UC1 and MGS4 are definitely comparable (I'd say MGS4 just edges it out, but that's more of a personal preference thing), but saying UC1 'shits all over it' is just stupid hyperbole.

Saying KojiPro aren't a talented developer is silly. Every game they've made has been technically impressive for the time/platform they were released. 2008 is just a long time ago.

It's not like having to develop a 360 version at the same time would've made things any better though.

MGS4 isn't a technical marvel like Uncharted 2, but it's still a game of very high quality and exceptional attention to detail.
You can't be sure about that. The worst things about MGS4, disgusting chapter installs, isolated/decentralized online etc, are out right forbidden on 360. They'd have been forced to deal with those issues, not just duct-tape the whole thing together.

It could have ended up being better, or worse, we will never know.

Funny, I'd say claiming they are comparable is 'stupid hyperbole'.

No installs, very little perceivable loading.

Really the only thing MGS4 has over it is it's vsync'd. It's a shame ND didn't do that at the time.

Uncharted 1 might be better than MGS4 graphically, but MGS4 is arguably still unmatched to this day when it comes to polish and content. Polish and content probably being the main thing something like MGS gains from being exclusive.

I think character models are comparable. Specially the NPC's.

Comparing the two best looking games on the platform circa June 2008 is a fair discussion.

Saying one 'shits all over the other' isn't, it's dumb. Uncharted 3 shits all over the original Resistance, there's a huge technical gap between the two on the same hardware. MGS4 and UC1 are in a similar ballpark - thinking one looks better than the other is fair enough, but acting as though there's some massive gulf between them is stupid hyperbole.

yea MGS4 is a terrible looking game. And then there is the low frame rate and the stupid 10 minute installation. The game's engine was a complete failure and never used again. Anyone who defends it is a fool.

The polish of running in sub-HD with constant framedrops

And content? I'm not gonna get into that.

It looked pretty awesome to me. And one of the few big games to come out of Japan this generation without massive delays?

Been a while since I played MGS4 but aren't the environments way more open than Uncharted?

I'm waging this is legit on the sole basis that Open Ground Recon Endeavor being too ridiculous for anyone else other than KojiPro to have come up with it.

Character model and facial details. MGS4 wins. no competition.

MGS4 has 'attention to detail' and 'polish' that I'd only expect from Kojima Productions. It's very different to the 'attention to detail' and 'polish' of Uncharted, and a bit pointless to compare them.

Maybe the only AAA game to release this gen and never need a patch. Fills up a dual layer 50GB Blu-ray, big online mode (well, it used to be there.)

I swear to Zeus if I ever get an MGS thread without MGS 4 bashing......It will be a sight to behold.

No one is bashing MGS4, we are just saying how bad the engine was. I actually like a few acts in MGS4, I am looking forward to playing it again with the trophy patch and full installation option and so are most of the MGS fans.

That seems very unlikely.

98 - MGS1
01 - MGS2
05 - MGS3
08 - MGS4
10 - MGS:pW

That team is very regular. To wait for a PS480 install base that can break even on a forty million dollar investment with the popularity of MGS, MGS5 couldn't realistically ship till 2015 at the earliest. They can spend less and make more if they ship next fall on the current systems, and their pipeline should accommodate that.

MGS3 came out in '04.

I think it's dumb to think they're even close.

Yeah, my apologies. I was thinking about that after I posted it, and I didn't think it was the same year we saw MGS4.

Wait, so does this mean that Konami UK is indeed out of the loop?

Also, it gives credence that yes, this is REAL! :D

Or I might have interpreted that link incorrectly...

I wonder if Kojima will corporate with Naughty Dog lol. He did have a meeting/invatation with them. Kojima storyboard/Character model with Naughty dog technical prowess = games of games?

So anyway regardless of whether or not this is fake (thinking it's real personally), the confirmed artwork released previously seems to show a dog, who also made an appearance in the video showing off the new engine.

So....

- Game could be open world with some dog-related mechanics (Agro!)
- and video also showed a child, so maybe they play an important part (ala the Blood Diamond theory many have proposed)
- Blood Diamonds = money playing a major role = spending lots of time in the game managing and building resources / items / weapons.
- Expanding on all of the management stuff from Peace Walker.

yay speculation.

It's funny, TLoU could almost pass off as a Kojima game. Stealth Action with light focus on systems management.

He meets a lot of devs...David Jaffe, Dice, Naughty Dog, Sony's Ape Escape team (he did a collaboration with them because his son loved Ape Escape) but in this day and age? Probably not...maybe a minor collaboration

yea it really does look like MGS on steroids, I think it's obvious Naughty Dog got a lot of inspirations from the older MGS titles.

Zero Mission is okay. I'm not a huge fan of it.

I think remakes are the last bastion in the war against creativity. I'll never understand why people ASK for remakes. It's like they want developers to stop being creative. I guess that shouldn't be surprising. Fans constantly ask for sequels that are exactly the same as the last game.

I don't think remakes in video games are the same as in film or w/e. At least story isn't the principal reason to play games. There's still heaps of creativity in designing a new game based on the frame work of old.

Another one is Tomb Raider Anniversary. I didn't like the old Tomb Raider games, but rebuilding it with Tomb Raider Legend's gameplay made it a very entertaining game. And another one is Ys Oath of Felghana.

I'm not saying I'd take it over an original game, only that a remake wouldn't be so bad. Personally, I wouldn't want a new MGS either. Or at least make it unfamiliar and fresh.

Comparing Uncharted to MGS4 is stupid. The former renders a pretty corridor, the latter actually has decent-sized open environments with tons of actors.

This is a good way to put it. Like the water in MGS4 -- some people may not even encounter it, but there's a ton of unique implementation work in that.

haha apparently the meeting was more about ND getting tips for The Last of Us.
Wouldn't surprise me, that team's accessible stealth mechanics added to UC2 felt like they came from the MGS school of stealth above anything else.

Utter bollocks. There are underground sections near the end of UC1 that in scale rival anything in MGS4.

MGS4 has vastly superior art direction to Uncharted, its cinematics at their best are also still as good as anything out there today.

ND are very good at performance capture and general direction but they lack the cinematic flair that KojiPro shows during their highspot moments. Just check out the direction of say the Beauty and the Beast trailer, a sequence lifted practically verbatim from the game itself.

Anyone who says MGS4 is a "terrible looking game" deserves nothing but scorn. There are no excuses for that sort of hyperbole, especially when there are so many artistic positives about the presentation.

Yea that what I noticed as well. The combining of ingredients in the tlou reminds me of some similarities in mgs 3. In addition, the stealth aspect, focus on system management and having a heavy plot. Anyway I agree with @Sniper that a collaboration is very unlikely.

yep, and it was a bad port.

Not really. It had slowdown during the rain scenes, which the PS2 version had as well. The PS2 version of Substance slows to an absolute crawl during some parts of sneaking through the Holds and also climbing up the ladder for the Thermal Goggles/USP Suppressor.

Otherwise, it was just missing Skateboarding.

Sorry, I completed both games and you are wrong. Just draw a map of the areas in question, the possible traversal paths and existing active actors at any point in time and you will see.

MGS4 is barely any more open than UC and has itty bitty little chunks of zones separated by load zones. UC's "corridors" are loaded with detail and have tons of vistas and battle arenas and large rooms, it just annihilates MGS4.
