Surprisingly enjoyable. Super bloated cast but the thing did an impressive job of holding together, even "I didn't mean to do a mutiny guy" got to shine. I was nervous at the start when Rocket got excited at the prospect of wantonly murdering the gold people he just betrayed. Like "uhhh that's not a fun, endearing thing for this guy to do this is fucked up". But thankfully the movie was aware and worked with that.

Tons of great relationships, too. Funny that every single relationship was miles more interesting than dull-ass Quill x Gamora.

Yondu really stole the show. I started getting so uncomfortable at the end, the funeral was so earnest and honestly touching that I was worried that I had missed Michael Rooker actually dying and they were doing a tribute to him.

Loving the Kurt Russelaissance.

Between this and an episode of the new Mystery Science Theater 3000 that I watched this morning, I accidentally saw two space movies with David Hasselhoff this weekend.

I was really surprised by Michael Rooker in this. He's always been a pretty good creep but I haven't seen him put forth a performance like this before. I guess James Gunn probably understands his strengths and talent enough by now to get it out of him.

Anyone else wish Star Lord had his helmet on more in scenes? Its a cool mask. I can understand sometimes you want the audience to see his expression, but during the battle scenes I wish he kept it on.

Saw it for the 2nd time. Even better than the 1st time. All the emotional scenes hit even harder this time around. This movie should hold up fine with repeated viewings.

My brother loved the first one and thought part 2 was better for how much more emotional it was.

Saw it last night. Thought it was decent, the best part was the extremely impressive CG. I thought the first half was kind of weak, but the second half was great so on balance it was so-so. First half jokes seemed to fall flat in our theater.

A couple of friends and I watched this movie recently. One of them hasn't seen Volume 1. He was super surprised, liked Volume 2 and said "Why have I never watched the first one?" :D

Just got back from seeing this. Absolutely loved it. Read through some of the previous pages, and just like everyone else, the Poppins line killed it in my showing. I was almost in tears.

It's not often I leave a movie theater and think, I could really go back and watch it again. I did with this. Kurt Russel was awesome too.

Earlier, it was brought up how Drax says "I tried" after the delayed "watch out!" when Mantis was hit. That line isn't in the film =/. Trailer only. (I just saw it for the third time).

I hope for a director's cut home release with a few lines reinserted AND dat bass added somewhere (and Fox on the Run). Please, Gunn!?

So there are two Guardians spinoffs planned?
I have no idea. Didn't even know about one spin-off. Link?
I only knew the answers to your questions because of this thread. Yondu, Stallone's character (Starhawk) and the others were the Guardians in the 70's in comic form. Star-Lord and co didn't get introduced until the 90's or some such.

It would be cool, though, to see this team in their prime in a movie.

There were no Nova Force in this at all. Like, did they even mention them?

It's kinda impressive how little they reuse from the first movie.

Just got out of it. A lot of my friends said it was a big step down from the first movie, so I was glad to see that wasn't the case at all. Movie was almost entirely character driven and I'm happy it was.

They do mention them at least once. Ravengers said they didn't want to deal with them if they killed the guardians.

Just finished watching it. The visual humor was great, but many of the jokes fell flat.

Yondu was MVP, he was absolutely fantastic. His absolute massacre of the asshole ravagers was the best part of the movie.

The gold people were pretty funny, especially the fact that they're just playing a video game when they're flying their ships. Can't wait for Adam Warlock!

I had no idea who Stallone's crew were supposed to be (original Guardians, right?) but crystal dude and the red alien were awesome.

Kraglin might be my favorite secondary MCU character. I hope he sticks around and learns how to use Yondu's arrow.

Saw this a couple of weeks back, gave it a week or so to sink in and also a bit of time to watch the original again.

Overall I feel the first movie was better. It has a a more epic story, the jokes felt more intertwined with the plot-line and it had so many locations, I felt like it really expanded and added a sense of wonder to the MCU (infinity stones, celestials!!)

The story here was pretty weak, and some of the jokes outstayed their welcome. I did however think the action sequences were improved, and it was nice to have more of the characters shine. Drax and Yondu stole the show.

But I think my gripe is the films lack of narrative subtly. The first film does a great job of hinting at things, Yondu being a softy for Peter, Rocket actually caring about humans (saving Rhomann's family etc which I didn't even notice until the third viewing), Drax wanting to die, even the main thread of Peter finding it hard to adapt to having a family again was pretty low-key until the 'take my hand peter' flashback right at the end.

But in this film, they are like 'you know that subtle shit from the first film? well, now we're going to spell it out for you cos your stupid'. They have 4 scenes basically showing that Yondu is peters dad, they have a forth-wall breaking conversation with Rocket Racoon explaining why he pushes people away, they have another fucking character emote for Drax to reveal how he misses his family. I didn't feel like they actually expanded the characters at all, it was just the 'spoiler' version of the first film.

The villain being the incarnate of cancer was pretty interesting, but as an old school comic guy, I thought it was super underwhelming for a celestial to be the villain and have him too weak to kill a single person in the entire film. In fact, the whole Super Saiyan ending was just fucking stupid.

James Gunn also needs to stop trying to make Sean Gunn be a thing too, that left a bad taste in my mouth. Not sure how good a job he does with the Rocket Racoon stuff but he stood out like a sore thumb as a bad-ass mercenary.

