Ghostbusters (2016) Trailer #1 (Feig, Wiig, McCarthy, McKinnon, Jones)

Somewhat related, a part of me miss the times when laws were a bit lax and there wasn't as big of a stick shoved up the asses of product rights holders. Back in the 80s, you had a lot of smaller movies that took advantage of this and the result were realistic settings as you can get. An example would be how you can get a child's room that had Star Wars bed sheets, ET plushies, Legos, He-Man figures and Spider-Man and Batman comics. And they weren't product placement more than objects placed in the room to make it look more believable as the room of a child "back then"(which, as kids, a lot of us back then had all that type of stuff, so it kinda was). In the kitchen, you'd have people drinking cans of both Coke and Pepsi(again, it wasn't a brand thing, considering how big these two have competed against each other). And all the while, people aren't focusing on what they are drinking, or what is in the kid's room. It all seamlessly blends into the world. No where does someone say, "I'll take a Coke!", or the kid say, "Sometimes I let my Luke Skywalker join He-Man on adventures!". They are just THERE, to make the world more believable, and that's it(they don't beat you over the head with it). And you know what... it works! You can't get away with that shit anymore, though(not making brand use believable, but using so many different brand names in one movie without paying out the ass to gain the rights to use said names).

This feels like the opposite to me--films and especially TV shows were much more likely to have fake or obscured logos 20 or 30 years ago before media companies consolidated and had synergies down the line.

If you had a branded product in a film, there was a greater chance you were freely advertising someone else's product for no good reason, or just asking for trouble if the brand owner didn't like the way it was being used.

I am in a state of zen relaxation about this film because I don't have some weird zealous fixation with the original film

So..you aren't afraid of ghosts?

Yeah, it certainly doesn't. I've never had a problem with the look of it, in fact I think it pops quite a bit. People always complain about CGI though, even when it's good, and it's a comedy with ghosts.

It's a bit of an odd thing to do. I mean, I get it, but nothing about it looks cheap.

RE: it going for more of a show don't tell thing with the gags, yeah, that's iffy.

MAIN: Want something to drink?

FRIEND: If ya got Sunny D, hell yeah!

The friend is accurate though

nothing will ever be as bad as "Converse All Stars, vintage 2004."

While he's eating an off brand sweet potato pie!

The international trailer is always better than the domestic.

Always.

Happens every time, and it has everything to do with marketing perspective. The domestic ended with that possession scene because the domestic marketing team thought that would appeal to more people over here. It's the whole "Americans are stupid" mindset. I wish it weren't the case, but what have you.

I am NOT of the mindset that the international trailer is always better, but it rings true here.

Omg both the ghost boob joke and especially the crowd surfing joke are great when the dialogue isn't in Russian.

I don't know if it's a race thing or a lady thing but I'm mad as hell.

Lol at the downvote brigade again though.

Latest comment calling the movie something something feminazi.

All the jokes in this version landes for me. Even the push pull. Wiig does a good job with it and frankly I'm smart as hell and do that all the time.

It's definitely a Feig humour rather than Ramis/Aykroyd humour and I'm ok with that.

Was about to say, I was watching the international trailer again (for the last shot of the Times Square transformation) and the dislikes are still freaking ridiculous

It's pretty clear that there's some bullshit going on there, because the trailer is markedly better

Oh man, the international trailer is pretty good. The extra jokes totally landed for me, that ghost logo gag was fuckin perfect and Leslie's line is ridiculously apt, goddamn. And still keepin' Mckinnon a mystery, which is a good call. Honestly, it made me feel BETTER about the movie. I'm really excited to see all these ladies bust some ghosts together!!! <3

I think the international trailer is quite a bit better, I still am incredibly wary on this movie but I really want it to be good.

The one thing I love in both trailers is the remix theme song, It's so good. I wish we could get a release of it already.

Just noticed they dropped 4 scientists from the text and now it's friends interesting.

Just saw the international trailer with the new scenes. It actually did even less for me. Leslie Jones' character is just killing any momentum for me. When she jumps off the stage and falls flat, right after Melissa McCarthy jumps off stage and gets carried, and proceeds to question as to whether or not that was due to a racial thing or a lady thing, I was like - they just carried Melissa McCarthy off-stage! It made me cringe. Much like the 'the power of PAIN compels you' line.

I've just made peace with the fact that this isn't a movie i'm going to like. Thats fine. Great for people who do enjoy it though, more power to ya.

I'm surprised at all the hate this project is getting as a result of the trailer. I for one felt the first trailer fell flat as well but given how AWFUL the marketing was for Spy I think it's safe to say at this point that Feig's humor doesn't really translate to two second sound bites. I'm pretty confident that this movie will hit it out of the park even if it's a completely different beast from the original

I'm trying to keep an open mind I really am.

