And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
Tambor is wonderful in this, I'm glad he's been given another great role. I was ready to hate this show from the pilot because the kids' stories were making me kind of nauseous, but after watching a few episodes I guess that was the point, ha.

Just finished the season. I really liked it but I wish the episodes were longer and that there were more of 'em!!!

So will we have to wait a year for the next batch or is amazon quicker in ordering and producing new seasons than regular network TV?

Just finished.

Overall, I loved it, despite a few frustrations.
I know Jewish moms like Shelly, but I thought Judith Light played it a biiiiit too arch, especially when juxtapose with Tambor's performance. Also, I was consistently frustrated by Sarah's decisions, but that's sort of the point of her character.

Everytime that Maura was on screen, it was fucking electric. The bathroom at the Beverly Center and Trans Got Talent and the aftermath... Those were the most amazing moments of the show. God! That dinner scene with Maura and Len! And the flashback episode. There is this pathos about the show that makes it work so well - there's something a bit raw about the series that made it that much more moving.

I do wish we saw a bit more of Josh's frustrations with Maura's coming out, because that feels true to that character and I think is unfortunately true to many Trans people. It was definitely present, but I was expecting more to be mined from it.

And hi Colton.

Can't wait for season 2. Guess I'll order socks with free shipping in the meantime.

you speak so well

This was my main complaint as well.
In a show filled with lots of subtle, nuanced performances Light's over the top Jewish mother often felt a bit out of place.
Nothing huge, just something that could be ironed out in a second season.

I agree, but it's also something that needs to be tweaked. Her lines were great, but they'd land more if she was a bit more subdued in her performance.

love this show

from a transgender perspective, Tambor's acting is amazing
If Tambor doesn't get nominated for this, its all a sham. Judith Light is just as good too, I think.

Up through episode five at this point, and as someone who has recently had to start really dealing with the trouble of using public restrooms and the looks/comments you get when you don't fit exactly into one side or the other... yeah, the bathroom scene hit me pretty hard. I've not gone through anything that bad, but it still hit too close to home.

There's always the "people who aren't part of a group trying to portray what it means to be part of that group," but I feel like Tambor has real respect and love for the character that he's playing. Really happy about how most elements of the trans topic have been handled so far.

I'm halfway through and enjoying it. But I loathe all three kids, and the mother's performance is like nails on a chalkboard.

Tambor is great.

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
Just watched the first three episodes, also making it the very first Amazon Prime content I've watched despite being a subscriber for like 8 or 9 years. Of course their programming is much newer than that, but still, I've almost avoided it.

Strong show, I'm really enjoying most of it. The main exception right now is Ali. These character tropes do nothing for me, the adult child who "never landed", just bouncing through life with wild abandon. Josh is certainly a trainwreck too, but there's a little more grounding him in place, a touch more adulthood and accountability.

Wow, ep 7 was great.

The children leaving one by one and Maura's reactions. That was heartbreaking.

Except I don't buy for a second how the
rabbi was so suddenly attracted to Josh. He was a complete and utter tool when they first met when his step-father was missing, then he goes to the synagogue and she's totally into him.

IMO, it would have been better if she was grossed out by him, he was fascinated with her, and he had to actually win her over. As it is, her character just feels like a Good Thing teed up for him to immediately screw up.

Damn.

Finished it. I had some small problems with the writing, but overall it was really enjoyable, especially the acting. Amy Landecker is one of those actors who I've seen in a bunch of stuff and liked but never knew who they were. She was excellent. Gaby Hoffmann is awesome.

And hi Colton.

Finished episode 6. I appreciate that there isn't really big flashy Los Angeles stuff, just little references to neighborhoods and locations.

"My good friend bell hooks... don't mean to namedrop..." Hah.

I found out Gaby Hoffman was the little girl in Uncle Buck, which is amazing.

The show ended leaving me wanting more, so that's a good thing. I was kind of worried that Tambor would do his Uncle Oscar thing for this role and play it for laughs, but I was so happy to see how the humor sprang naturally out of how seriously he took the role. This has to be my favorite performance in a long time.

The kids' stories seem purposefully obnoxious, but I like how they all crested into the finale. I don't see a problem with the rabbi falling for Josh, since she plays it like they're a really similar type. And I still can't get over how good an actress Carrie Brownstein is. Was she acting while she was in her band or something, or just a natural?

Still on episode three. I can't really watch this show more than one show at a time because it's too emotionally draining. :|
I really liked your blog on the first episodes!

I've just finished all ten episodes, and I absolutely loved the show. The writing, music, acting, and camera work were really top-notch. I can't wait for season two!

Just started on it yesterday with the wife..show is great. Waiting for her to get in to watch the last 5. It's sad, I want to recommend it to some folks, but I think their heads would explode..sucks.

Wow I thought one of the actors in this show was Laurie from The Leftovers but it's a different person... Amy Landecker and Amy Brenneman look very much alike

Seems you and my wife need new glasses. :p

Loved it, incredibly enjoyable and easy to watch.

-The issues covered were taken seriously without feeling like a PSA.
-Each family member was interesting / likeable
-Tambor completely nails his role.

4 cups out of 5

Best show I've seen this year not named Rectify or The Knick.

Tambor killed it. I didn't mind the more obnoxious or arch performances around him. The juxtaposition felt kind of realistic actually. I could watch him and Judith Light interacting for days.

Watched the first four episodes back to back last night.

Jeffrey Tambor is killing it with his performance. Absolutely amazing.

I keep being surprised by the number of actors that keep popping up in the episodes.

This show is incredible- definitely Amazon's OITNB and sits up there with True Detective and Fargo as the best TV this year.

It actually kinda reminds me of a more mature, but just as crazy version of Arrested Development? The script is just so good.

That's how I felt -- I'd give the whole season a B+. There were definitely writing issues I had with the show, but I had such an amazing experience watching it.

I'm up to episode five, and I have to say that thus far I'm loving practically everything about it. Almost certainly will wind up as one of my favourite shows of the year.

Girlfriend and I finished it the other night, really beautiful series. All the writing and performances are fantastic. I really want Tambor to get some Emmy love. Hopefully Amazon can push him well.

So happy it's coming back. Are any of Amazon's other original offerings anywhere close to this in terms of quality?
