Place your bets: 'Wonder Woman' Box Office performance

Domestically, it probably won't matter. Overseas though, Pirates is probably going to suck all the air out of the room until Transformers.

Not much you can really do about that if that's the case. You gotta release a movie at some point. It's the summer so you're going to meet some resistance with big movies releasing.

I have linked two Female Singers Songs that is partly inspired by WW, even the title include her name.....

Okay. So is that sufficient evidence for being a global icon? Two songs? So if I can find two songs inspired by Adam Sandler he's a global icon? Hell, I'll write two songs myself it that makes Rob Schneider an icon.

Honestly outside of Batman, Superman and Spiderman. Who has any real relevance WW as far as comic characters go?

I do think She's at the top of the next tier though.

People know who WW is of course, but I don't think people have an arc or story that people can tie to her like we do with Spiderman, Batman or Superman.

This movie is a chance to pretty much reintroduce her to a wider audience.

We are talking about her relevance specifically outside the US. You will notice that the Wikipedia page is very barren if you exclude the US.

Ahem.
That page only exists in english. So yeah, not that global. Which is all that we're trying to argue.

Except for the "UN Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls" .... or the United NationS is not global enoght ? =P

Also, you guys forget how prevalent is usa culture in the entire world.... LEGO movie has an invisible jet reference that everyone here in brazil laughed, for example

It literally doesn't matter how well known she is right now.

Here's worldwide Google Trends of Iron Man from 2004 to 2009

Come on, that's the worst example you could have picked considering what happened with that.

Argh, why do I feel the need to enter this debate every time? Lol at myself.

There are more that the two songs but that two were the only that i can find. There was a lot of parodies of her in movies,tv and variety show too and other articles that reference and compare her. I don't think most make it into the digital age.

I give up. I have no way of convincing you unless i managed to find and dig out the old news / magazine articles etc that reference Wonder Woman in comparison to real life person. Digital age come too slow for many :(

FYI woman who performed well in career, marriage or life are often called 女超人 (Super Woman) or 神力女超人/ 神奇女俠 (Wonder Woman).

Oh i forget

We have an over priced DC cafe too but that was recent in 2015.

and a cable car (2014)

And more that i cant remember offhand but these are more recent stuff and not what i am referring to. That she was always well known since the 80s

Saint Titanfall
I mean she's probably the most famous female superhero until the modern superhero craze and even then you could arguably put her above black widow. I mean that says a lot but it sadly is what it is.

I mean despite the fact of what happened that she was picked at all does say something. I mean who else was it going to be if you stick with a female superhero. Captain marvel (literal who? The only thing I knew about marvel growing up was that she got her powers stolen by rogue). Super girl?

Wonder Woman is a comic book icon, her current popularity is irrelevant to this. if 50 years from now Spider Man stop been popular, He will still be a comic book icon.

Marketing would account for its strong opening weekend. That audiences kept going to see it week after week is the most baffling box office story of 2016.

Oh don't worry it's easy: a lot of people liked the movie and didn't care about the hyperbolic critics.

There's nothing baffling about it out there, in the real world.

I'm hoping for $100M OW and $1B overall.

I'm really hoping Wondy is a breakout hit for WB, and they will push her as their female icon rather than Harley going forward.

I also hope this movie is ok to bring my daughter to, which WB should want parents to do.

I am still baffling why DC didnt bank on Harley Queen's popularity and made her own movie first.Better actress, better character and more stories to tell. Harley could work without/with Joker too. Harley & her gang vs Nightwing a night mission or something movie.

I think SS also had some decent legs. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. So marketing is most likely the big reason, but I wouldn't be shocked if WOM helped it along as well.

Yeah it had a big ole 2nd week drop but was pretty steady afterwards

Wanna say had better legs than Civil War, X-Men and BvS

She doesn't, but no other hero does. She's right at the top of the next tier.

Yup.

And honestly, I don't even know why it matters that much. You'd think in our current world where characters people super didn't give a fuck about like Iron Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy have seen huge success, and freaking Superman and Spider-Man have had films perform below expectations, we'd be past using a character's current status as a predicator of a movie's success.

Edit: I see you brought the charts out too. My man.

Fans will kill DC if Harley main an movie before Wonder Woman.

How violent is this movie? My little girl loves WW but I have a feeling this probably isn't for kids lol.

Same.

WB has a goldmine in Wondy if they play it right.

From everything Patty has said and others, it seems like it will be a lot more family/kid-friendly than the other 3 movies.

But also takes place during World War I

Speaking of, let's have a heart-warming pic

My daughter met Wonder Woman, her hero & she believes she can save the world too. Thank you WB

Yeah the WWI bit is what is giving me pause. They should have targeted this for little girls instead of 30 something male comic book fans. Disney accidentally made a girl comic book movie and it was a big hit... Frozen. Doesn't have to be that PG, but actual war violence is probably going to be too much.

It will do fine. Great in the US, decent overseas. 500-600m WW is my bet. If the quality of the film is lacking it will do 400-500 I think, there is some potential competition.

Eh. I'm not sure why a female-led superhero movie ought to be any less violent than the male-led ones.

I'd hate to be right here, but I think everyone is over predicting the international haul potential on this one. I believe it's domestic might outperform overseas due to the other releases coming out around it.

OW: $95M
DOM: $250M
INT: $250-300M
WW: $505-550M

I think it's going to do quite well.

People are being extremely fucking dense about her name recognition being top tier, even if people don't actually tend to like her all that much compared to characters that have been on the big screen longer. No one's debating popularity. Her name recognition is up there. She is THE female superhero. Period.

Oh wow, just looked up the box office total for Suicide Squad. How?!

Because people are stupid. And marketing. Which works really well, especially on stupid people, so Wonder Woman's being non-existent before a few weeks ago was really agitating to witness, especially since people acted like it wasn't a problem.

As for popularity. I think it's more that they can recognize her. But they don't really know much about her character. Hell my mom is seeing this movie because she watched the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman show as a kid.

I am still baffling why DC didnt bank on Harley Queen's popularity and made her own movie first.Better actress, better character and more stories to tell. Harley could work without/with Joker too. Harley & her gang vs Nightwing a night mission or something movie.

Ehh as much as I love Harley I'm happy the Wonder Woman has her movie first. Maybe, they will be willing to make a movie solely on the Trinity.

Why should this be marketed to little girls? Besides this doesn't look to be anymore violent than all the other comic book movies.
