All I can say is,
if Zwei somehow managed to survive the aftermath of the train crash, I'll be thoroughly surprised.

RWBY Episode 11

Hooolllyyyyshiieeeett!

OMG, the walls have fallen. I did not expect that.. Also was that Rose who saved Yang?

Weep for me GAF. Because of internet troubles it literally took 2 hours to watch a 16 minute episode. So much stuff !! Who was that? What were those? What next? Oh god.

Also, if anyone in Houston is going to the season 2 showing next Thursday, PM me. Me nice to hangout. If you're like... 18+ at least =P

EDIT:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EDR5N3A/?tag=neogaf0e-20
RWBY S1 is $10 right now.

Also, I literally can not watch the episode again cuz interwebs. I'm so sad for me.

That was amazing, and would have made for a great season finale. If that was
Summer Rose
or
Yang's mom
, then oh boy! I feel like it may be the former, the
red
clothing gives me that feeling.

Aww I would love to. STL-GAF am cry. Got a email for RTX 2015 today, will most likely make the trip down for that.

Considering he survived
getting smashed with a bat and being set on fire, then sent through the chest of one of those Paladin mechs, I'd say that Zwei isn't your typical dog.

It reminded me of Rinoa's Angelo Cannon from Final Fantasy 8.

Man, it's amazing how I can go from "I don't care about any of this" to "that was the dumbest thing I've ever seen" to "damn this is a good fight, the music is good, and I like the character designs" to "that was the dumbest thing I've ever seen" to "I don't care about any of this" in the span of one episode of RWBY.

Congratulations Monty Oum, your character design and fight choreography skills continue to succeed at making me put forth the effort of watching this.

Pretty big spoiler from the actresses as to who else might be part of the conspiracy in the Afterbuzz TV recap.
Bet it was either Barbara or Kara. Is this is far reaching spoiler or just for next week?

I forgot what it was like having a episode I want to rewatch multiple times. I'm going with mystery lady being Summer Rose. Though the whole armor with schoolgirl under clothes is such the mismatch. It gave us a huge glimpse at how otherworldly Dust can get. Right after I felt we were getting on the fringes of what we saw in EP1.

I think it was Lindsey. I'd imagine it will probably play out next week- basically, there's one character who has place all of their cards in a position to gain a lot from the events at the end of this episode.

I went back and re-watched Yang's lecture to Blake. At first, I thought Summer was definitively dead and Yang's mom had just vanished, but on further re-watch all they said about Summer was that she never came back from a mission.

We're going to go full How To Train A Dragon 2 in like a season or two. But with Grim instead of dragons.

Well for the most part that was quite enjoyable, with some very nice fights. Too bad shit has hit the fan at the end.XD Hope the finale rocks.

Lol, if it one of the mothers, then this could lead to a Valka indeed especially with that getup she has.XD

I thought Ruby's mom would have used a scythe but I think that was originally Qrow's weapon, which Ruby modeled hers after IIRC. Considering the timing and how strong she seemed it has to be either
Ruby or Yang's mom.

RTX is usually stressful for me in my off time because that's the same weekend anime season starts. August is much better! I'd think Austin is less active when it's not the 4th of July but as far as I'm concerned that's a positive.

Ruby's hair. Protected Yang. Multi-Dust Schnee concepts. A bad ass. Maybe she's all of Team RWBY's Mom !!

I'll be doling out stuff instead of a big write up maybe. Don't have time to sit down for an hour and write stuff out super slowly.

First thing I noticed that I really liked, Team RWBY lost. A lot. Ozpin couldn't stop Cinder's plan, Yang lost, Weiss lost, Ruby failed to stop the train. Blake won her battle against probably the least combat capable big bad on the train. So that's a positive. Someone said this could've been a season finale, and it isn't!! We get to see everything play out and that's really exciting to me. Hell, because Team RWBY doesn't have chronic "Don't tell your teammates stuff" disease, that even means that at some point we're going to confront the whole Yang being saved thing.

So the story is that Roosterteeth was doing an Extra Life Charity stream (that I wish I knew about 5 hours before it ended) and one of the stretch goals was that Jeff would release a song early. It's the dance song in EP8. Name of the song is "Shine".

I was super excited for this song but I don't think it delivered out for me. A few tens more times on repeat will do it in for me good though and it'll fit well with my Playlists.

Thanks for posting this. $120,000 raised for this, that's awesome.

I really like the song too.

Yang and Blake's fights were great this past episode. Everything else... not so great. They really needed some more colour for the train-top fight. So much gray...

I've finally listened to the song in my car like I do all other RWBY songs, love it. Absolutely loved it. Location really determines how I feel about my music.

