Nintendo Direct 5/17 4PM CEST, 7AM PST, focus on First Party Wii U Summer Titles

NoA needs a slap in the head.

EVERY SINGLE GAME is coming out at least a week+ later than in other regions, some games even months. WHY?!?!
A week+? Listen, I'm sitting here with my Japanese Wii U still waiting for Trine 2, still waiting for Toki Tori 2 and The Cave, still waiting for Lego City, and Sonic Racing and Little Inferno are just never coming out. I'm not saying Japan has it worse, I'm saying region locking SUCKS.

This announcement isn't over right? I'm looking over the 1st page of gaf and I can't imagine the thread titles I am seeing being all this public direct was about.

Bet on 3D Mario and Mario Kart instead. Unless things have changed (which I'd say is possible), Super Smash Bros. won't be playable at E3.

Didn't Brawl have a playable E3 demo before its release? I know it had several conference demos in various places, which might have included E3?

And anyway, 3D Mario and Kart are pretty close to as exciting as Smash 4. I'm just stoked that the average consumer will have a chance to try them out. Here's hoping they release downloadable demos on the eShop later down the line, ala the Rayman Legends demo...

The almost complete lack of content coming to WiiU. I guess they are saving that small morsel of goodness for E3.

What were you expecting when very title of this thread says "focus on first party Wii U summer titles"? I'm surprised we even got Sonic announced now rather than at E3.

Sounds like a very disappointing Direct. Winderful 101 is too far away.

It wasn't, we got 3 megatons in the first 10 minutes, we got more than what we thought it would.

It's just some people thought this would be the E3 Direct when it was confirmed yesterday that we will get the E3 Direct right before E3 starts.

ya they announced two at once, next one is before E3

I see they are again reiterating that we will see Mario. Is that at E3 or the next Nintendo Direct?

These things are starting to get depressing.

What Megatons? I must have missed something.

This Direct was exactly what it said it would be, a Direct about titles coming out in Q3. Heck we even got a surprise with Sonic Lost World.

Anybody who expected more has only themselves to blame. Or has to take reading/comprehension lessons, which ever suits him or her.

Then why bother having a announce at all.

What do the NPD numbers have to do with Nintendo updating release dates of some of their titles via a video format with gameplay footage vs a press release? None of that argument is relevant when Nintendo's most important Direct of the year is literally around the corner. If E3 was in 5 months, we'd have an argument. But not in this case.

Again -- and I don't know how I can make this any more clear -- I'm not suggesting that one should expect big news to come given that the description for the event didn't suggest anything exciting, and given that E3 is right around the corner. I get that. But what I also get is that Nintendo Directs do carry with them some expectation of being eventful, whether that's realistic or not. And given the current predicament, I don't think it's necessarily worth pointing and laughing at people who are hopeful for some surprises.

Perhaps it's more realistic to wait for E3. And that can be noted. But I do think there's a difference between that and "I can't believe you naive idiots expected anything from this! Can't you read!?" The NPD mention was just brought up to suggest that -- on the heels of unprecedentedly awful sales figures -- one might think that they may use this platform to distract in a more significant manner than "here are a few release dates for summer games."

But, as before, we're waiting for E3. Which is fine. But I just don't think it was profoundly absurd to think that there was a chance for this Direct to be more eventful.

- Three game Sonic deal
- Sonic Lost World
- Sonic & Mario at Sochi
- New Super Luigi U release date(s)/price(s) + announcement of standalone retail version
- Oracle of Ages/Seasons launch discount
- Yakuza 1+2 HD coming to Wii U (Japan only so far)
- The Wonderful 101 release dates
- Game Gear games finally being released in earnest on 3DS outside Japan

I think that's pretty much it

What Megatons?

Yakuza 1+2 Wii U - Reasons why it's a megaton is it's the first time the series is going to another platform other than PlayStation and now opens the possibility of the next entry for Wii U as well as PS4.

Sonic: Lost Worlds - Sonic is exclusive to Wii U and Nintendo and Sega announced a worldwide partnership

Mario and Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games - Which I guess it isn't a big megaton since we all knew it would happen, but nobody thought it would be announced today

Locking up the very important Sonic demographic will save the Wii U for sure

Something tells me you don't know what megaton is.

Showing Retro's next game is a megaton. Those three you mentioned aren't. Maybe the Sonic exclusivity deal, but that's about it.

Then why bother having a announce at all.

To get the summer titles out of the way now before E3 and to announce the Best Buy partnership.

Didn't the Wii have a couple of exclusive Sonic games? Not exactly sure how a couple more is a "megaton". More of a "meh-gaton"
I don't really thngk the game itself is a megaton(though the deal itself probably is) but everyone is acting like it is.

Pretty much what I expected. Nice that we got a release date for W101, but disappointed its rather far away. Only thing I was hoping out of this ND was maybe some new VC news on gba or something.

There are different kind of megatons, these are smaller megatons but still big enough to make a trend on twitter.

Edit: Just noticed I put the Mario and Sonic game as a big megaton, I meant to say "I guess it isn't a big megaton since we already knew about it, but nobody thought it would be shown today"

Sorry, my bad.

Pretty much. Sonic is a good surprise!

It more like: "Hey, Sonic fans! Pro tip: If you want to play a few Sonic games you maybe should consider buying a Wii U" also: "Dear, Yakuza fans, have you heard your beloved franchise is now playable on a Nintendo platform? Yes, that is right! Yakuza. On a Nintendo Platform."

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Lets see how my old prediction goes:

June - Game & Wario
July - Wii Party U
August - Pikmin 3
September - The Wonderful 101

October - Super Mario 3D U, Wii Fit U
November - The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD
December - Mario Kart U, Bayonetta 2

heh

The only news that can be considered big here is the Yakuza 1 and 2 HD coming to WiiU. Even then the series future titles might not be put on WiiU if the edition bombs which I have nod doubt it will as most the Yakuza fan base is on PS.

Surprised there was no Flipnote Studio 3D.

Wasn't disappointed, though. We got the new announcements, we got release dates, we got new game footage. All pretty good. Not all Nintendo Directs are historic like that January one or the recent 3DS one.

Oh man, that January one...

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
I wonder if Wii Fit U is going to be held until this holiday as Nintendo's big casual game.

The only game left from the original launch window without a date.

Why is New Super Lugi U available stand alone retail but dlc only as download.

This is another example of dumb Nintendo being dumb. There is no reason to make this more complicated. Just make it a standalone game all around. Done.
