Omaha |OT| We Swear We're More Than the College World Series

Thank you, Alabama for hiring yet another one of our hated coaches. Maybe UCF baseball can at least get back into regional contention in the near future.

I never would have guessed Gaf had an Omaha OT, thought I was the only person that lived here that also likes playing/talking about games. That's hyperbole, but I'm still surprised.

Omaha has a huge gaming/nerd/tech community, it's just not very visible because Seattle/SanFran/Portland are the cities people associate with that.

Seriously, I was in a smallgame engine development community. There was roughly maybe one, or two people in each city. There were 12 of us from Omaha. We didn't even know each other before, either.

Apparently Benson is full of pokemon go people. I hate this app so much already.

Edit:

Not sure I ever asked, but do any of you go to any of the local game stores for board games, miniature games, mtg, etc? New one called Sparta opened up on Maple recently, and they serve beer. I've been down there most Saturdays playing a variety of stuff.

I go to Spielbound pretty often, especially for trivia on Wednesday. It's pretty awesome. Also serves beer and makes a legitimately passable chai tea.

Oh, I have a bit of time off, so if someone wants to go to Henry Doorly Zoo or Fontenelle with me for to do a bit of walking around and casual hiking around or just looking at stuff - I have a membership for both of them that lets you bring in another person for free - send me a PM. Monday or Tuesday for this week. Or same time next week.

You can either meet me at there or I can come get you.

edit: also there is a s h i t t o n of people playing Pokemon Go in this city

I live in Morton Meadows and I saw around ten people duking it out for the Holy Cross Church gym yesterday. It's nice to see people out but they're all on their phones.

Yeah, nearly everyone I know has been playing. I guess the new baseball stadium is opening at night for a bit so people will stop hopping the fence to get some pokemon in there there.

When is the new zoo stuff going to be finished? I've kinda been waiting for that.

It's all in the Master Plan on their site but all the dates constantly push back due to funding timing. I think the current wave of stuff is supposed to be done by Fall? A lot of the new exhibits are already visitable and populated.

So it seems their shuttle plan isn't working then?

The shuttle was stuck in the line.

It seems it'd only worth for the southern line, which was mostly Nebraska plates. The northern line (coming from the interstate and highways) was 99% out of state plates, and they probably aren't gonna drive past the zoo to get to the zoo.

Dunno if they need to more heavily advertise the shuttle, or somehow get a dedicated shuttle entrance.

As a seasoned zoo patron... that shit is terrible on weekends. We have passes, so I refuse to get there before like 3:30 on a weekend day.

It looked faster just to park somewhere nearby in South O and just walk in.

Did they finish the new Africa area? We went a while back and it was under construction so we missed all those animals.

Some of the trees in my neighborhood look mopey. All the foliage at the top is just drooping like the tree is even more depressed with the weather than me.

My AC can't even keep up with the heat. It will be going nonstop and the temp will still creep into the 80s in my living room in the late afternoon

Soooooo happy we sold before summer. Our new house just had its windows and roof replaced. It onky gets to about 75 at its worst, even upstairs. In our old home we would have been roasting guaranteed.

When it's that bad I usually just set the AC higher so the coil won't freeze over but there's still dehumidification and some coolness

I'm just praying it cools down by tomorrow night. Got tickets for Weezer and I don't want to be melting the whole time.

I don't mind the heat, but the humidity makes my clothes grip to me too much. It's annoying. I'll be okay trading in humidity for more heat with my move, especially as I'll be ditching winter altogether (I'm seasonally affective aside from just hating cold).

That said, for now my AC is keeping it a lovely 76.

Apparently a house exploded in the Benson area killing one person, waiting to hear the cause still.

Not just a little explosion either.

Used to pass this house on my way to grade school everyday for years. I guess debris from the explosion blew out windows of my grade school over a couple blocks away, crazy. I guess police think something criminal might have taken place now.

Yeah, this is just three blocks from my childhood home. Kinda crazy. It has to be a gas leak.

Edit - Just finished reading your post about suspected criminal activity. Interesting.

Yeah, holy shit. Also those two neighboring houses are gonna need to be demolished. They both look like they sheared. That was a serious explosion.

edit: the one on the right is partially collapsed, the one on the left looks like it got blown thru all the way on the side.

edit: this one is fucked too

Weird I was here and Lincoln Thursday to Saturday. Reason: to see KISS Friday! My friend lives there and is finally done with school. It was a 9 hour drive one way.

It's been ruled an accident. Gas for the dryer was not properly disconnected.

http://www.ketv.com/news/firefighters-respond-to-housexexplosion/40872340

A tenant was moving from a home on July 23. One of the last items removed from the house was the clothes dryer, which was disconnected from the gas line supplying it by one of people helping with the move, so that the dryer could be taken from the home.

The gas line that supplied the dryer wasn't shut off, allowing natural gas to flow into the structure.

Saturday night, two men who had helped the tenant move went back to the home and noticed a natural gas smell. They notified the tenants.

The tenant notified the property management company of the situation by leaving a voicemail message on Clara Bender's work cellphone Saturday night. It isn't known if Bender received the message.

By Monday, when Bender entered the home, the natural gas had filled the residence. Investigators believe she was in the kitchen of the home when it exploded.
The gas and air mixed to a point where the atmosphere entered into an explosive range and came in contact with an ignition source, triggering the explosion.

That's just a series of tragic and somewhat stupid mistakes.

Moron #1 disconnecting a gas line without shutting it off.
Moron #2 not calling the actual gas company when she smelled gas.
Bender going into the residence at all. Assuming she got the voicemail, she had to know any potential gas leak had been going for at least 24 hours at that point. How did she not smell it the moment she opened the door?

Just feel bad for her family.

Ugh, Hillary's coming to Omaha and I'm having surgery tomorrow. Literally the worst time to come to Nebraska, Hill. :(

I'm hoping she makes a stop in Council Bluffs sometime before November.

I actually went to North High. That gym isn't very big. Unless it's been upgraded.. I've never stepped foot back in there after I left. I was like one of 7 kids from South O there, lol