You didn't like Weiss's fight? =0 It was a bit... Vanilla, I suppose. More importantly we got to see the huge power differential between Team RWBY and a legit Hunter. Oobleck took out those bots with single shots. Team RWBY had a 2 for 3 (4 including Ruby not completing the mission) on their fights. I agree with the color thing, but I think that's what they wanted out of the scene. The train scene in Black Trailer shows they can do a nice looking train environment if they wanted to.

Okay- scrubbing through to find it again to cite in the next part of my post, I realized that the spoiler was speculation from one of the hosts, and the cast then more or less implied they were on the right track. It's not the explicit spoiler I thought it was on first viewing, but some pretty strong wink-wink-nudge-nudge.

_____

So- with less than 24 hours until the finale goes up for sponsors, does anyone have any predictions?

Since my prediction involves the potential spoiler from the AfterbuzzTV interview, I'm going to spoiler tag it:

I'm predicting that Ironwood being a co-conspirator, and bringing his army to Vale in preparation for the breach is true.

His most likely motive is to make the kingdoms take defense more seriously, and fund a standing army rather than relying on huntsmen and huntresses. I also predict this will backfire catastrophically.

We'll learn that Grimm can only be harmed by beings with an aura, which will make all of Ironwood's robots useless (with the exception of Penny)

Cinder most likely already knows this.

coolasj19

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?
Predictions are...
Ozpin is much older than anyone in the cast.
Cinder uploaded a virus to disable communications between Vale and any other kingdoms.
Penny kicks some Grimm butt.

This is the link to the live Q&A that's immediately after the finale.
http://youtu.be/0Z9-CNegd7o

I won't be here until later because I'll be hanging out with some Redditors after the showing.

I have no idea what is going to happen. And I skipped that Afterbuzz episode due to the possible spoiler. Thanks Jorok. :)

All I know is I am super excited but also disappointed that the Volume is over already.

After watching that episode, the possible spoiler looks like it was wrong.

Be sure to stick around after the credits- there's a post-credits stinger, followed by an extended X-Ray and Vav trailer.

Yikes, that was a really sloppy finale. At no point did the amount of Grimm shown on screen warrant the addition of soldiers or any other teams. Team RWBY could have handled that situation by themselves, but for whatever reason they decided to cram in all the other characters. The worst offense is what they did with Sun and Neptune. Why the hell were they even there? Just to make that stupid joke?

The fight scenes weren't anything special either. It felt like such a waste to introduce these new characters in this episode. The character voiced by Ashley seems pretty cool, though.

The after credits scene is interesting and whatever is going on with that character is more captivating than the actual plot for me. Pretty much sold on her being
Yang's mother.

The X-Ray and Vav show looks excellent. I'm really impressed with the animation quality they are able to achieve.

The credits list the mystery woman's name as
Raven Branwen

Last week, I saw posts on the Rooster Teeth forums claiming that Monty had put up edits on the RWBY wiki, but they were deleted because the admins couldn't confirm it was actually Monty and not some fan posting their headcanon. His edits listed Ruby and Yang's parents team as:

Taiyang Xiao Long
Summer Rose
Qrow Branwen
Raven Branwen

with Qrow and Raven being twins

The credits seem to confirm this.

Eh outside of trying a bit too hard to cram as many characters in the first part, that was a decent finale.
AAAAAAAH YES ADAM FINALLY! Can't wait to see more of his badass-y and interaction with him and Blake. And dat post credit scene, definitely looks like yang's mom (maybe a bit too similar lol).
And now for a long wait for volume 3.

For the big finale, it wasn't really that big. Or at the very least, the sense of scale was anemic. We are getting some good defining over who is more powerful than other people though. Team CFVE is definitely a bigger set of players than Team RWBY right now. Know what bugged me the most? The only thing Glynda did was fix a street. Like... what?

But the reveals were SO HYPE!!

Fixing the street stopped more Grimm from flooding in to the city.

I really liked Nora getting first hit on the giant King Taijitu. Had a nice "Thor vs Midgard Serpent" vibe.

Team CFVE should be more powerful than team RWBY - Team RWBY seem to be the best first year team, but CFVE are at least a year ahead of them.

What? Well damn. Hey, to be fair, I only watched this episode once. In the theater. I will watch it again and report back. It was very weird the experience since I'd seen every other episode 3+ times, there was just this chunk of 16 minutes that came out of nowhere and I suddenly began to criticize instead of enjoy. I guess I went into my movie mode.

