Was there a reason given for why it took so long? I recall there had been issues with Zelda 2 at the time (as I read about that problem in Nintendo Power) but I don't remember anything said about Mario 3.

What were the issues with Zelda 2?

One of my all time favorite childhood memories is playing Mario 3 in 2-Player with my mom when I was, say, 5 or 6. Some of the levels were too hard for me so my mom had to do them, especially the level with the angry looking sun, which I was genuinely scared of.

Still the best Mario ever, and a title than defined what gaming even meant to me. Legendary status.

Wikipedia states a ROM chip shortage and avoiding a conflict with the release of Super Mario Bros. 2 in the US (Oct 9, 1988).