I'm just still bemused. Everything about these trailers look like a hyper bright, super CG, screwball parody comedy type humour. Everyone involved say they are uber fans of the original and want to be faithful to it yadda yadda...yet outside the name, the two look worlds apart from a tonal and comedic point of view.

If they'd wanted to go ahead as a comedy paranormal film on its own merits, I think people would be a hell of a lot more forgiving. But no...they are using the Ghostbusters name to make money. We know it. They know it. Threats and aggression are never deserved and warrant admonishment, but I have no sympathy for the creative based flak Feig and co are currently copping. It looks a poor shadow of the original and they themselves invited the parallels.

I hope it's good. I'll be first up to eat crow.

TV shows did. Films, it depends. I seems like a lot of lower budget movies actually got away with using lots of different brand products as "set dressing" more than actual use. And I kinda believe, in these cases, the production crew didn't go out and BUY most of these stuff. My example of the children's room, I could only guess the majority of that stuff would've come from the children of the crew. Though, it DID give it an authentic feel. You go in a kids room back then, that's kinda what you'd find, be it all that, a Teddy Ruxpin on the chair(looking creepy), a Glo-Worm or Cabbage Patch Doll sleeping next to a slumbering toddler, with a Speak & Spell and Alphie on their shelf, My Little Pony, Rainbow Brite, Maple Town or MoonDreamers in "Little Sis's" room, and such. Bigger budgeted movies couldn't get away with that, but lower budget ones probably did because they went under the radar.

I'm sorry what?

....what?

Everyone's like, "we want the next entry in this franchise! C'mon, we gotta have it, make another one!"

They make another one, starring different people than in the previous one. Doesn't seem to have quite the same feel as the previous one.

Youtube trailer dislike bar goes nuts.

Entirely unrelated flight of fancy here: I was watching Sooty (UK 80's / 90's TV seasons) with my daughter on YouTube and hotdamn, you would NEVER get the placement from other shows used so freely nowadays. They played the Superman theme constantly, riffed on countless franchises, had kids wearing branded t-shirts with everything from Mr-T to Star Wars...I think they homaged Ghostbusters at one point but my memory from my actual youth may be wrong

Urgh, I totally forgot about Sony's baffling decision to produce an unrelated animated Ghostbuters film too.

Sony Pictures gonna Sony Pictures.

A quarter of the original Ghostbusters team has passed on, another quarter doesn't display any interest in revisiting his character. That leaves it down to two, and they're both getting pretty up in age at this point. A Ghostbusters 3 starring current day Dan Akroyd and Ernie Hudson just wouldn't feel right.

However, Sony Pictures is just sitting on this multi-million dollar franchise. You can't entirely expect them to just forgo making a new film forever when there are likely dozens of writers and directors chomping at the bit to make a new Ghostbusters film.

In regards to Federation Force, that's a lot of anger that I just really don't understand.

It's a game in the Metroid Prime universe. That title doesn't guarantee Samus Aran having a starring role. If it was called "Samus Aran: Federation Force" there would be an argument there, but otherwise there isn't.

More importantly, the existence of Federation Force doesn't mean that a new Metroid game with Samus as the headliner is somehow cancelled forever.

Gamers can be a fickle bunch sometime.

The International Trailer is better, they are definitely going for the full on comedy style though, with how the movie is shot, also the scene at the gig seems to confirm some of what the Reddit reviewer said.

The Kinda Funny guys reaction video to the first trailer is a pretty good watch, for those that haven't seen it, the "Same but Different" explanation pretty much nails how movies are being treated lately.

That's a damn good trailer. Wow.

I don't care if the Reddit post has accuracies in it. I'm seeing the movie in theaters and forming an opinion on my own.

International trailer is better, but I've never been that into Ghostbusters to begin with, so I probably will never see this unless invited by friends.

By the way, does Ghostbusters actually have that big of a following? The logo is awesome, and the movie and cartoon were fun, but does it have that much of a fanbase to require this movie being made?

It was more or less up there with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for popularity in the late 80s/early 90s. Ghostbusters 2 was made largely due to the popularity of the cartoon and there was a line of toys and other merchandise that did very well.

It's part of the American pop culture, basically.

Good point. I liked the TV show well enough, but TMNT was my jam.

I hope this is a good movie and that it finds an audience. Reading the YouTube comments to this trailer is just disgusting. Nothing but people dropping terms like "feminazis" and talking about political correctness in an angry way.

To be fair, the original film balanced a lot of cheap humor with serious subject matter (it's incredible at building tension then relieving it with jokes). So far, all we've seen from this are cheap gags. There could be serious material, but we just don't know if it's there yet.
Feig has confirmed multiple times that he wants the movie to be actually scary so I'd say that's at least one thing we don't have to worry about.

