One Piece is the 3rd highest selling comic of all time

Never got around to reading this one, I used to read all the comics (hehe) in Shonen Jump way back when but I'd always skip it. Now and then I want to get into it but then I see that there are now 800 chapters, so, yeah...

Your life should revolve around making this happen.

and also, remember that it's made by just one man, contrary to most of the other comics on the list that are a collective effort

I believe at least one of Oda's assistants has went on to do their own manga, so that isn't totally true. Even Toriyama had an assistant, and it was considered unusual that he didn't have more.

I can't watch the video but I wonder how accurate those figures are for the american characters. Like, do Justice League comics count for Batman and Superman? I also wonder where Tintin would rank.

Off all time I don't know, but he puts in perspective how little Superman/Batman comics (including all the side-ones) sell today compared to One Piece

Is that slump compared to Marineford or previous arcs? I ask because Marineford was a climax point whose plot details made the nightly news casts in Japan. Those sales and levels of hype will only be reached again when the series enters it's final climax.

the heights of the marineford period will never be reached for simple reason, there isn't gonna be another onepiece boom, not in japan at least.

during that period the series sold tons of tankobon because those were all NEW FANS that were hooked by the strong world movie and decided to go back and buy all the old volumes....now onepiece in japan is probably at the highest point in terms of user base, so there are not really that many people you can hook and sell old volumes to..but the new ones pretty much sell the same amount they did back then.

story comes from oda and oda alone

drawing it is a colective effort, that much much is true..although according to oda he personally draws anything that is in movement every week, that means that his assistants just do the backgrounds

that's also why in chapters where tons of people appear in the pages, they are usually shorter, since he has do draw each and every one of them

I should really get into one piece. Been told the anime isn't worth the watch and heard it hasn't finished and it's pretty long.

Every time I'm reminded of what a behemoth One Piece has become puts a smile on my face:

giphy.gif

arguments aside, it's the best piece of fiction I've ever read.

come at me.

I can't say that because people would rightfully crucify me and counter it with their own shit, but One Piece is certainly my favorite piece of media, I'll say that much.

^^^^ This Goda picture is incomplete without Togashi.
(and Kubo wished he was allowed to even touch Goda)

The best comic book is still HxH for me.
One Piece is really damn high, it's popular for a reason.
It's a great read piecemeal every week and it's a great read in volume form.
It's a bit slow at the start but only compared to the rest, it's a genuinely well-made piece of art.
I like it as much as I like stuffs like Godfather or Brother Karamazov.
It's just good.

I think he meant that the series is based on a sole creativity of Oda. Unlike say, Boku no Academia which is a collective effort of 3 people.

Buggy is awesome though!

It's Subpar Spatula.

Ugh. I guess I need to try it again. I got to the arc with Sanji's introduction and it felt like a slog. Backstory was cool though.

the testing arc for onepiece is IMHo the arlong arc, which is the one after the one you stopped at
if that also feels like a slog to you, don't bother with the rest

why?

i think the anime is worth, if you arent following it in weekly basis, just wait for it to have an arc completed and watch the arc
Simple characters with cringey "I am going to be the pirate king" while spouting friendship and tops it off with murder.

All over the place so I dropped it.

murder? lol

also LOL at "simple" characters, just because you didnt give it the time to be developed. it doesnt mean they are "simple"

I didn't really like Arlong Park though,
it's golden after though....and constantly even!

Wow just realized I haven't heard the name Asterix in a loong time.

It's because it's trash worse than the ending of Bleach since Goscinny died.
Uderzo tried making solo Asterix albums but they're trash not even worth using as toilet paper.

The series is actually pretty great for the reality checks it brings to the table at random moments and in interesting plays later on. Really like how it materializes that dynamic..!!

Have you ever considered picking up an actual book that doesn't come with pictures?

Like I spend enough time in the one piece and Dragonball threads that shouldn't go throwing stones in glass house, etc, but come on.
Wtf does this even mean?

Are you saying that comics can't be the best works of fiction because they have pictures and aren't novels???

That's really dumb.

Get to Water 7/Enies Lobby and then tell me it's not the best comic you've ever read.

I wish I was you. You're able to experience all this for the first time.

You are one arc away from Top 5 arc material in all of the manga, definitely should at least get that far!

Thanks, but I've actually heard that before. I think I popped into the OT and asked at which point I should decide it's not for me, and I was told Enies Lobby/Arlong Park/whichever the arc was next that I forget the name of.

I was just so burned out on it by the time Mihawk showed up that I couldn't get there though. But it's been a while, so I guess I should pick it back up when I get the opportunity.

I always laugh when people say the quality of One Piece has declined. The series has been consistently good since forever. Dressrosa and Cake Island are just as good as Water 7 and Marineford if not better. It's well-deserved for One Piece to reach this achievement. The fact that it's still so well-written after all this times is tear-worthy. Luffy is the king we need. I'm upset the anime isn't better

eh,depends

since the timeskip

fishman island
was mosly boring but had a godlike flashback
punk hazard
was fun but the resolution was a bit lacking
dressrosa
has tons of good stuff in it,but also tons of fat that could have been omitted to make the arc more enjoyable..but oda really wanted to make it an epic and long arc
zou
is incredible for how good it is in such a compact format
totland
arc has lots of good moments but it's also a plotholes galore

Pretty sure that first post was in jest, lol

Sometimes this comic can be some shonen-ass shonen, but I love the comradery between the main characters, the world building, the sometimes fairy tale esque character designs and most of all its humour. I'll be reading this weekly until the end

Also glad Astrix managed to get up there

Go with the manga. The anime pacing is shit. The intro sequence, previous episode recap, opening and ending always takes up most of the runtime.
The actual episode is like 10 minutes long at most.

Murder? Not for a prominent character, that's for sure. As for the friendship thing, well imo, One Piece is basically the cool, acceptable version of what Fairy Tail does. It does the whole friendship quite often, but it's never felt overly cheesy to me. But obviously that's subjective, so whatever.

Yea, just show a person Monster for example lol

Damn I love me some Luffy LOL.

You are absolutely correct though, One Piece is ingrained in my life.
I could talk about it forever.

Same.

Completely agree.

This and Hajime no Ippo are the two manga I bother keeping up with

I'm guessing they are also the two longest running besides Berserk

This was probably my favorite comic of all time up until recent arcs. Everything loses steam eventually, I guess.

That said, I genuinely enjoyed it up until the timeskip. Up until that point, all of its best qualities more than made up for the issues I had with it here and there. Recently, I feel like the worst parts of it are coming out more and there's less good stuff to make me go along for the ride.

That said, I highly recommend it to anyone, it's so compelling. Arlong Park, Alabasta, Enies Lobby, and Marineford are fucking awesome pieces of fiction that shouldn't be missed.

Comics are books. Just because it has artwork doesn't make it any less of a book than a text heavy novel. They both equally have the power to tell stories that resonate with people.
