customize to either square or bubbles and give us folders and portrait orientation at the OS level already.

We need the notable PSN games to be ported to Vita

Super Meat Boy
Fez
Limbo
Outland
Joe Danger
Journey
Braid
Castle Crashers

Gunman Clive and Critter Crunch as well. If the ones that are already on PSN could allow you to download it for free if you bought the PS3 version, I would love them forever.

You know what kind of non AAA, downloadable only games I would love though? Tell Tale and LA remake games. Man, playing MI2 or TWD or Sam and Max would be glorious on the vita. I hope at least TWD season 2 comes to vita and is a day 1 cross buy game :D

We're huge fans of the Vita so if there's an audience of dedicated indie and/or RPG lovers who own the system and if we can work out the logistics, we'd love to start supporting it. Don't have anything official to announce yet, but if we did something for the Vita, it'd be more likely to be our upcoming project, CSH (http://zeboyd.com/2013/01/15/next-next-game-preliminary-ideas-kickstarter-plans/ ) rather than our back catalog.

It will be a Science-Fiction Spy-themed RPG.

Distant future; none of this Star Ocean “Let’s crash land on a fantasy planet” nonsense. Laser guns, virtual reality, robots, giant mechs, spaceships, the works.

Noticeable improvements to our game engine. Will still retain the 16-bit aesthetic but will be more sophisticated than anything that could have actually come out on the SNES/Genesis.

Chrono Trigger-style combat directly on the exploration map.

Will probably have a Diablo-style New Game+ where you can restart the game with your end-game characters and face high LV-appropriate challenges (and maybe even a little new content as well).

Sold

Best of luck to you! Unfortunately, PSM doesnt seem to have the same pull to me as "normal" PSN games, especially considering its not that well integrated into the PSN store as the other games.

It's a combination of non PSN integration (trophies, leaderboards), high prices compared to the same game on other platforms, and the games just plain sucking

Good luck with Sony stuff! It's a great thing when the major companies make things easier with the little guys. Also hope your Nintendo stuff gets sorted out as well!

EDIT: I'm curious, when did you submit your application to Nintendo?

Oh!
I submitted about 4-5 weeks ago.

EDIT:
All I had to do to get started with PSM was start talking on twitter about it while it was in Beta, and we're getting A+ treatment (which is why I can't talk specifics as a matter of fact!)

Here's a little mockup using some assets from a while back.

Is refreshing reading a positive Vita thread.

The machine is fantastic, and I would love to see more indie support. It seems like a great fit.
Also, looking at the PS4 presentation it seems that Sony is going to lengths into making better relationships with indies.

Fostering up and coming game developers is key to the future of gaming in my opinion. We need more people to make games and an environment that encourages more to start up. These last few years has been exciting to watch and now Sony and Nintendo have gone out of their way to cater to indie devs, so the next few years will be even better.

Sony's always been indie-friendly to a degree. You have to remember that this was the company doing things like Net Yaraoze back in the 90s.

I'd sell my first born
a small tub of jizz
for Minecraft on Vita.

eh, this came out wrong, nevermind..

Sony sent Notch a rather nice Vita package for his birthday, which obviously implied something. Minecraft hasn't happened on PSN yet due to Microsoft's exclusivity agreement. Minecraft: Pocket Edition exists on iOS/Android so MS's agreement probably only covers traditional platforms.

That definitely looks like something Nintendo would be interested in. I mean, I've heard that sometimes people from Nintendo simply look through the indie dev thread here at GAF and contact the people who make interesting stuff. Just depends who you talk to I guess, but it's always nice to be under the wing of a company.

Make sure to bug them to include trophies/psn integration to be added to the SDK otherwise your game might, and most likely will, suffer.

When does that expire?

Oh, I don't fully agree with all of that. However this is already happening, eventually. http://www.polygon.com/2012/10/17/3...bile-courting-indie-developers-to-bring-risky
We're excited to do some leaderboard things too for our other game (that I've not posted a screenshot of). Look forward to GDC, basically.

Talk to Dan Adelman from Nintendo. That requirement's been secretly waved for a while now.
Thanks for the tip! :D

There are many indie games that I can really see myself playing on the vita more so than PSB/XBLA or steam. It fits the style of console more as well.

Oh oh do Dustforce next.

I'm in the same mindset as the guys above. I just can't get myself to play indie game on my gaming rig. On a Vita though sure, I'd play, no question.

Playing short quick burst of indie games whilst watching tv, having lunch or something is nice.