The mosh pit joke was cute. Still doesn't look great. For all we know, that was one of the few jokes that worked in the film and they put all the good stuff right in the trailer.
For all we know, they're loading the trailers with the bad/broad jokes to throw the widest net they can since they have a massive uphill battle with this movie.

I don't give a fuck if this movie is amazing or shit
Just for the love of god release a full version of that dope ass theme song remix
SERIOUSLY. I was worried it was one of those "made for the trailer" songs but the international trailer has a lot more of it, including what sounds like the very beginning of the song. I really really want that track it sounds so rad.

I think you're really overthinking that joke. Of course they carried McCarthy away and it has nothing to do with race or gender. It's because compared to McCarthy's character she's a giant. People moved because they didn't want to get crushed.

-----

I wonder if Sony chose not to do a remaster of the game because it features the old cast and they don't want to create any "brand confusion" or something. A rerelease for the 30th anniversary would have been perfect but of course, Sony gonna Sony.

I honestly wish folks would take the stance of just ignoring the damn thing if it's not their cup o' tea.

You can blissfully live your live ignorant to the fact that this film exists and it no way tarnishes the original film's quality or significance.

I feel like everybody would be better off if more folks did that.

Eh, the people complaining are likely fans of the original, so I can understand why they would be overt with their complaints, but the way everything is politicized in comments sections is scary. The creators must have known that would happen, though. They should have expected it.

Personally, a lot about the first trailer rubbed me the wrong way, and it wasn't the all-female cast...the Exorcist nod followed by the slapping and "the power of _____ compels you!" was just cringe inducing. Awful and dated comedy.

I completely forgot to mention that I was SUPER excited to hear Hemsworth's accent after initially feeling like I wanted to wait on watching the international trailer (or not watch it at all). So many of his roles have him doing an American accent of some kind that it gets boring :/ I loved hearing it on SNL so I'm glad we'll get to hear it in this movie, too!

Hemsworth with the accent sort of almost made me feel like he is channeling Rhys Darby a bit for this part (yes I know he's from New Zealand)

The diference is that it is IMPOSSIBLE to do that =P

Not only people from the original cast already died, but a ghostbuster movie with everyone old would NEVER have the same feel as the original

but a ghostbuster movie with everyone old would NEVER have the same feel as the original

Hell, I think the mere existence of Ghostbusters 2 proves this ten-fold. I'm not defending this movie or saying it was the right thing to do, but the original folks did do another one and it was arguably much worse and sillier. I still enjoyed it as it had things I really liked but it wasn't even the same as the original. I'm not sure why people have to be latched onto the "original" things so much. Same with god damn Spiderman. Who cares how many times its rebooted, there's like a billion comic variants but with film it's like Raimi or bust, even though Spider-man 3 happened.

I'm just saying that while these guys have did a great job before it doesn't mean that they're the only ones that can do it. There have been plenty of sequels and new franchises that many felt were a let down by the original creators; George Lucas and Peter Jackson immediately spring to mind. So again, not really sure why people have to remain so "loyal" to such things. Let other things exist and other people try it out. If it sucks, it's just a movie.

The reddit post is whatever. If you don't like something, it's actually really easy to be reductive/dismissive of it. If I saw an advance screening of TFA, I'd burn the floor down

Dam..I actually chuckled at Chris's joke at the end haha.

Honestly the boobs thing was going to happen in some form. It's such an obvious thing to do as a re-imagining with a female cast. I'm not even sure it annoys me anymore, and it's probably because it's Hemsworth playing a nerdy dude and hanging out with a bunch of women. It's kind of hilarious actually, especially with his serious, straight-faced demeanor.

...but please movie, have some better humor. I swear if this movie is funny and works in spite of its script, it's gonna be because Fieg caught lightning in a bottle with the casting.

Feig has confirmed multiple times that he wants the movie to be actually scary so I'd say that's at least one thing we don't have to worry about.

That would assume that the leaked Reddit summary (which has been on the money so far) is wrong, as the poster even states at the end that it's all slapstick and nothing is scary. Nothing I've seen in the marketing so far contradicts this.

Like I said, I could be wrong, but it's not looking good.

Feig has confirmed multiple times that he wants the movie to be actually scary so I'd say that's at least one thing we don't have to worry about.

And then Katie Dippold clarified that it was the funny kind of scary where it's about to be scary but then something funny happens because it's her favorite kind of humor or something. She referenced Shaun of the Dead, but that's not even how I'd describe Shaun of the Dead, which was closer to the original Ghostbusters and actually had some atmosphere, so I'm sort of inclined to believe that she has no idea what she's talking about. Unless she and the film proves me wrong, but Shaun of the Dead, while it certainly had some slapstick, was more naturally funny like the original GB and not try-hard funny like the jokes in the trailer are executed.

No one should be expecting anything legit here when it comes to that. Perhaps that was an original intention that Feig had, but with Dippold co-writing and the tone of the trailer, I mean I'm just doing the math here.
