What is Banshee?

Banshee is a balls to the wall pulp action series that airs Friday nights on Cinemax. Easily the most brutal show on television, it's like watching a visceral live action graphic novel where people get punched, kicked, stabbed, blown up, crushed, and otherwise beaten to a pulp every week. It's not all violence though - the show has a highly entertaining cast of characters consisting of Native American assassins, Amish farmers, Russian Gangsters, and an Albino cutthroat. There's also a lot of sex and nudity. If you're into that sort of thing.

The Plot

The series stars Antony Starr as Lucas Hood, an ex-con and master thief who assumes the identity of the sheriff of Banshee, Pa., where he continues his criminal activities, even as he's hunted by the shadowy gangsters he betrayed years earlier.

The Cast

  • Lucas Hood is an ex-convict and master thief who assumes the identity of the sheriff of Banshee, PA, where he continues his criminal activities even as he's being hunted by the gangsters he betrayed years earlier.
  • Job is a cross-dressing hair stylist and genius computer hacker who plays a key part in Lucas' criminal endeavors.
  • Sugar Bates, a powerful and wise former boxer and ex-con who is now the owner of the local watering hole.

  • Carrie was once a notorious jewel thief, but now lives in Banshee under an assumed identity with a husband and children.
  • A former marine who served in the first Gulf War, Gordon is Banshee's D.A. and Carrie's husband.
  • Deva is Carrie and Gordon's rebellious teenage daughter and the biological daughter of Carrie and Hood.

  • Kai is an intimidating and wealthy Banshee businessman who considers himself above the law. Disowned by his Amish family, Kai has a hand in nearly all of Banshee's criminal enterprises.
  • A local Amish girl in her early 20s, Rebecca is observant during the day, but parties at night.
  • Clay Burton is the personal assistant and bodyguard for Kai Proctor.

  • Alex Longshadow, the son of Kinaho Tribe Chief Benjamin Longshadow.
  • Native American assassin Nola Longshadow.
  • Hoyt Rivers, head of security for Alex Longshadow

Other cast members include:

  • Ben Cross as Mr. Rabbit
  • Gabriel Suttle as Max Hopewell
  • Matt Servitto as Deputy Brock Lotus
  • Demetrius Grosse as Deputy Emmett Yawners
  • Trieste Kelly Dunn as Deputy Siobhan Kelly
  • Zeljko Ivanek as Jim Racine

I'm planning to marathon the first season on bluray to get ready for the second season. The first season was a nice surprise for me, as I didn't know what to expect. It ended up being one of the best series (for me) of last year.

I was also really surprised at just how legitimately good it was. Wasn't expecting that level of quality from Cinemax.

Some of the most fearless actors on TV. They sell anything, no matter how ludicrous. The actor that plays Carrie/Anna legit deserves an Emmy for her work.

Amazing show is amazing.

I was not expecting something this awesome when I started watching this show after the recommendation of a fellow gaffer in the Dexter thread. Thank you.

Can't wait. Was so pleasantly surprised by this. Went in not expecting much and came out wanting more.

Bring it on!

My sexy Amish temptress returns! Yay! It's too bad we can't post her best GIFs...

For those interested in the development of Banshee's awesome supporting cast, here's a MILD SPOILER:
According to the showrunners, we are going to learn a lot more about Job's history.

Ooh, that's exciting to hear! I felt that
__Job__
was somewhat underserved in the first season so I'm looking forward to seeing more of him in season 2.

So when does it begin? Next Friday?

It's in the banner - January 10 at 10/9c.

Nice work on the thread, Ratsky!

Thanks, though I'm a little miffed that I had to reuse the character portraits from season one. I can't believe Cinemax didn't bother to release new ones for the upcoming season. The official Banshee website is about as bare bones as can be so I didn't have a whole lot to work with.

That's a little disappointing, though they have prided themselves in keeping production costs down for the show. Maybe they just didn't see the need and wanted to spend the money somewhere else.

In other news, the Banshee S2 Origins vids didn't do much for me. It's a cool idea to do some backstory as a teaser, but I have a tough time buying any of these actors as themselves 15-17 years ago and they haven't added much to the story. They're not offensively bad or anything - just feel a little superfluous.

I mean, I guess it's really not that important. I'd rather have teaser videos or production blogs than static pictures on their main site that I'll only look at once or twice, if that's what it comes down to. Still, how much could it possibly cost to take a few pictures of the main cast? They could even just take a few stills from an upcoming episode or something if they really wanted to pinch pennies.

Yeah, they could have at least added some vaseline to the lens or some bloom lighting to make everything look "flashback-y" like how other shows do. None of the actors looked convincingly younger that's for sure.

I enjoyed Carrie and Gordon's flashback for what it was but the Hood/Job one wasn't that great. It was just a rehash of the "star crossed lovers Mr. Rabbit Ukrainian mob" stuff that was previously explored in depth during season one and the prequel comic.

True, we're not talking a lot of money here for some photos, and they have released a couple of stills from the first few episodes that they could slap on the website if they wanted to.

I tweeted Yataines last year about that.

He said there would be more Burton.
The actor, Matthew Rauch, tweeted this yesterday:

Guess who's back?

lol, if you google 'ivana milicevic banshee' ALMOST ALL THE IMAGES ARE OF HER NAKED OR HAVING SEX.

Come on, guys. I know she's hot. But she also like the best actor on the show and is so badass.

Oh man, I didn't realize she was Le Chiffre's blonde girlfriend from Casino Royale. Shiiiiiiiiiet.

This girl here, is one of the best actors on TV:

I really hope that Gordon loses it this season. That automatic rifle in the credits of Season 1 had his name on it and felt like it was leading up to something.

Also, the opening credits remain badass. I hope they continue to change in Season 2.

The Banshee Origins were done really quickly between takes it seems. Put a wig and some well lit makeup on Ivana Milecevic and she could look like she did here in Enemy Of The State 15 years ago.

Hood on the other hand looked like this back in the day in Xena:

Watching Enemy Of The State again is very interesting, it had a very good eye on the power of surveillance and a lot of now big TV names (Anna Gunn, Scott Caan, Regina King) in minor roles.

I just finished re-watching S1 for the first time and just in time for the new season to start.

I loved it even more the second time around to be honest. Caught more things. Didn't even know there were post credit scenes.
