Can't believe we're actually in Splatoon month now.

Can't remember which publication it was that wrote "Splatoon is to shooters what Mario Kart is to racers", and I really hope that holds to be true.

Brain Training 3DS for Europe surprise release this month.
I may have said this in other months.
A lot of others months.
But I really think it's gonna be this month!

How's Paper Mario on Wii U? I ask because of all the sprites in the game and that Mario sprite on the Super Mario 64 GUI was downright terrifying on Wii U.

Will QA for food.
Hey, I actually subscribed to this thread and didn't wait half the month to remember it's here in Community.

So, when Mario 64 hit Wii U VC, some people posted screens and others complained that it looked dark. The people with the game insisted that it was just the screenshots and that the game looks as bright as ever. I didn't get any N64 VC games until Paper Mario today, and here are a few observations:

1) N64 games on Wii U are, without a doubt, noticeably darker than on Wii. These pictures aren't a perfect representation (my camera seems to have darkened the whole photo to reduce glare on the Wii shot,) but you can still tell.

Wii:
JTvbZ0O.png

Wii U:
UE4QMuR.png

2) N64 games on Wii U are stretched slightly to fill the 1080p resolution, while on Wii mode they only stretch to what I assume is 960p (480p at 2x scale) meaning on Wii U there is a slight amount of blur that's not present in Wii mode.

Wii (left) / Wii U (right):

Note how the picture touches the bezel of my TV on Wii U mode and the text is slightly softened by the blur.

Now overall the Wii U version still comes out ahead for having suspend points, customizable controls, off-TV play, etc. But the picture is in fact darkened for some reason (most noticeable on white screens,) and - for better or worse - the picture is stretched slightly.

Yeah, the picture is really quite dark. I didn't find that to be the case with Super Mario 64.

Gives all the fucks
I keep forgetting Project Mirai DX is out in May. Japan's getting a demo in the middle of the month, so hoping the US will get it as well.

Getting closer to Splatoon...

Check your Wii U's overscan setting, too. One of the things I've seen a lot of people complain about is "Why doesn't it fill the entire screen vertically, there are tiny black borders?" And indeed, I have those borders too.

So do Miiverse screenshots, for that matter:

Yeah, I have screen size set to Max, which seems to fit perfectly in Wii U mode. In Wii mode I almost always have borders but I don't mind since the image is sharper. Both the pics I took were running on the same Wii U system, just one in Wii mode and one in Wii U mode, but both at the same 1080p setting on my TV.

The are going to release the PAL version of Paper Mario in Europe aren't they?
It was translated into French and German so most likely. This is pathetic because back in the Gamecube era they gave us translated Ocarina of time and Majora's Mask in 60Hz only. Now that 100% of players have a 60Hz screen we get 50Hz only, what the fuck.

The only blessing as far as N64 VC games go is the following are English only (so should be US version):
-Mario Tennis
-Mario Golf
-F-Zero X
-Mario Kart 64
-Sin & Punishment (duh)
-Ogre Battle (Square-Enix so not happening)
NOE does not list languages for these so I think they're English only:
-Pokemon Puzzle League
-Wave Race 64
NOE website is a crap source of info.

Did you say Brain Training 3D?
233562_front.jpg

Oh, you meant the other one...

Unless facts: Brain Training 3D is known in Japan as Kuukan Sagashimono Kei: Nouryoku Kaihatsu 3D Nou Training and published/developed by IE institute is on the eShop in Japan and but Europe. There is no North American release (so it is like a reverse of that other Brain Training game).

I just don't get why NES and N64 are so damn dark.

You can see how bad it is when you load up a NES game in amiibo Tap, the border absolutely blinds you due to the contrast with the dull NES game in the middle.

Dat Nintendo standard for emulation.

Just saw those Paper Mario VC Wii U images...WTH is going on at Nintendo. Only GBA emulation seems perfect; perhaps that's because it was done by M2, where as the others were done in house.

I will say the SNES games look good. 3DS VC looks good, as well. Otherwise I'm disappointed with how at least the NES games look, and the Paper Mario image above. I haven't played enough DK 64 to tell if it's particularly dark. Game is so disappointingly clunky I couldn't be bothered :-/ (already played it a lot as a kid, too)

Emulation from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (NES/SNES/GB) looks great too :

From the Elliot Quest thread:

Just have a quick question for you all when you have a sec. We're in the mountain temple and I see from videos online that rocks are supposed to fall from the ceiling and fall away. They don't seem to be falling and when we fight the boss the rocks are sticking around and making it kind of impossible to avoid getting hit. Is this a glitch? Thanks!

BTW, this ended up being part of a glitch, which is now supposed to be fixed!

Hello Miiverse!! I am very happy to announce that version 1.2.2 of Elliot Quest has now been released by Nintendo! This patch fixes numerous bugs that have been reported by this community; issues like the colored switches and players stuck in the graveyard after beating the Phantom boss.

We really hope that you can continue enjoying the game, and I personally want to thank all of you for your patience and understanding!

Is it patched for all regions?

I'm not sure. I recommend you check the Miiverse community (through the web, if that's easier) for the EU/FR page and see if there's a post about the patch on that page. If not, I would presume it's not live yet there. I'm also not sure if the EU version require(s/d) the same patch(es).

So between Elliot Quest, Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors it's like, Patch Friday here.

What's the Hyrule Warriors patch for?

I like amiibo Touch and Play, it's a nice medium between offering a full VC game with an amiibo and nothing at all, and the range of scenes means you can test out other aspects of the game more than a demo of a single level would.

That said, although the randomisation of assigning which game is unlocked by an amiibo is important, it made me realise again just how many Kirby games were pumped out during the NES/SNES era - 3/5 of the amiibo I scanned unlocked Kirby games. Luckily I unlocked Super Metroid too, which was the one I was hoping for the most, and I've got two more amiibo to scan, so I'm reasonably happy.

I just don't get why NES and N64 are so damn dark.

You can see how bad it is when you load up a NES game in amiibo Tap, the border absolutely blinds you due to the contrast with the dull NES game in the middle.