I felt the jokes here were perfectly in line with the plot. With Rocket being a dick, getting them into trouble and having him relate with Yondu as things resolve by the end for one. And Peter, also a dick, calling Rocket a trash panda for lolz in the beginning and walking back his joke after starting to mock Yondu for looking like Mary Poppins at the end. And I know there are more.

I've noticed how Rocket gives a look to Yondu after he explains why he kept Peter as if knowing it was bullshit. I compared this to the same subtlety you describe of the first film. Also, with Mantis emoting for Drax, I loved that without having to explain it, they establish just how DEEP Drax's emotions are just by showing Mantis' reactions. And I mean that for both the laughter and crying where as with Peter, she just sort of... tells them what he's feeling. I like that contrast.

The villain being the incarnate of cancer was pretty interesting, but as an old school comic guy, I thought it was super underwhelming for a celestial to be the villain and have him too weak to kill a single person in the entire film. In fact, the whole Super Saiyan ending was just fucking stupid.

I thought Sean Gunn was fine. He really ramps up that funeral scene as he was the closest to Yondu as far as being a fellow Ravager. But, I hope he isn't sporting the Mohawk (that actually was cremated with Yondu) and arrow in the next one. Don't taint Yondu's legacy like that. It was a fun gag having him try, but that's it. And I certainly don't think he's being playes as a "badass mercenary". Seems like a joke character with some heart.

I don't mean to be a contrarian to your post, it's just that after seeing it three times, I happen to appreciate the things you seem to have missed or not care for.

I think kraglin will have the arrow going forward. I don't think that was a gag and I'm ok with it given how close they were and it's a pretty fucking cool weapon. He was practicing with it and got better in the brief time it showed him so I would expect him to have it from now on.

Saw it yesterday, man what a hugely entertaining movie. This is the kind of movie I gladly pay extra to see in a theater. So many good laughs too.

On a side note, my local theater must have upgraded or something, because there was a brief screen indicating 4K projection, and the picture quality was superb.

But in this film, they are like 'you know that subtle shit from the first film? well, now we're going to spell it out for you cos your stupid'.

Yeah, I'd agree, the emo stuff was laid on pretty thick. It was overall so fun that I can easily forgive these ham-fisted moments, but that aspect did distract me at times.

Mantis feeling the depth of Drax's grief is what makes her realize that Ego's way of breaking and discarding his non-Celestial children is not normal. So it was plot relevant in addition to showing more of Drax's character.

Saw GoTG2 today. Enjoyed it but felt the ending dragged out a lot longer then it needed. Not the end credit scenes but just the climax itself. I enjoyed it but it could have been significantly shorter. That and I'm super tired of what they're doing with Drax outside of one very significant scene where he's talking about his daughter to Mantis. I could have used a LOT more of that with him. That said give me Rocket and Groot all day, every day. It's ending was really good though were by comparison the ending of the first film just made me mad and part of why I rarely watch it. Yondu was once again I think the best character in both films but that's largely because it's Michael Rooker I think.

I don't understand the best Marvel movie ever drum beat some were going on about when it first came out of what some on youtube were saying before it released. Thought that was BS then and I think it is now even though I had a really good time and looking forward to seeing this one again.

Also is it me or does Thanos come off a lot more deadly and menacing in this then he does in the first film without even being in this film!?

I loved Peter quill and relationship with his father .
I loved gamoras relationship with her sister
And yondu's relationship with rocket.
I just wanted that same thing with Drax. Apart from that one scene with mantis I just felt he was used as a comedic prop .

I just assumed since it's a lot of new characters that just appeared out of nowhere. lol

Warlock is s teaser for volume 3 and it's assumed the OG Guardians are for volume 3, too.
Adam Warlock was originally supposed to be in GOTG Vol. 2. He's definitely been set-up for GOTG Vol. 3.

Man, at this point Guardians will have more characters than a Fast and Furious film. lol

Finally saw it last night. Honestly it could have ended after the opening sequence and I would have felt like I got 15 dollars worth of entertainment out of the movie.

I hope Thor is like this.

Late on this (in part because I forgot to share it when I first finished it), here's my review:

It does look like the space setting is getting a much brighter palette, which I'm very much looking forward to seeing in Thor 3.

Technically it was only Yondu who brought it up, the whole reason a mutiny happened.

He did show genuine relationship moments with Mantis though, and I'd argue more than one scene. The thing though is his race is mostly about not being over with emotions and being literally minded.

Wish they had dialed down the Baby Groot exploitation just a tad.

Felt a little more subtle in the first movie, with the flower to the little girl and the lights and even the ball formation when the ship was falling

Just saw this. Starlord's dad is a dick on top of being insane. I mean I'm not even talking about him killing the woman he loves because he might not want to leave and continue on his insane plan if she lives (That's dickish but more cause he's insane really)... I'm talking about the fact that he can't even kill her in a kind way. In fact he chooses one of the crueler ways to die. I love you dear, have a disease that kills you slowly, painfully, and you get to know in advance that you are going to die soon. Oh, and let's make it so that it is something your son can watch happen.

Also if Peter is a celestial, why would a little space exposure kill him?

Peter lost his immortality the moment his dad died. His dad even yells at him that he's going to become a normal human if he dies.
