A player named Danke had a pretty good Iron Man anchor

Yipes got taken out by a Phoenix Wright off-stream

Lots of MODOKs, though I guess he's more mid-tier

Angelic used Shuma and got to the top 8

Justin's Storm was the hardest working character in the tourney

Cool thanks.

I will say that my game, Injustice, wasnt as hype as I thought it would be...

It disappointed me that at a high level, superman zoning still won. It makes me chuckle when I hear, "Just duck/block and dash!".

Yeah, or I can pick Superman or eyelazer my way to Evo 2014.

Watching KOF made me want to go out and buy KOF.

Until you find out how bad the online is.

But at the same time cancel windows are tighter, so input timing is still pretty strict overall.

No actually its very lenient, especially thanks to the really long input buffer.

Doing the move and holding the button will have the game store the motion for about 5 frames, so you can do moves way ahead of time and still have them come out and cancel just right.

Technically that's not a proper input buffer, as it's just auto-repeating while held instead of remembering a single press(Blazblue is similar and 1f links still exist), but either way I didn't know. Maybe that's what I was doing wrong!

I've barely touched UMvC3, how good is Shuma anyway? Used to love throwing people off by picking her/it in MvC2.
He's like Low Mid with very good support game (that basically just means he has a good assist, safe DHC and a good THC hyper). That team was basically designed around using Shuma's Mystic Ray which is phenomenal for Wolverine in the Zero and fliers match up. Shuma when properly assisted is actually a legitimate threat but alone he gets zoned out and rushed down. He does have very good solo damage, some crazy mix ups but his moves like Mystic Smash have shit priority and hit stun plus he's a fucking charge character in a versus game.

As someone who's not familiar with the game Superman does indeed look cheap, combos with great damage and broken lasers from far away.
The characters who really punish Superman's zoning were toned down a little in the recent patch like Killer Frost and Black Adam. The game is still new and getting balanced like with SSF4 when Sagat was at the top. 2 weeks ago there would have been a lot of Scorpions with teleports that would blow up everyone's zoning. A few months ago there would have been a lot of Deathstrokes ridiculous zoning. In testing Sinestro's grabs were too strong. I think they'll lower the damage of the meterburned heavy eye laser or make it unmeter burned more punishable.

Also, Zod and MMH look like they have tools to blow that zoning up.

That's really the tragedy of the game. So many people would be buying it up if it let people play online.

I have the game, but the terrible online keeps me from actually practicing it. Here's to hoping the steam release somehow fixes the netcode.
probably not

So guys how was dat Evo?

My throat is sore, I have a headache from lack of sleep and my feet hurt. But man did I pick the right year to come to Evo.

On Saturday, looking at the Marvel top 8 I dreaded that Marvel finals would be outhyped by Kof and AE. Boy was I wrong. Sunday started strong and ended stronger.

KOF was amazing. Was rooting for Mexico and Reynald winning was too sweet. I don't play Smash but the Ice Climbers glitch got me hype. Itsjustass disappointed but Marvel and AE were godlike.

Shoutouts to the amazing crowd. From booing the Xbox One to 'Uno Mas' chants for Kof to 'Oil Up' to the Akuma Hree chants. Great tournament. Great experience.

10/10

Hrm, interesting, doesn't sound that different from 2 on paper. I always played Shuma as a rushdown character instead of keepaway, which, you know, worked great against maybe 6 characters. Shame Mystic Smash is still as useless as in 2, though I remember getting a few laughs dropping it in midair against Sentinels.

Mystic Smash is Shuma-Gorath's best move in the neutral.

Mystic Smash is still pretty good but you need to cover it with an assist. While he can zone he is still more of a rushdown character.

They should seriously have a second EVO in the winter. Only once a year just isn't enough. I know there are smaller events during the year, but they're not the same.

It would be relatively small. Most entrants save their yearly savings for EVO and some still have trouble making it out to Vegas. Half the fun is seeing all these randoms make Top 8 (i.e., Marvel 3 Top 8).

First time watching Evo for me and I loved it. P4A was awesome and Marvel was amazing. Definitely gonna check out competitive streams more often now.

My man.

Never going to happen though because no one really takes it seriously. And they're right in that.

I think they are afraid of diluting their brand. Evo is the definitive tournament for fighting games, if people have a choice between evo summer and evo winter it may not mean as much to attend one or both.

Another idea is to get with the most stable tournaments and create a larger functioning body greater than "Road to Evo" points. This way evo is still evo, but you get the quality/production pumped into other events.

In another post it said that Mr. Wizard is interested in trying to get EVO Japan going again.

That would be awesome if it came to be.

Well, that may be why I had difficulty setting anyone up with Shuma outside from assists.

So I was on the right track then? Heh. Getting good with the character seems beyond my skill level anyways, but damn if you guys aren't making me want to give 3 another shot :p

Just watched the SF4 finals - one of the best for a while. Nice mix of characters Hakan (even if only counterpick), Makoto, Ibuki and fucking Gen takes it! As a Gen player since the start so happy to see my main take the crown. Wow, never thought it would happen. ^_^

It's frustrating how Injustice has been hype for so many tournaments but had a meh Evo. It was really good at CEO.

It pained me how bad a showing it had for the mass audience. And yeah, I've already had a friend who was curious but missed the stream ask me how Injustice was. "Here, watch CEO instead," I said.

Rest of the games were great though, so Sunday finals day overall was still good.

This is the least hyped evo i've ever watched..or maybe the last year oversold me.

wuuut. i barely play fighters or understand what the commentators are saying, but last year was a snoozefest compared to this year. only KOF and Mahvel were hype in 2012, this year almost every top 8 was hype-city.

My first EVO, so incredible. I got some good crowd vines on my twitter, like this:

lol jchen and s-kill were laughing at the crowd mimicking the air fireballs. great stuff.

Shuma-Gorath is on my team, so if you have questions, I'm glad to answer them in the Marvel OT (moves slower than this thread). The most difficult aspect of Shuma-Gorath is getting his combos down.

IMO, the best Shuma-Gorath team is:
Shuma-Gorath (Mystic Ray)
Dr. Strange (Bolts of Balthakk)
Amaterasu (Cold Stars)

At least, that's the best I've seen. Arrow assists are also really good for Shuma-Gorath, though. I'm sure Unibeam would work as well. Plasma Beam isn't so great for him.

Kind of pathetic when you consider how poor the hitbox is overall.

Anytime I see somebody block it instead of directly challenging it I assume they have no experience fighting Shuma.
Agreed and agreed, with exception given to those wonderful situations where it crosses up right above the opponent's head. I think Shuma-Gorath might just be the worst solo character in the game. Ever so slightly below Hsien-ko.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.

It's SNK/Suckmore. That's not gonna happen. :(

How I long for the days of SNK/non-Suckmore. :(

DOA has a lot of problems that still need to be fixed, it's not a very good game at the moment. I still love it though. Hopefully the arcade release of ultimate can bring some good changes to the series down the line but I'm a bit wary of putting any faith in Team Ninja.

Yeah online is terrible. At least they got everything else right with KoF XIII. Most balanced fighter this gen IMO. Awe inspiring footsies and meter game and the whole cast turned up viable.

That random long ass combo in KI was scripted lol only people yelling were the MadCatz announcers as the crowd watched silent.

People who're knowledgeable know when they're being bullshitted...

I don't know dick about fighting games, so to me KI looked pretty cool. But nearly everyone who knows fighting games well has been pretty critical of what they saw.
