While we're spitballing- it would be interesting to see true to life forensic work. I have no idea how all that stuff works in real life and I kind of imagine its a lot of waiting around and looking at weird pigment blotches and stuff. It could be a cool writing challenge.

Cate Blanchett not smokin hot? Now I've heard everything.

Don't know if anyone brought this up before ... not browsing 60 pages LOL. But I'm rewatching the show and caught this in episode 2 when they visit the victim's mother. WTF is going on in this picture? Some bizarre looking shit to me. Think it's going to turn out that Dora Lang was meant to end up a sacrifice from birth or something?

What are you guys saying? We're getting just one season worth of this McConaughey/Harrelson greatness?

The show is an anthology so next season (assuming there is a next season) then it would presumably be new setting, new characters, new storyline.

Given how much MM is blowing up at present due to Dallas Buyers Club etc (dude is looking strong for that Oscar) I suspect it's unlikely that he's going to be up for doing another season.

That episode was fucking great. Last action scene was about as well directed and tense as any I've seen on TV. Harrelson was amazing in the first half especially.

Just wanted to show some love to Woody, cause he's certainly holding up his end. Man, 4 more episodes. Crazy to think about where it goes from here.

Just watched the last episode. Wow! Pretty amazing hour of television.

It all felt so tense once Rust went undercover. Me and my wife were holding our breaths waiting for them to find out he was a cop or reveal that they had found out while he was away somehow. And that final sequence was really good.

yeah although i've become a mcconaughey fanboy in the last year or so i think harrelson is just as good in this series (if not better at times)

Right, I suppose that does sort of guarantee this fucking miracle were witnessing right now is not going to get watered down once the thing loses steam later on.

However, it would be a damn shame for the two of them to step away from this 'willingly', because goddamn if this isn't among the all time best stuff I have ever seen.

Feels like it's going to be hard to top the casting of Rust and Marty. Wonder if they'll just avoid bigger names going forward rather than trying to top this season.

Yeah, part of me wishes this were just a mini-series so that way it never goes down hill. But, and we've already begun to see it with this series and House of Cards, I do think we're going to see a lot more big Hollywood actors turning to TV, even if it's only for a single season like True Detective.

God, it would be awesome if Leo wins his Oscar and decides to go (back) to TV and joins on for season 2.

Been dying to engage in discussing this show.

It's such a phenomenal show, it almost feels too good to be true at times. McConaughey and Harrelson have some real chemistry going on, I think they bring the best out of each other, and their scenes, even the most mundane ones, are simply fascinating to me. Really love the show.

They need to have a spin-off one man stage show with MM, a six pack of beer, and a pack of cigarettes, where he just spouts of random bullshit for an hour and walks off.

So, how to keep it "dark and broody" without feeling like a re-hash, and just inferior to this season? A lot of the suggestions I feel would be too similar to this pairing.

Yeah, Harrelson's character is a much needed "straight-man" in this show, and is an excellent foil to Rust's craziness. His role in the show is certainly underrated/

I love this show so much, the dark brooding nature of it. Are there any other shows that have been on like this before or any movies?

Someone will disagree with me, but the small town setting, the eccentric law enforcement guy in a weird city, and the opening of the show reminds me of Twin Peaks.

Rust is like Agent Cooper without the quirk

I watched all 4 episodes back to back last night.

Wow. I feel stupid for not watching this earlier. Fantastic show, McConaughey is a joy to watch and Harrelson plays that lunatic sleezeball to perfection.

Speaking of the title.....its really the only thing I don't like about the show. "True" in the title always makes me think of the shitty True Blood also on HBO.

Well the whole reason they were able to secure the actors in the first place was down to it being a one season gig. I doubt dependent upon the shows success and scheduling that there might not be the opportunity to secure both actors again down the road for a further series if they were inclined, although the talk has been a lot of the shooting being pretty grueling for all concerned given the time frame coupled with the sheer amount of footage shot.

I suspect given the shows success (both critically and commercially) there are likely more than a few lower ranked Hollywood actors (or actresses for that matter) who would be interested in stepping in to take up a role for a second season.

I think in general Television is attracting talent that it normally didn't. Shows like Justified, Boardwalk Empire, Madmen, and others are proving that it is a dynamic medium and has quite a few benefits that aren't found in filmmaking. I wouldn't be surprised if we see more Film Actors move towards television in general from here on out.

I can't find it now, but there was some Imgur gallery/collection that pointed out details/coincidences in the show so far. One of them is the prevalence of a single female surrounded by five males.

This picture, Marty's kid's recreation of a sex act (or car crash, whichever), and the five black men hanging on the porch with the one woman who knew the victim.

Probably nothing, but I did think it was a little interesting.

For sure. I think increasingly cinema is very much getting drawn in terms of the middle ground where in it's hard to succeed in that space between art house hit and action blockbuster unless you're ploughing particular ground (Rom coms for instance). TV especially when it comes to the cable channels does seem to offer greater opportunity for high quality drama and the anthology approach of a series like True Detective which isn't tying people down to multiple seasons seems like a good approach going forward.
