Daily KOS Elections: Update on WI, MI, PA Recount Battles

Day two of WI recount votes: Trump gained 11 votes, Hillary lost 25 votes, Jill Stein gained 17 or so votes. Great use of money.

Also Stein dropping out of PA makes this whole thing a joke, since without PA there is no mathematical path in which Trump loses. With PA he has 280 EVs.

They're still looking down at the precinct by precinct level, she hasn't given up recount efforts in PA, though maybe at the statewide level. She apparently will have a conference or something on Monday explaining her plans with PA. Philadelphia apparently still has some votes to be counted still.

She would have to flip all three states. He has 306 now. If he somehow lost Pennsylvania(20 EV) it would be 286. Even if he lost Michigan(16 EV) he would still have 270. Like I said in a previous post, it would have been crazy had he only won Wisconsin. Then the one EC vote he won in Maine would have made the difference. I guess the lawyers would have descended on Maine to do a recount of that small district he won. Although honestly, I don't know what his victory margin was in that Maine district.

Philly's done counting. You have some precincts in Washington County left, but those went heavy for Trump.

Stein's going to file in Federal Court on the grounds on Monday that getting a recount in PA is too hard...without having any evidence.

Michigan's already certified their Electors for the College, so they expect nothing to change from a recount, if it happens. The State SC leans Republican 5-2 in Michigan.

Nothing solid necessarily, but very interesting. And frustrating we have such old, broken junk being used for something so important:

US election: broken machines could throw Michigan recount into chaos

Broken polling machines may have put vote counts in question in more than half of Detroit’s precincts and nearly one-third of surrounding Wayne County, possibly throwing the Michigan recount into chaos.

If the discrepancies can’t be solved by recounting every paper ballot in question by hand, a recount in those precincts simply won’t happen.

Donald Trump’s slim margin over Hillary Clinton means any chance that the state might flip on a recount likely hinges on Wayne County, where she won by a landslide. Clinton lost by 10,704 votes in Michigan; Wayne’s population of 1,759,335 makes it the likeliest candidate to contain errors bigger than that margin.

Eighty-seven of Wayne County’s decade-old voting machines broke on election day, according to Detroit’s elections director, Daniel Baxter. He told the Detroit News, which first reported the story, that ballot scanners often jammed when polling place workers were trying to operate them. Every time a jammed ballot was removed and reinserted, he suspects the machine may have re-counted it.

Preliminary investigation by election officials in Wayne County found that 610 of the area’s 1,680 precincts could not reconcile the number of votes cast according to the machines with the number of ballots issued according to the electoral rolls. Detroit contains 662 of Wayne’s precincts; in 392 of those, the number of votes didn’t match up.

Protect Our Elections, a liberal-leaning group based in Washington, D.C., says more than 160,000 votes in Florida weren't counted during last month's presidential election. The group claims each of those votes matters a great deal because Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton by 112,911 votes in the Sunshine State. Trump won by roughly 1.5 percent, a margin high enough to avoid the state's automatic-recount provisions.

But last Friday, Protect Our Elections sued the state to contest the election, possibly throwing President-elect Trump's transition into an even greater state of turmoil.

For the past 30 days, failed Green Party candidate Jill Stein has launched a much-ballyhooed (but perfectly legal) attempt to recount votes in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, forcing the country to grapple with the question of exactly how hackable our election system really is. But despite how crucial Florida's 29 Electoral College votes are to the election, nobody has thrown Florida's election results under the microscope until now.

After raising more than $65,000 online, Protect Our Elections sued to contest the election at 11:48 p.m. Friday, a scant 12 minutes before the state's election-lawsuit deadline. The group claims — citing what looks to be extremely shaky evidence — the vote totals do not include "tens of thousands" of legal votes that weren't counted because of alleged vote-machine malfunctions, but do include "tens of thousands of illegal votes that were improperly counted."
