Destiny Red Bull codes apparently had a ton of them compromised. The legend grows.

With the code being as easy to break as it was, I'm not surprised.

They screwed the whole promo, I expect the goodies will be unlocked for everyone now.

I don't like anything about this story.

-The content being exclusive to an energy drink
-That people were okay with such a practice and were paying for it
-That others stole codes from people who paid for it

It is my hope that this failure results in less emphasis on deals like this in the future or ideally the complete removal of such promotions.

I liked Destiny quite a lot when it launched last year. Regardless of all the problems the game had it was still the best option to play with friends. Since then Bungie listened to the community and implemented numerous fixes to the overall product making it better than it ever was before. With the Taken King expansion though it's just been one misstep after another and I really hope it's not indicative of the future of the franchise.

"Don't worry we're not making the same mistakes again"

"No, you're making all new ones"

It was a code that used 2 specific letters in every one and then a 6 digit combination of 3 letters. It was ridiculously simple. Their own fault.

E.G (it wasn't these letters or numbers) A code may be have AB123123 or BA123123 or 12BA1233 etc etc

LOL just because it was easy to take advantage of that exonerates the scammers completely? That is some piss poor logic.

Hey I'm all about screwing over the machine but these people were stealing codes from people who actually bought the cans.

Yeah this is my big issue with it. Its not like jumping on a pricing error and getting a good deal. This was legit stealing codes from people who were going to pay for the product. Big difference

Link to said thread?
If a mod want me to remove the link, I will gladly do it. I am not encouraging these type of actions, just answering his question..

They're going to ban everyone who used a fake code, right? Kind of like when game store employees get banned from Club nintendo for stealing the codes from new games.
From what I saw, it does appear whoever was openly posting "Here is X, Y, Z code" was ban. There was alot of gaf members opposing the thread and I am glad it was locked. Its a shame since the damage was already done.

edit: actually just gonna remove the link, since it does contain the information to figure out a code.

The sheer number of people defending this is just pathetic. Seriously. "But they made it so easy!" isn't a valid defense, legally or ethically. We're better than this, people. It was good that the GAF thread got locked but it was up for quite awhile. Not our proudest hour.

Regardless of one's feelings on stealing based on the hilariously stupid keygen technique, it's important to remember that actual paying customers got screwed over. The bolded is something everyone should be agreeing with, but it certainly still didn't stop people. This is also being a total dick with zero empathy for your fellow gamer. Don't people even have "if this happened to me, would I be pissed?" thoughts any more? Christ.

If it happened to me personally, I would probably laugh, wonder why I bought a Red Bull to begin with, drink the Red Bull, and regret drinking said Red Bull when I could've had water.

So this article has no new information? Just the same speculation that everyone was making the other day with no new facts?

lmao somebody in that red bull code thread was like "well this practice is totally anti consumer so fuck bungie and redbull!!!" and then potentially fucked over an actual consumer by using the code without buying a red bull

too funny lol

at least putting codes under the tab isnt as dumb as that doritos halo promotion where they were just printed right on the bag. like 3 of my friends went to 5 different stores and took pics on their phone of the entire doritos stock, one bag at a time. they had double xp for weeks.

My favorite post was likening stealing these codes to a buffet line. Two tiers existed for admittance to the buffet: one normal and one premium. The premium included shrimp, but the regular one didn't. (The shrimp is the code, by the way.)

He said that because the shrimp is in the buffet line and the buffet has no way to stop people who didn't pay for the premium tier from stealing the shrimp, some people who paid for the shrimp wouldn't be getting any.

He said that because some people are going to scam the system and leave paying customers without a working code, might as well scam the system too. He justified it by saying that one person isn't going to prevent the system from being scammed.

He sounded really unpleasant.

100% the company's fault...

"It's not my fault they made it easy for me to steal from strangers. Really, you could even say they stole the codes from their customers. I didn't do anything wrong."

Not saying you did or didn't take them, but come on guys. It's still theft, no matter how easy.

Judging by some reactions, Bungie killed their dogs and enslaved their families. The only way they could even get a minuscule sense of justice was to game the system. Bought a legit can and have an invalid code? Too bad! You are just an enabler of the wicked machine that is Bungie/Activision.

That would be a really stupid move to be honest. Why would you ban your customers who spent $60+ on your game over a really, really poorly though-out code generator, for some Red Bull tie-in? The thing was broken and people took advantage of it. It might not be the right thing to do but that's just what happens when you combine people with broken things that give you free stuff. I don't see how mass-bannings improve this situation.

Besides, I don't understand why people are overreacting so much, as if these people are "criminals". The mods posted a perfectly reasonable response and only banned the few people who actually posted codes.

I think at this point this thread is no longer appropriate for the forum. I have gotten PMs about the issue, and have discussed it further with other mods. While it appears this thread was initially given the go ahead, I think we might not have been entirely clear on the exact nature of the exploit. The codes being "generated" possibly invalidating those of legitimate customers does not sit well with me. While it might simply be an inconvenience to replace the codes, it is an inconvenience which should not be there in the first place. As such it does not feel right for us to encourage or condone an exploit of this sort, regardless of the legal grey area it lies in.

I seem to recall those codes being multiple use codes though, or am I remembering that incorrectly?

Sorry Bungie and Destiny, I love the game but sounds like the ball has really been dropped ever since the Taken King was announced.

House of Wolves redeemed a lot of fans for you. But, the issues with the CE of Taken King, $20 armor shaders, and now a simple formula for Red Bull codes, it's going to be tough for you guys to dig yourself out of your current hole.

LOL get over yourself. It will still be one of the most played games on both Xbox and Playstation for months to come. Just like it has been since its launch. Red bull codes won't kill the game if the grind already hasn't.

Eh I don't condone distributing those codes, but if your so-called code can be cracked by anyone above the age of five with a working brain the fault is entirely yours.

People saying that this is a way of getting one over on Activision/red bull are completely misguided. The cans will still sell and Activision already got paid.

The only people being fucked over here are the people legitimately buying the cans, it's disgusting that anyone would take advantage of this.

Is Bungie going to take the loss and just make the DLC mission free for everybody, or will they show the middle finger to all Red Bull buyers and not do anything?

Rhetorical question. I mean, it's Bungie.

you could use them twice, kinda in a way. I think it was setup so you could got one for yourself, then a gift one you could give to another person. Its how I got a lot of mine, my friends just gifted me the second use, because you couldnt do it twice on the same account. The mountain dew codes were one time use

So far they are not commenting on the matter and referring questions to red bull customer service.

Generally speaking, disaster Promos are a whole sack of bad PR.

I'm surprised they're missing the chance to say entirely the wrong thing for the sixth time. It's not like their addicted fanbase will do anything about it.

New week, new controversy involving Destiny.

Glad the witcher has kept me away from it for the past few weeks. If this had happened back when Destiny was practically my second job, I would've been all over this and sweating bullets right now about possibly being banned.

Lol at the people who figured out that sesame street code sequence being called "Thieves".

Once again, Bungie fucked up.

Not like it matters, they have a rabid fanbase for Destiny that prints money for them.
