Calvin Klein's Idea of Plus Size Is Pissing People Off (Yahoo)

The average is being pulled up by morbidly obese people as well though, it doesn't mean much. Size 10 being called plus size isn't that weird.

The woman in the pic looks to be healthy.

The problem with 'Plus size' is that everyone knows its a euphemism for fat, and that model is not fat.

Vanity size is crazy. Even kirsty allen claimed to be a size 4. A size four is like a Beyonce sized waist.

Just try the zara/hm/guess. They dont inflate size

but you might get your feelings hurt when you only fit a zara size 6 when you think you're a size 2.

Large breasts, thick thighs, a bit of arm flab, and a broad body suggests that this woman is indeed on the plus size side. There is nothing wrong about this, nor is it suggesting she is fat/obese, just a larger size.

My Latin senses are tingling

this is just another indication that people are having issues correctly labeling body sizes.

i cry every time i put in voluptuous on an search bar and get the wrong results.

I personally don't have a problem with this aside from the branding. If they don't want to manufacture clothing for certain shapes or sizes of people, that's completely normal and understandable. The issue here is with the term "plus sized," as it seems to refer more to the person rather than the fit of their clothing.

What pisses you off?

The fact that she called herself plus-sized in an interview? The fact that, in the modeling industry, she is larger than most of the other models?

The fact that she even thinks she's plus-size. To me, plus size is about being slightly bigger in a weight sense. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what it should be.

To me, she's a tall, normal, and very good-looking woman. There's nothing wrong with being plus size, either (lots of overweight women are still very attractive to me), but the classifications need to change.

Calm down everyone.

But what about this in the full article posted?

A Calvin Klein spokeswoman told the New York Times that the “Perfectly Fit line was created to celebrate and cater to the needs of different women, and these images are intended to communicate that our new line is more inclusive and available in several silhouettes in an extensive range of sizes.”

As Elle points out, featuring plus size models on magazine covers and calendars has typically been a stunt to draw attention and Calvin Klein opting to remain silent on the issue, rather than flaunting it, should indicate that progress is being made and normalizing all sizes in advertising. But at a time when Victoria’s Secret comes under fire for unintentionally saying what the “Perfect Body" and Walmart labels its plus size section for "Fat Girls,” being explicitly clear on intentions is more important than ever.

This is why the arbitrary sizing of women is fucking stupid.
But fuck everyone if they go to the mens pants sizing style because god forbid you are told what your waist and leg length is.

Yep, it's all a conspiracy to paint all Americans as morbidly obese, when in reality the hottest models and porn actors live here.

It still doesn't say anything about plus sized women. I mean, it reads like PR bullshit, but nothing about it says that the model or advertising line is claiming to be plus sized. They don't even mention the model people are angry about in that quote.

I don't understand what this chart is trying to say - can you explain a bit further?

It seems that they do. I mean, the line of clothes she's modeling for is called "perfectly fit". To me that says "healthy", which the model in the photo is definitely a great example of. No, she's not thin. No, she's clearly not athletic. But she's a nice example of what an average healthy person should look like.

Calm down everyone.

But as it happens, Calvin Klein never labeled Ms. Dalbesio a plus-size model or presented her that way in its ads.

what exactly is the purpose of that pose? to make you concentrate on her shoulder and maybe not notice the whole thing looks silly?

I like the invocation of the word "healthy" as a positive descriptor for the model here, implying girls on the thinner side are somehow not healthy or as healthy as her and people like her.

But they're thin tho so fuck em.

Well, considering what she used to resort to in order to get a better physique, sure. Of course we're mostly talking about the standards that models are held to. I don't think you have to take issues people have with current standards in the fashion industry as an indictment of skinny people worldwide.

To Dalbesio, who spent years abusing Adderall, crash dieting, and flirting with bulimia in an attempt to whittle herself to “straight size,”

What should people call her? You can't say average because, frankly, she isn't. You can't say thin because, well, look at other models. You can't say she's overweight because, damn it, she's just not.

There is a range of "healthy" but given the current climate that seems to force women to be UNhealthy in an effort to obtain a body type that for most of them isn't healthy, labeling a woman like this as healthy seems...healthy. It isn't an insult to those who weigh less, and it doesn't mean they aren't healthy also, but I think a figure like this as a target for the average woman is...you know, healthy.

If the average person were healthy then we could just say she is average, but unfortunately the average person is overweight nearing obesity.

Plus-size within the industry. It's not like she's saying something controversial. She's bigger than most models.

I really don't see what the issue is.

I think the only real issue is the conflation of the term "plus-size" between the modeling industry and the clothing industry. This woman is plus-sized by the definition of one, but not the other. Or at least, someone of average height would not be plus-sized if they had her body. At 6 ft. tall or whatever, that changes.

It creates a curved line to direct focus to her stomach and face, makes for various shades of grey on her body, brings attention to her hair which accompanies her back, implies strength and motion (very important!), all of that and her face make her seem confident and purposeful.

That said it's not very good to be honest.

She's not plus-sized and she's not model-sized. She's a model who's normal sized and struggles to get work. Calvin Klein gave her work. Good for Calvin Klein.
