Sony Pre-TGS 2014 SCEJA Conference - Wait we're in Japan? [Over]

Would be nice
But I feel like they are looking to a slim+ffxv relaunch already

That would be huge.

FFXV and KH3 have more system selling power across the world than any other title (other than maybe GT6 and GTA VI).

The hype when those games near their release will be immense. They've been cooking for a decade. Sony better market those two games to the Japanese market; they're goldmines.

My Predictions

Hot Shots Golf (Move and Morpheus Support)
Gravity Rush 2 (Moved to PS4 with a bigger budget)
Gravity Rush Redux (enhanced port for PS4)
Ultra Street Fighter IV
Japanese PSN Indie games
Vita is still dead :(

They can't afford to not support Vita in Japan, they have to show stuff for it, even if its all third party.

Sony needs to blow their Japanese load on Monday if they want PS4 to succeed. They can't afford to hold anything back like they have before. Go big or go home.

For Japan they need to show all they have, they have no incentive to hold things back since the console just isn't selling there. Being successful in Japan would help PS4 a lot.

They can and they are doing it.

Yoshida said that this will be another PS4 conference.

I'm expecting a trailer for PSNova and some multiplatform announcements.

The Vita is selling much better than PS4 in Japan and will probably keep doing this for the foreseeable future, no point on abandoning it there.

I think they're aware of this, so depending on what they show at TGS we'll get a good idea of just what the company is capable of doing in terms of garnering third-party support for the system, as well as possible first-party titles.

The Vita is selling much better than PS4 in Japan and will probably keep doing this for the foreseeable future, no point on abandoning it there.

The problem with this is that it's easier to get a system going in one area than a bunch of areas. PS4 works everywhere else, Vita doesn't.

It's selling better in Japan than anywhere else, but it's still a distant second place to the (itself underwhelming) 3DS.

Japan in general is a wasteland for hardware sales. Sony's better off prioritizing the West, even if it means cutting off their only mildly successful market for Vita, so I'd expect nothing new from first-party except GR2 and SS2, a couple cross-platform announcements from Koei-Tecmo and Namco, and the usual filler from NIS and the like.

Killzone Mercenary was Vita's last hurrah in the West, and Phantasy Star Nova will be its last hurrah in Japan.

This isn't actually true though! Third party games still exist. PS Nova the last hurrah in Japan? Nope.

And there are more hurrahs coming to the west. Just because Sony has shifted focus doesn't mean third parties have too.

How about a big surprise...

Localization of God Eater 2!

...please? :(

What does that have to do with a Japanese event?

What's left other than indies and the embarrassingly late to the party Minecraft? EA, Ubisoft, Take Two, Activision...all gone. Vita doesn't even get obvious ports like Geometry Wars or Bioshock's mobile edition.

When I meant last hurrah, I meant AAA games, not literally the final game. Not a single Western title on the horizon fits that bill except for Minecraft arguably (barebones as the port is shaping up), and with Capcom, Square-Enix (Chaos Rings aside), and Konami on the sidelines, only Namco and Koei-Tecmo are left to pick up the slack with their cross-platform ports. SEGA is so wildly inconsistent that Phantasy Star Nova was a shock, and it's the only 400k+ seller left to be released in that region.

EDIT: Don't tell me that Icewind Dale of all things just crashed GAF...

Oh, okay. I understand what you're saying now, and I agree that as far as AAA western games go, Vita has had it's last hurrah already.

But there's still more to come from Japan.

Yes, Phantasy Star Nova should clear 300k and Soul Sacrifice 2 should clear 200k.

Meanwhile, PS4's already had a number of million sellers after less than a year in the market.

I hope it's obvious why Sony's ignoring Vita, because no rational argument justifies devoting any time or money to it.

Hoping FFXII Remaster gets announced. A PS4 version would be nice. Not sure what Square's TGS history is though to know if there's any real chance of this happening there.

Ok can somebody tell me what's going on with Neogaf today?

For the last 20 minutes, I've been getting errors and the site is still slow at the moment. Has there been a big announcement or something? 0_0

Scheduled maintenance was the message I received.

With Kingdom Hearts 2.5 and FF Type 0 in the way for later this year and next year respectively I don't see how Square would show a thing about KH3 and FFXV during this TGS.

I think FF Type 0 is a given but any kind of new footage concerning either of those two anticipated titles before E3 2015 is wishful thinking.

Can't wait for Ys 8, 60 fps on ps4 would be glorious. The good news for me is Sony is going to localize most of these JP games in Chinese at Taipei Game Show lol.

How long has Hiroshi Kawano been president of SCEJ? Best I can tell it's at least 4 years, wonder if there's anything with him stepping down the day before the conference?

It's because they're finally unleashing The Last Guardian on the world.

"My work here is done," Kawano muttered as he walked soberly into the sunset.

I like that theory better than mine. :) I was thinking something along the lines of SCEJ made a deal he didn't like with a third party. Or just an odd coincidence.

I agree. They need to showcase their wares to kickstart PS4 sales in Japan. A big Japanese developers show of force, both 1st & 3rd parties.

Here are my predictions:

1st Party Showcase:
- Gravity Daze/Rush (PS4, Holiday 2014) [PS4 port with new stuff]
- Gravity Daze/Rush 2 (PS4/PSV, 2015)
- Soul Sacrifice Delta (PS4, Holiday 2014) [PS4 port with all DLC & some new stuff]
- Soul Sacrifice 2 (PS4/PSV, 2015)
- Bloodborne (PS4, Early 2015) [trailer showcasing multiplayer?]
- Hot Shots Golf (PS4, Late 2014/Early 2015)
- Gran Turismo 7 (PS4, 2015)

3rd Party PS4 Showcase:
- Capcom: Deep Down (PS4) [although, they did just show off some stuff]
- Konami: MGS5 (PS4) & maybe something Silent Hills (PS4) related
- Sega: Yakuza 0 (PS4/PS3) & maybe some new Sonic game
- Atlus: Persona 5 (PS4/PS3)
- Namco: The Idolmaster (PS4) & Mobile Suit Gundam (PS4) [both teased at last years TGS]
- Square: Final Fantasy XV (PS4) [finally with lots of gameplay! and a 2015 release date! or maybe a trailer with seconds of new footage]
- Montage stuff showing off Japan developed announced PS4 games (like Residen Evil HD, Psycho Break, Guilty Gear Xrd, Dragon Ball, Samurai Warriors, etc)

I think contractually they may have to showcase Destiny again. Every time they have a conference, they bring the game out.

Kept my predictions boring/potentially realistic, as opposed to wishing for something crazy and be disappointed. I doubt all of that shows up, but enough of it should.

Square showed a new KH III video at the same time they announced KH II.5.

I disagree - I think the Japanese are absolutely crazy for VR tech, and Morpheus is their way out if the doldrums in Japan. it doesn't have to be a wasteland for hardware sales there.

I heard from my friend in Tokyo with a rumor of DQX for PS4.
Not sure how reliable is but I would actually hope it is true.

That's awfully optimistic. Morpheus will likely be an expensive add-on to an already expensive console.

When has a non-pack in peripheral ever made a huge difference?

I'd like it to be, but hasn't Capcom being revealing console REs on Microsoft panels for the last couple of releases?

Pretty sure they've never done that. RE5 was revealed at some fan event, if I recall. RE6 has a dedicated unveil event of it's own.
