1upshow (Zelda review)

She kept going on about the graphics and the Wii being underpowered, and how she's dissapointed with the Wii's graphics.. BUT IT'S A ****ING GC GAME! Admittedly, the Wii is not *much* more powerful, but still.

Yeah, it's confusing, but this is going to be an ongoing problem with people reviewing Wii games. They're gonna go from Xbox 360 and PS3 games to something on Wii and be totally put off by the graphics. That's just how it is. The industry is driven by state of the art visuals, moreso than anything else.

At this point, I really don't care. Aslong as they objectively review every other facet of the games, I'll make do with them calling the graphics shit.

By the way, what's Luke's opinion on the game? He's sold on the waggle? Did I hear that correctly?

I don't really know how I feel about it yet. Everyone complains about the game's opening segments -- which is 7 hours in, all I've seen (taking a copy home when I leave the office today to play for the rest of the weekend) and I don't feel like games should necessarily get a pass on the first 10 hours or 18 hours or whatever because it "gets really good later, I swear" -- because like I've said before, no one would sit through a game for 10 hours that didn't grab them if it didn't have an IP like Zelda behind it, so then it becomes an investment on good faith and I'm wondering if that investment of time on good faith ultimately leads to overpraising the rest of the game as a result of some kind of justification for the pure mundanity of the game's opening.

Like I said, I don't really know how I feel about this one, yet. I fully want it to be great, though. I love Zelda, but I'm not willing to give it a pass because it's Zelda, either.

I think this is indicative of a greater problem with Zelda in general, and once I've played enough of the game to know for sure, I want to write about it. These are great points, though.
Awesome, I look forward to the retaliation on gaf

Like I stated before, I enjoy the 1Up Show. I enjoy the skits and even though they feature two game franchises I don't like (Halo and Zelda) on every show, I still watch it. There's just this certain cast member that really should stay behind the camera.

I understand what you're saying but this is'nt even a Wii game, graphically. Does she not know this?

I didn't like Kathleen as a game critic much either, back when she worked for 1up, and when she left for IGN she became worse I think. I remember hearing her on the IGN podcast (which in itself is pretty crappy), and maybe it was the general atmosphere that seemed to be going on with that podcast, but I couldn't stand her constantly interrupting people who had something worthwhile to say, just to make a lame joke. Several times over.

But I have to say I think she's better now since she returned to the 1up show. A bit more humble and with more interesting things to say. So she doesn't really annoy me anymore, which is obviously a good sign.

I'm sure she does, but even though Zelda is technically a Gamecube game, it still looks better than any of the other Wii launch games.

Dude, the other Wii launch games are a nearly absurd comparison -- they aren't really "games" they are glorified, overpriced demos. Be realistic, here.

Why? Because i pointed out the bullshit that has been flying ever since the reviews hit? Give me a break.

It doesn't get a pass though. It's slow-paced, but it's still more creative, fun, well-designed, story-packed and beautiful than most games out there. It doesn't get a "free pass" later on because of the start.. it's a testament to the game that it 1ups itself from the start to the end, a great start is followed by a fantastic mid-section and an amazing final half.

Tell me this but, I bet if your opinion changes you'll find it hard to suddenly come out singing it's praises due to the ammount of stick you'll no doubt get at the office, so would you even be honest?

He was honest about Gears, which he had major reservations about before playing.

I don't really get any "stick" at the office. I beat the shit out of Viva Pinata everytime I saw it. When it arrived at my desk I laughed playing it for three hours. I have no problem having my reservations be completely obliterated by games delivering fantastic experiences.

Do you think the implementation of Wii control was done well? From what I've played, while interesting, the waggle seems largely pointless. Just a button mapped to some random movements. The aiming's nice, though...

Would've liked to seen a more minimalistic HUD as well...

I haven't played Red Steel yet, but I can tell from watching footage that it isn't going to do much for me. Seems like a game that needed an extra 6 months of development.'

