Attention, candidate!
You have chosen, or been chosen, to enlist as a potential recruit for a multi-national military task force intended to investigate, interdict and engage an enemy of unknown origins. Should you choose to accept such a posting, please respond to this initial communiqué within
days with a !SIGNUP notification.
As this initiative will be dealing with global security issues of the highest priority, it and all information relating to it has been designated [COSMIC TOP SECRET] in all jurisdictions. No information may be released to non-authorised personnel or organisations without prior clearance. Heavy civil and criminal sanctions apply.
There is a certain amount of risk involved with participation in the recruitment process, and – should your application succeed – with participation in the task force itself. Analysts currently predict casualty rates of 70-80% for field personnel (significantly lower rates apply to non-combat staff). While financial compensation and other programs are offered to the friends and relatives of those who fall in the line of duty, the extremely high likelihood of critical injury or death should be fully understood prior to application.
Aside from military personnel, we are also accepting limited applications for the following positions:
Office of the Director of Operations
United Nations
Combat Unit
/
/20
“VIGILO CONFIDO”
NB. All prior directives issued by this office are hereby rescinded.
---
ADDITIONAL NOTES --- ///CLASSIFIED TOP SECRET/// --- STRICT PENALTIES APPLY
NB. The Director of Operations would like to acknowledge the efforts of Director GuavaMoment, Director McNum and especially Director Fishman and Director Beaglerush for their inspiring performances in the defence of Earth.

This is a screenshot Let’s Play for XCOM: Enemy Within with the Long War mod, version Beta 15b. This changes standard XCOM gameplay into something a little closer to X-Com/UFO Defence circa ’94, making it more challenging, more punishing, and therefore even more FUN™.
Because I’m a baby, I’m playing on Classic difficulty Honestman (Long War is still a bit buggy, so I’m not taking any chances with the saves) with Second Wave options: Cinematic Mode (+15 to hit for XCOM at ground or in air) and Commander’s Choice (Select class of soldiers) and some ini mods to make the game a little easier (or less bullshit, depending on where you stand). Doesn’t matter too much. This is Long War, we all gonna die anyway. I’m not playing totally blind but I’m not Beaglerush either so shit’s probably gonna go bad.
Gangplank and Progeny are disabled because I don’t particularly like them and they throw off the emergent game behaviour a little.
Here’s a list of .ini modifications that with any luck have been properly implemented and will not break the game too badly:
- Arc thrower chance increased by 33%; roughly 70% at 1hp, 50% at 2-3 hp
- Interceptor max repair time reduced by 33%
- Interceptor re-arm time for alien weapons decreased to 5 days
- Terror mission panic per civilian killed reduced by 50%
- EXALT base health reduced to 3, because fuck EXALT
By the way, Long War completion time is usually estimated at >100 hours, so we might be here for a while.