Know what? It feels like someone that's not Monty choreographed the first fight scene of the finale. It was so... gimmicky. Lacked impact. It was really weird. I felt it the first time and now the second time. Oh yeah, and the running theme with Sun and Neptune is that they're useless =P. Fun characters, but effectively useless. There was really just a lack of danger to the entire encounter. As far as I could tell, they contained the Grimm to like 2 blocks of the square they came out from. I was going to say that I wasn't even feeling the fight song but now that I'm at home I can see how I'll love it when the soundtrack is out. I just hope it contains more than the 5 songs with lyrics we've heard already. It's worrying especially considering a third of the vocals in S1 OST are remixes of the already existing trailer songs. The meta-joke of Velvets weapons made me chuckle hard though. "Come on, you spent all of last semester building that up, don't waste it here". Now that I see, Glynda really did fix the hole stopping the Grimm to come back, that's kind of paltry for what she can do. The whole encounter was not proportionate to how much time we spent building it up. I'm glad this season had a ton of other more interesting plot threads, because the main one didn't pay off I wouldn't say.

Seriously though, when the second largest concerns Team RWBY has after that attack is "If we don't get extra credit for that I'll be seriously disappointed" and "A two headed snake literally crushed a bakery", there's something wrong with that (Yeah, I know Ruby is worried about it, but still). But, they did set up plot lines for (potentially) Blake and Yang during the last segment of the episode and that really saved it. Though, Ironwood gaining ground is worrying somehow. That specific thread takes too much energy for me to think through right now but I'm sure there's a lot of something if we were to look.

Know what? I've nailed down what this finale was missing. A big relief of emotional tension. When blake was "missing" there was drama that needed to be resolved and it got resolved. The heart to heart with Weiss and Blake and the emotional ending song really tied it all together. But, seeing Raven was pretty great. I'm so glad they decided to give us an amazing carrot to hold us over until August 2015... T_T.

---

X-Ray and Vav looks hella entertaining. Low cost to produce shows backed by good humour. especially good to see since the Red vs Blue bubble has definitely burst. But, they're going down other avenues hard and fast.

At this point, I think Cinder's plan involves the Vytal festival. We're all assuming Cinder downloaded something when she broke into Ironwood's office, but what if she uploaded a trojan? The breach got Ironwood assigned to security detail for the festival, and his army is almost entirely robots. I could see Cinder taking control of them.

Cinder pawn-sacrificed Torchwick in favor of Adam. Torchwick Redeption arc incoming? probably not.

I've said that Cinder was uploading and not downloading before...
I like that Torchwick thing. And he's in on it too so Cinder's plan has to do with Ironwood.
Also, Yang got ultra pissed once we saw Raven's face. Her eyes turned red and that scowl...

Eh, the finale was okay, but weaker than the Season's 1 finale, at least to me. The mob Grimm fights are definitely the most lackluster in terms of choreography and any sense of suspense. Although, I think the first Season did those better, e.g. Yang's trifle with the Grim in the forest compared to what she did in the finale.

One aspect I kinda found disappointing is Jaune's current stage of development, still too much room to develop his arc. Which may or may not take time away from the new characters and even current side characters development time in the next season. Then again... this is a 12 episode /season series with only 12-15 minutes average screentime.

Throwaway characters for the sake of varied action scenes is acceptable if said scenes were speculator or even just good, which this finale contain nothing of either. Still look forward to the next season, all in all.

As an episode, it was alright, as a season finale, it was shit. It didn't even feel like one. No payoff. No resolution. Just more questions to be asked.

And I had a complaint earlier about the Grimm and how the show says that they are extremely dangerous, but we never actually see how dangerous they are. That complaint still stands. These Grimm got handled by a bunch of teenagers. So scary.

It feels like a problem with the self imposed G ratedness of the show.

Maybe I would have cared about the events unfolding on screen if some of the normies had gotten impaled or trampled, to at least make a token effort to convince us the monsters exists as more than fodder to make characters look cool.

The finale felt more like a mid season arc ending to me. It ended up happening a lot differently compared to what I expected 4 or 5 episodes ago.

Still there are some interesting things to look forward to. Like
Adam's appearance and the mysterious swordswoman.

I liked it, but as most have said, it was not a good finale. If the last episode had been the finale, it would have been way better. But regardless, the fights were awesome, and the
Adam and mysterious lady(who looks so much like an older Yang!!!!!!) reveal has me super excited.

The former will definitely open up an interesting arc with
Blake.

It was a good season, I think we really need this type of development albeit a little slow this time around but is good for pacing and the next season.

When is season 3 releasing? I might bite later on and buy the 2 volumes on Amazon

The last 2 seasons launched in late July, although 3 might be a bit later with RTX being moved back to August this year.

Speaking of which, if you want Season 2, it's $15 on Amazon right now. I would highly encourage putting down that pre-order. Season 1 was $10 just a month ago too.

The more time they get to work, the better. Though, I don't know if I'll be able to make it in August =| I'll do my best though!!

Monty's been tweeting a lot about R&D for season 3. It's mostly been abstract stuff about developing animation tools, but here's a post where something tangible is shown:

They'll be using some form of subdivisional surface tool to round out the characters in volume 3, getting rid of all the low-poly corners that normally show up in close-ups.