Sometimes I wonder if the reason indie games would sell well on the Vita, is mainly due to the 'Vita has no games' joke...which kinda makes me think that it makes Vita owners desperate for SOMETHING to play on the system >_>;

Not for me. It's more the power of the handheld, the screen, buttons and overall system makes it more appealing to me. Right now I'm way more motivated to play a PSOne, PSP or an indie game on the vita then say the big TV or old handheld. The system is amazingly designed.

You guys get it. I've been saying the longest time. High profile indie games with on the go with tangible controls can do a lot to separate Vita from the 3DS and phone/tablets.

It's out on most things and plays well with a touchscreen although games can last for a while but that's fine as it's rather immersive.

It plays well on a large touchscreen. On a smaller one it can become a little fiddly and I think the screen on the Vita would be too small. It's difficult selecting a specific touchable object sometimes on the iPad, so it's hard to imagine how you're supposed to hit them when amongst a large group of similarly touchable objects on the Vita.

Agree 100%
Would love to see more indie titles come to Vita.
Sometimes you want console quality gaming on the go, but sometimes you still want something you can get an instant fix out without it being a Bejeweled/Angry Birds clone. Indie games provide a great balance between hardcore and casual, and accessibility is extremely important.

How about FTL? I heard a tablet version was planned... I reckon they could do some nifty stuff with Vita's front/rear touch controls.

Everyone should be jumping to make games for the Vita. It's a shame the Vita is in the state it's in; it is by far the best gaming hardware to ever exist for a portable device.

yeah the vita is a really wicked platform for indies. its probably where all its overkill amount of inputs shine, in that such a broad range of games can play on it, and to generalise indie games require far less horsepower than traditional games so hotline miami, will likely be graphically identical the pc version running on a $2000 rig.

This is greatness, but I think many of you are selling the Vita community a little short. We aren't just snapping up every gamebecause it's there. We're the same garters that build high end PCs, and argue about games with you guys.

I know it's a meme that the Vita "has no games," but many of us that own one are a bit more informed about what's on the system. Between Vita, PSP, and PS1 games, I have over 50 games for my system. A mix between retail and digital, and Indies. I'm not new to Indies games, not by a long shot. I have Steam and PSN catalogue that's pushing a hundred plus games long. The problem is, I'm simply not at home long enough to play any of them. But I do have 2 hours to kill each day on the bus to and from work. So when a game like RCR (which I actually enjoy), Life of Pixel, etc, land on the Vita, I buy it, not for some ki d of desperation for something to play, bit because I'll actually be able to play it at all. Sure, I could buy it on Steam or PSN, but it'd just end up I'm my massive Steam and PSN backlog. I actually play the 50+ games on my Vita, even though I'm often juggling them (I'm currently cycling through sessions of AC3 Lib, Corpse Party, Sly TiT, Knytt Underground, Rocketbirds, RCR, and quite a few PS1 titles I've never played like Vagrant Story and Legend of Mans).

Anyway, the point is that the Vita community isn't as pathetically starved for games as we're often led to believe on gaf. The year 1 library of the handheld, objectively speaking, has been very impressive. Not everybody blows through games in a few days, or buys every game day one. There are still a few Vita titles from last year I've yet to pick up like Zero Escape and Persona 4.

This influx of Indies debs is fantastic news. I own Terraria on Steam, but I plan on buying the PSN version, and if they ever make a Vita version, I'll be snagging that one as well. I'm really glad to hear that, even with such a small install base, Indies debs can make some money. That's really great news.

The Vita is perfect for indie games because it's so versatile. It supports such a wide variety of input methods. I'm still waiting for someone to use the back touch in an interesting way. But so far, it hasn't happened. (That I'm aware of, anyway.)

PSM games cannot use the back panel, because PSM is also supported by phones. Your game would have to be Vita native, meaning your little team would need development hardware.

Ah. Right. That makes sense. But it's too bad because if anyone could figure out something cool to do with the back touch, it would be an indie dev.

Have to admit ive bought more PSN content for the vita in the time i have owned since launch than my ps3 which i also had at launch.

Perfect fit for the platform, and glad its getting some recognition. Well deserved it imo.

That's cool mate. I like the Vita too, its screen just makes games look great haha.

Its not an indie game but I love FIFA's use of it for shooting. Probably will work well with the DS4 controller as well.

This thread is awesome though. As a vita owner a lot of these games look amazing! I don't game on my computer so things like Hotline Miami and the like are brand new for me. And I really don't like playing short indie games on my TV but i'm loving things like RCR on my vita.

I wonder how well MMF2 games can be ported to the Vita considering it's getting Vita support in the future. Would be great for me!