But yeah, aside from a couple of games like Monkeyball and Trauma Center, the Wii launch games are garbage. However, I still feel Wii Sports is brilliant in what it sets out to do, tech demo or not.

Yep, I'm a Zelda fan, but I'm not a blind Nintendo fanboy. There is a difference.

I didn't agree with the poster going off on certain points before playing the game. There is a reason TP isn't being bashed for having a slow start, while an average game like Kingdom Hearts 2 did recieve complaints. You have to actually play the game to know why.

Points, yet you only manage to list one? A slow start, is a slow start. You would have a point if people were saying the start was slow in sections, but, they haven't been. My point still stands.

KHII was far from a garbage game >_>.

Mad props to luke for telling it like it is. Dunno how the average 1up critic works or how many of you gaffers do things but a game should only get 5% of it's total length or 2 hours whichever comes up first. I really could care less if zelda takes 70 hours to finish, if I'm not enjoying and and lord knows the first 30 minutes was the worst 30 minutes minutes of any zelda I've ever played aside from majoras mask, then why should I keep going ?

I've written off games in the past becuase nothing interesting has happened in the first 2 hours, dragon quest 7 anyone ? I never did get through that first dungeon area that leads to the past where you can finally fight some slimes. I wasn't having fun with the game at all so I gave up on it.

I hope to see lukes' opinion on this game in the near future.

What the **** is with the SOTC comparison? SOTC is not Zelda. It's not even Zeldaesque.

The games both have horses and bosses.

I suppose the beginning is slow considering how long it takes to get to the first dungeon, but I never felt like nothing was going on...

Kingdom Hearts 2 is complete trash, buddy and if that's the stupidest thing you've read on this board, you haven't read through many threads.

Yes, just like Kingdom Hearts 2 destroys Zelda in having a legitimate story that isn't reeking of pedophilia.

Now that's pretty stupid.

Zelda destroys SOTC it just does. I dont see that as bullshit...

Do you not understand why the comparison is complete bullshit?

Zelda ALSO destroys Madden, GTA, and Halo. So what?

SOTC is a fundamentally different style of game. The only similarities are epic boss fights, a horse, and a dude with a sword. The story and presentation of the two games aren't even remotely similar.

It's bullshit and I'd expect better from Shane. SOTC is no "fan made" game and it's almost an insult to Ueda. I've never smelt such bullshit from Shane, and that includes all his garbage about the game of E3 being Wii ****ing tennis.

Stop, just stop. The Zelda series is like the Metal Gear series, it's got sentimental value and people enjoy it, but at it's core it's a trashy game.

You're easily a somethingsomething-bot with personal issues, feeling safe enough throwing out heartfelt remarks such as "prick" and "nintenbot" - because you've got a nintendo-critical 1up-staffer to cling on to like sinners to Jesus. Prick.

It's better than I thought it would be. I genuinely like the Nunchuck shake for the spin attack. The sword slashing, I'm still not sold on.

No, actually i'm a nothing bot. I enjoy good games. My favorite games last gen where Eternal Darkness, MGS3, Frequency and Kingdom Hearts 2. Him calling Kingdom Hearts 2 "trash" was undeserved and just plain silly.

I agree, but it's not annoying though. I mean it's still better than the regular controlling scheme of the WW.

Isn't sotc an action/adventure game? Swords and puzzles and all that jazz... just with a more limited focus?

I think that's what he was trying to say.. that this zelda encompasses all the things in sotc + lots of additional elements which made sotc seem like a side project or a fan made tribute game.

That's what i gathered from his comments. Haven't played this zelda yet, so i can't really agree/disagree with him. He may be going too far.

It's cool. I'm sorry I didn't enjoy Kingdom Hearts 2 and you are deserving of your opinion on Zelda. I edited my post to say average game instead of garbage, because you're right, KH2 isn't. It's too bad you happened to see it before I edited it, because I knew it would cause controversy with someone.
