Sentai covers and advertising for shows are typically pretty bad. The play up the sex, give bad titles, and are just terrible in general.

People keep saying this, but what titles have been changed like that? I still cant think of any. At least not any that I own.

Didnt Zettai Karen Children become Psychic Squad?

psychic-squad-part2-dvd.jpg

I need to see this, and this particular name change is very understandable given how sue happy the US is.

That's fair enough, it's just when people complain about that stuff, I just instantly think of Cat Planet Cuties, which was actually Funimation!

But that is a PERFECT name for it!

Um, it is a joke. I was just explaining the aspects you're missing. Why someone would choose that kind of awful design to parody a sentai cover. Sure, it won't be that bad, but it'll likely trade on some of the worst things to get sales.

I honestly just know of their more infamous examples, which is why people make fun of them. I feel like sentai's been getting better in general as time goes on so it wouldn't surprise me if they've gone with better titles lately.

Again, what are these supposed titles that were changed so drastically?

Unsolved Fishteries: Just When You Thought It Was Safe to Bro Back in the Water: The Scheme-a in Enoshima.

And this is why AnimeGAF needs to pool its resources and open an anime licensing company.

We would drive a licensing company into the ground so quickly...

Usagi Drop 1

Kinda a shame that this is kinda gonna hover like a cloud over my viewing of the anime, especially since the makers of the anime had the good sense not to do this (right?). Of all the ways you could end this kinda story...WHY?!

That manga is just fan fiction, pay it no mind.

I just went through my whole collection of Sentai licensed stuff and they did not mess up a single title. They even got Yoake Mae yori Ruriiro na pretty much correct by calling it "Brighter than the Dawning Blue". They actually don't seem to mess with titles unless its something that would be a blatantly bad name, like Zettai Karen Children.

Of course, the same couldn't necessarily be said about their forebarers ADV Films, as my copy of Grrl Power! can attest to.

bad gameplay lol
Kotoura-san 7

Aside from yet another instance of
Grandpa lusting over Kotoura, ewww
, this was a great episode. I loved
Moritani's pixelated thoughts
and Kotoura's reaction. :lol

Next week looks good too. Can't wait!

They even have the sense to keep MayoChiki named as such.
Akikan was called Akikan. Ikoku Meiro no Croisee was called Croisee in a foreign labyrinth.

The Japanese people I know got angry at me when I told them the manga ending was disgraceful and disgusting. I thought there would be a universal revulsion to it, but apparently it seems to be cultural.

I really doubt most Japanese people would be okay with the fan fiction manga.

I pretty much lost my desire to start a licensing company at the point that Sentai Filmworks licensed and released Xenoglossia. I mean, there's clearly nowhere to go from there but down, so why even bother trying?

Sentai has licensed some very low profile series (like the aforementioned Brighter than the Dawning Blue and Croisee) and I wonder how much it really costs these days to license shows like that. It cannot be a lot. Like how many copies of akikan probably sold? My copy and two others?

Such a weird OP change. The new piano track definitely doesn't sound like it fits with anything else on the OP. Anyway, more betrayals and crazyness. The beginning of the episode felt so odd in tone and made little sense too. I guess it's meant to be fanservicey comedy but it really felt out of place. Especially all the tsun.

I was pondering whether to post this or not because I didn't want it to sound like I was criticizing people merely for feeling culture-shock, but I'll second Moral Panic's post that the ending to Usagi Drop isn't controversial amongst Japanese readers. You'll be hard-pressed to find any "omg eww" reactions on the Japanese side of the net. Keep in mind also that this is a regular mass-market women's comic with a live-action movie with a nationwide theatrical release, not some kind of niche otaku thing.

I'm not put off by Usagi Drop's ending either so I always feel like an alien on this topic on English forums. I did grow up in the U.S. but I guess it's just a matter of what cultural artifacts you happen to absorb.

Not taking a stance either way, but have you read the manga ending or do you just know what happens?

That's what happens when you teach "The Tale of Genji" in schools. It has a really similar plot point.

Keep in mind the MGX BD's aren't even uncensored. lol

At first I thought they were simply sticking to the no-nipple style of the manga, but I heard they left the shadows on in episode 11--is that true? I'm having a hard time finding BD screenshots.

Yeah, they did. It's pretty weird though as they did the exact opposite for the first episode.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

The film that, for many of us, first brought Mamoru Hosoda into the spotlight, is also arguably his best. The more I watch this, the more I appreciate the carefully layered character development, foreshadowing, cinematography, and some of the best editing you'll find in an anime film. Other than that one scene, it's an impeccably directed film from start to finish. There's always some new nuance to appreciate, some subtlety in the extravagant and elastic animation that you didn't notice before.

Watching these works in chronological order, it's quite apparent how much digital technology has advanced, and how Hosoda has improved his use of them. The scene where Makoto first leaps uses some really interesting stylized animation that I haven't seen anywhere else; I'm not sure how much of it is 3D versus traditional animation. I also really like the more subtle use of CGI when
time freezes
.

Another detail I thought about this time was the repeated use of a towering cloud as visual symbolism. There are some obvious thematic connections to the story if you think about it; clouds are ephemeral and transient, so there's an element to them that signifies inevitable change, or mono no aware, which makes their prominence in Makoto Shinkai's films understandable. But clouds are also something we cannot grasp or reach, or control; in this way they can represent the unseen future or even time itself. So it's only fitting that
the film ends with Makoto gazing at the clouds as she makes peace with her time spent with Chiaki and the future that awaits her
.

I think that one thing that contributes to the film's instant masterpiece status is the number of scenes that immediately feel iconic. There's the two
bike on the train crossing
scenes, which make masterful use of editing, sound design, and animation to create truly memorable setpieces. There's also the scene where Makoto first learns how to time leap, with the skipping stone, the scene where
time freezes
, and of course the penultimate scene and the
faux kiss
. There's a certain power to a finely-crafted story told within the confines of a feature-length film; you run the gamut of emotions from laughing to crying, and you feel like know the characters personally after a brief ninety minutes together. Such a remarkable movie.

Your impressions are spot on. I've seen this movie three times now and I enjoyed it thoroughly every time. May need to watch it again soon (although I think I'm going to check out the live action version). My absolute favorite element to this story is that Chiaki uses
his leaps to come back in time to see a painting. A painting! He isn't using it to save the world, or satisfy some kind of larger personal agenda. He just wants to see a painting that makes him happy.
It may sound unimportant, but that shit is real. It's much more telling of a person's character, and what they are made of, than any sort of frivolous back story or needless character building.
